Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Education Reform in Florida, sociologists and historians evaluate Governor Jeb Bush's nation-leading school reform policies since 1999. They examine the startlingly broad range of education policy changes enacted in Florida during Bush's first term, including moves toward privatization with a voucher system, more government control of public education institutions with centralized accountability mechanisms, and a "superboard" for all public education. The contributors arrive at a mixed conclusion regarding Bush's first-term education policies: while he deserves credit for holding students to higher standards, his policies have, unfortunately, pushed for equality in a very narrow way. The contributors remain skeptical about seeing significant and sweeping improvement in how well Florida schools work for all students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now We Will Be Happy is a prize-winning collection of stories about Afro-Puerto Ricans, U.S.-mainland-born Puerto Ricans, and displaced native Puerto Ricans who are living between spaces while attempting to navigate the unique culture that defines Puerto Rican identity. Amina Gautier’s characters deal with the difficulties of bicultural identities in a world that wants them to choose only one. The characters in Now We Will Be Happy are as unpredictable as they are human. A teenage boy leaves home in search of the mother he hasn’t seen since childhood; a granddaughter is sent across the ocean to broker peace between her relatives; a widow seeks to die by hurricane; a married woman takes a bathtub voyage with her lover; a proprietress who is the glue that binds her neighborhood cannot hold on to her own son; a displaced wife develops a strange addiction to candles. Crossing boundaries of comfort, culture, language, race, and tradition in unexpected ways, these characters struggle valiantly and doggedly to reconcile their fantasies of happiness with the realities of their existence.

Download or read book Florida in the 21st Century written by Leon F. Bouvier and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FLORIDA IN THE 21ST CENTURY: THE CHALLENGE OF POPULATION GROWTH, by demographer Leon Bouvier & sociologist Bob Weller, examines the challenges Floridians face in maintaining their quality of life & remaining economically competitive in the face of rapid population growth. The authors' "medium scenario" population projection warns that Florida's population will more than double in the next 60 years, from 13 million in 1990 to 32 million in 2050. This staggering growth is being driven by migration, mainly from other U.S. states but also from abroad, & rising fertility levels. This population growth will have an enormous impact on every major state policy area, including the economy, education, health care, the environment, infrastructure & social harmony, according to the authors. Competition for scarce resources will continue & worsen as the needs of Florida's large elderly population clash with those of the younger population. Will adequate resources be available for educating & providing job skills to an additional 19 million people? How can the state's fragile environment be protected & its quality of life maintained? FLORIDA IN THE 21ST CENTURY: THE CHALLENGE OF POPULATION GROWTH is available from the Center for Immigration Studies, 1815 H Street, N.W., Suite 1010, Washington, D.C. 20006; (202) 466-8185.

This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Waterways: Evolving Paradigms for Hydro-based Urbanisms investigates the environmental, cultural, and economic future of cities on the water in the 21st century. Collected here are urban projects across the globe from 15 cities on 5 continents representing not only the complexities of urban life in the face of environmental concerns, global economic shifts, waste and energy management, and post-industrial legacies but also new thinking and practices that are emerging from a reconsideration of the value of hydro-based urbanism through a recalibration of our settlement patterns. Contexts range from coastal cities to cities associated with river, lake and wetlands ecologies and offer strategies from retrofitting and recovery to imagining new cities on the water. Although each of these urban projects proposes site specific responses that are locally relevant and respond to the city’s distinctive landscapes, they are also linked through their reconceptualization of a land and water dialogue and in the manner in which they tap into the broader spectrum of what portunism that suggests alternative directions and visions for our urban futures. The congress was held in Durban South Africa.
