This book was released on 2000 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the use of a well-established carbon budget model for the Canadian forest sector to investigate the carbon budget of Ontario's forest ecosystems. It first reviews the model and its components, then presents results of model runs using input data mainly based on a 1985 forest biomass inventory database. Model simulations begin in 1989 with simulated initial ecosystem conditions that are the endpoint of a 70-year retrospective model run for the period 1920-1989. Results are discussed with regard to forest age structure, forest carbon distribution & stocks, and ecosystem carbon fluxes. The final section includes discussion of the contribution of Ontario forest ecosystems to Canada's carbon budgets and recommendations for further research.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Forest carbon and how it changes over time provides an indicator of the sustainability of forest management. It is also a sign of sequestration or emission of carbon dioxide between forests and the atmosphere that can affect the mitigation of atmospheric greenhouse gas accumulation and global climate change. To address the need for information on Ontario's forest carbon budget, a large-scale forest carbon modelling project was initiated. The background and objectives of this project are described in this report. Three complementary approaches are being used to estimate large-scale forest carbon storage in Ontario's forests: (1) the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBMCFS), (2) a modified version of FORCARB, which is the model developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service to estimate carbon in U.S. forests, and (3) direct estimation of forest biomass carbon using Ontario's growth and yield and forest resources inventory data (CAM, the Carbon Allometry Method)."--Docment.
Book Synopsis Carbon Budget Accounting at the Forest Management Unit Level by : Martin Von Mirbach
Download or read book Carbon Budget Accounting at the Forest Management Unit Level written by Martin Von Mirbach and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has been prepared in response to an identified need to provide guidance to forest managers seeking to report on a carbon budget at the scale of the forest management unit. Key concepts, tasks, and methods related to carbon budgeting are first reviewed, and a few points gleaned from research carried out in Canadian model forests are summarized. Carbon budgeting is then explained with reference to three distinct tasks: obtaining a baseline measurement of the amount of carbon in a particular forest at a given time; measuring the change to that stock over time; and evaluating the likely impact of various management activities on future changes to the carbon budget. Information needed in order to apply these steps is given, with a focus on how to use existing inventories to record carbon stocks & fluxes. The report concludes with a listing of some activities that could help to store carbon in forests.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards the Balance and Management of the Carbon Budget of the Biosphere The current state of misunderstanding of the global C cycle and our failure to resolve an issue that has been debated for 100 years (Jones and Henderson-Sellers, 1990) speaks loudly about the limitations of modem science when faced with the complexity of the biosphere. Efforts to understand and balance the global C budget have gone through several phases. First was a holistic view of the C budget as part of efforts to understand the geochemistry of the Earth (e. g. , Clarke, 1908). Next, came a period of data collection and sythesis which focused on the diversity of sectors of the biosphere. This phase culminated in the early 1970's with the realization that humans were greatly impacting the global C cycle as measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory (Keeling et al. , 1973). New syntheses of the global C budget emerged at this time (Woodwell and Pacan, 1973; Bolin et al. , 1979). The next phase was one of controversy and intense focus on particular sectors of the biosphere. The controversy rested on discrepancies about the role of the terrestrial biota in the global C cycle and the failure to account for sufficient C sinks to absorb all the C emitted by land-use change in the tropics (Woodwell et al. , 1978, 1983; Houghton et al. , 1983).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FORCARB2, an updated version of the U.S. FORest CARBon Budget Model (FORCARB), produces estimates of carbon stocks and stock changes for forest ecosystems and forest products at 5-year intervals. FORCARB2 includes a new methodology for carbon in harvested wood products, updated initial inventory data, a revised algorithm for dead wood, and now includes public forest land, reserved forest land, and forest land of low productivity. The model has been used to provide estimates and projections for policyrelated needs, including the Resources Planning Act timber resource assessment and forest-related greenhouse gas inventories of the United States, and has provided the basis for an analysis of forest carbon for Ontario, Canada.
Book Synopsis Methods for Calculating Forest Ecosystem and Harvested Carbon with Standard Estimates for Forest Types of the United States by :
Download or read book Methods for Calculating Forest Ecosystem and Harvested Carbon with Standard Estimates for Forest Types of the United States written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents techniques for calculating average net annual additions to carbon in forests and in forest products. Forest ecosystem carbon yield tables, representing stand-level merchantable volume and carbon pools as a function of stand age, were developed for 51 forest types within 10 regions of the United States. Separate tables were developed for afforestation and reforestation. Because carbon continues to be sequestered in harvested wood, approaches to calculate carbon sequestered in harvested forest products are included. Although these calculations are simple and inexpensive to use, the uncertainty of results obtained by using representative average values may be high relative to other techniques that use site- or project-specific data. The estimates and methods in this report are consistent with guidelines being updated for the U.S. Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Program and with guidelines developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The CD-ROM included with this publication contains a complete set of tables in spreadsheet format.

Download or read book Carbon Assessment in Boreal Wetlands of Ontario written by Jim W. McLaughlin and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the literature on carbon cycling in northern wetlands, with a focus on peatlands in the context of carbon assessment in boreal peatlands of Ontario. The report first introduces the topic of peatland carbon cycling and the importance of vegetation & hydrologic interactions in its regulation. It also presents components of peatland carbon budgets. The next section lists the uncertainties in global estimates of wetland extent and describes the boreal wetland regions & wetland types in Canada, including peatlands in Ontario. Section three covers the following: peatland net primary production & litter decomposition; peat accumulation & carbon sequestration; carbon storage in Ontario boreal peatlands; carbon cycling dynamics; methane production & emission; the importance of peatlands to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations; measures of carbon dioxide exchange in peatlands; and the relation between climate change and peatland carbon cycling. Section four discusses various approaches used to scale peatland carbon to landscape, regional, & global levels, focussing on carbon dioxide & methane. The final section reviews the Ontario peatland resource and summarizes the knowledge gaps that remain before accurate assessments of peatland carbon budgets are possible.

Ten forest management activities organized in four themes were examined: stand establishment (site preparation, planting, and vegetation management), growth enhancement (thinning, fertilization, and genetic improvement), forest protection (from forest fires, and insect and disease infestations), and harvesting (controlling the area occupied by roads, skid trails and landings, and reducing the area disturbed by harvesting)."--Document.
Book Synopsis Ecological Modelling for Sustainable Development (Penerbit USM) by : Koh Hock Lye
Download or read book Ecological Modelling for Sustainable Development (Penerbit USM) written by Koh Hock Lye and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2013 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the current global scenario, which highlighted the importance of sustainable development and sustaining natural resources, the theme selected for the 2nd Regional ECOMOD 2007 Conference was indeed appropriate. This conference has generated overwhelming interest and I am sure the participants have focussed diligently on the serious issues concerning important environmental issues and steps needed to be taken towards a sustainable development and management of our natural resources and environment. As governments in the Asian region introduce new initiatives and development policies to rejuvenate and protect their environment and natural resources, it is imperative that universities and research institutions play a fundamental role in ensuring that the objectives of these policies are realized. Such institutions can complement government proposals by embarking on research that is relevant and valuable to the needs of respective nations and pursuing extensive research so that the outcome and technology generated can be transferred effectively to the end users. This concerted effort by all the researchers from different fields to improve and manage our natural resources should be lauded. I strongly believe that this conference is an extraordinary testimony to our capacity building at regional and local levels. I believe USM has something interesting to share with all of you in this area. Finally, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, I hope readers will find this book of proceedings useful, informative and stimulating.
