Book excerpt: Alcohol is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Australia, with an estimated 3,290 deaths in 1997 and 72,302 hospitalisations in 1996-97 attributable to high-risk drinking according to the National Alcohol Indicators bulletin number 1 (Chikritzhs, Jonas et al. 1999). An objective of the Plan for Action 2001 to 2003-04 of the National Alcohol Strategy is to reduce injuries and fatalities in the aquatic environment (Department of Health and Aged Care 2001). This report was prepared in response to an invitation to examine the role of alcohol in drowning and other types of injury associated with recreational aquatic activities. The purpose of this report is to collate available information, including new sources, to support priority setting and policy formulation. The report specifically aimed to provide: A statistical description of the burden of alcohol-related drowning and near-drowning in Australia based on an attributable fractions method and published estimated fractions; Analysis of National Coroners Information System (NCIS) data on the involvement of alcohol in drowning deaths and deaths associated with recreational boating (whether by drowning or not); An assessment of the potential value and feasibility of collecting data on alcohol-relatedness as part of emergency department surveillance of drowning and near-drowning cases; A review of literature concerning alcohol as a risk factor for drowning, near- drowning and other serious injury sustained during swimming and other water-related activities, particularly including recreational aquatic activity; and interventions against these risks.

Book excerpt: "Far too many people around the world know the pain of losing a loved one to drowning. Each year almost 360 000 people die from drowning--over 90% of them in low- and middle income countries. More than half of these deaths are among those younger than 25, with children aged under 5 facing the greatest risk. Drowning is the third leading cause of death worldwide for those aged from 5 to 14. Despite these tragic facts, drowning prevention gets relatively little attention and few resources. There is far more we can do to prevent drowning. Global commitments made as part of the Sustainable Development Goals, for example, cannot be met as long as this preventable cause of death is left largely unchecked. All of us--policymakers, parents, non-profit organizations, businesses and concerned citizens--can help prevent drowning. Explaining how is the goal of this guide. Building on the World Health Organization's 2014 Global report on drowning, the following pages provide practical, step-by-step guidance on how to implement 10 effective measures to prevent drowning. They range from community-based solutions, such as day care for children and barriers controlling access to water, to effective national policies and legislation around water safety, including setting and enforcing boating, shipping and ferry regulations. Data show that all of these solutions can help save lives. The more we work together to implement the measures outlined in this guide, the more lives can be saved. We urge all concerned to adopt as many of the interventions and strategies as their resources will allow, and to protect those most vulnerable without delay." p. IV.

Book excerpt: An acclaimed photographic guide to these marvelous and enigmatic birds—now in a new, updated edition Penguins are perhaps the most beloved birds. On land, their behavior appears so humorous and expressive that we can be excused for attributing to them moods and foibles similar to our own. Few realize how complex and mysterious their private lives truly are, as most of their existence takes place far from our prying eyes, hidden beneath the ocean waves. Now in a new, updated edition, this stunningly illustrated book provides a unique look at these extraordinary creatures and the cutting-edge science that is helping us to better understand them. Featuring more than 400 breathtaking photos, this is the ultimate guide to all 18 species of penguins, including those with retiring personalities or nocturnal habits that tend to be overlooked and rarely photographed. This revised second edition features updated scientific information and some spectacular new photographs. Penguins is the most ambitious book to date by Tui De Roy, Mark Jones, and Julie Cornthwaite. Their travels, spanning more than two decades, have seen them crisscross the southern hemisphere to virtually everywhere that penguins are found, from the sun-baked lava shores of the Galápagos to some of the remotest subantarctic islands, as well as all around the Antarctic continent, where Emperor penguins breed on the deep-frozen sea. A book that no bird enthusiast or armchair naturalist should do without, Penguins includes discussions of penguin conservation, informative species profiles, fascinating penguin facts, and tips on where to see penguins in the wild. Covers all 18 species of the world’s penguins Features more than 400 stunning photos Explores the latest science on penguins and their conservation Includes informative species profiles and fascinating penguin facts
