Thus the quantifying statement “Most Americans voted Bush” asserts that the set of voters of George W. By describing collections rather than individuals, quanti?ers extend the expressive power of natural languages far beyond that of propositional logic and make them a universal communication medium. Hence language heavily depends on quantifying constructions. These often involve fuzzy concepts like “tall”, and they frequently refer to fuzzy quantities in agreement like “about ten”, “almost all”, “many” etc. In order to exploit this expressive power and make fuzzy quanti?cation available to technical applications, a number of proposals have been made how to model fuzzy quanti?ers in the framework of fuzzy set theory. These approaches usually reduce fuzzy quanti?cation to a comparison of scalar or fuzzy cardinalities [197, 132].

Book excerpt: This volume honours the life and work of Solomon Feferman, one of the most prominent mathematical logicians of the latter half of the 20th century. In the collection of essays presented here, researchers examine Feferman’s work on mathematical as well as specific methodological and philosophical issues that tie into mathematics. Feferman’s work was largely based in mathematical logic (namely model theory, set theory, proof theory and computability theory), but also branched out into methodological and philosophical issues, making it well known beyond the borders of the mathematics community. With regard to methodological issues, Feferman supported concrete projects. On the one hand, these projects calibrate the proof theoretic strength of subsystems of analysis and set theory and provide ways of overcoming the limitations imposed by Gödel’s incompleteness theorems through appropriate conceptual expansions. On the other, they seek to identify novel axiomatic foundations for mathematical practice, truth theories, and category theory. In his philosophical research, Feferman explored questions such as “What is logic?” and proposed particular positions regarding the foundations of mathematics including, for example, his “conceptual structuralism.” The contributing authors of the volume examine all of the above issues. Their papers are accompanied by an autobiography presented by Feferman that reflects on the evolution and intellectual contexts of his work. The contributing authors critically examine Feferman’s work and, in part, actively expand on his concrete mathematical projects. Book excerpt: The evaluation of a logical formula can be viewed as a game played by two opponents, one trying to show that the formula is true and the other trying to prove it is false. This correspondence has been known for a very long time and has inspired numerous research directions. In this book, the author extends this connection between logic and games to the class of automatic structures, where relations are recognized by synchronous finite automata. In model-checking games for automatic structures, two coalitions play against each other with a particular kind of hierarchical imperfect information. The investigation of such games leads to the introduction of a game quantifier on automatic structures, which connects alternating automata with the classical model-theoretic notion of a game quantifier. This study is then extended, determining the memory needed for strategies in infinitary games on the one hand, and characterizing regularity-preserving Lindström quantifiers on the other. Counting quantifiers are investigated in depth: it is shown that all countable omega-automatic structures are in fact finite-word automatic and that the infinity and uncountability set quantifiers are definable in MSO over countable linear orders and over labeled binary trees. This book is based on the PhD thesis of Lukasz Kaiser, which was awarded with the E.W. Beth award for outstanding dissertations in the fields of logic, language, and information in 2009. The work constitutes an innovative study in the area of algorithmic model theory, demonstrating the deep interplay between logic and computability in automatic structures. It displays very high technical and presentational quality and originality, advances significantly the field of algorithmic model theory and raises interesting new questions, thus emerging as a fruitful and inspiring source for future research.

These two themes emerged from philosophy and language in ancient times; they were studied by traditional informal methods until the 20th century. In the last century the tools became highly mathematical, and both modal logic and quantification found numerous applications in Computer Science. At the same time many other kinds of nonclassical logics were investigated and applied to Computer Science. Although there exist several good books in propositional modal logics, this book is the first detailed monograph in nonclassical first-order quantification. It includes results obtained during the past thirty years. The field is very large, so we confine ourselves with only two kinds of logics: modal and superintuitionistic. The main emphasis of Volume 1 is model-theoretic, and it concentrates on descriptions of different sound semantics and completeness problem --- even for these seemingly simple questions we have our hands full. The major part of the presented material has never been published before. Some results are very recent, and for other results we either give new proofs or first proofs in full detail.
