Book excerpt: Abstract: The work here proposes a framework for resource-allocation in mobile worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) networks with quality of service (QoS) support that aims to balance between service provider's revenue and subscriber's satisfaction. Since a better optimization can be achieved with the exchange of information across protocol layers, a cross-layer design approach is followed to efficiently utilize the scarce radio resources available to Mobile WiMAX networks. In particular, the thesis presents a resource-allocation algorithm at the physical (PHY) layer that supports multiple connections with diverse service classes and QoS requirements. The algorithm prioritizes each connection bases on the QoS requirements (for example the required minimum data rate and maximum latency), queue status, and channel condition of every connection. Resources are then allocated in a way that maximizes the system throughput while meeting the overall transmit-power constraint and QoS guarantees, and ensuring fairness among users. The algorithm is shown to provide a performance that is comparable to the maximum system throughput approach which does not support QoS or fairness.

We develop an auction framework to bid for allocating the resources based on the utilities and traffic demands. We classify the users into two categories Premium User who has a high priority access and Non premium user having low-priority access. In principle larger the bandwidth more resources WiMAX can support for the user traffic. We apply the concept of Incentive compatibility and use bidding mechanism to maximize the revenue and social welfare of the WiMAX networks. We have considered different cases to achieve this. First, Dependency of networks sharing the resources based on the concept of reduction to a maximum matching in weighted graphs. Second, Independency of networks with which it will share its resources. This is done by designing a Maxmin fairness algorithm with two different segments in a decision making process: (a) A time dependent function that considers the time when packets wait in queues; (b) A Buffer utility function to consider buffer size in scheduling to prevent overflow and proportional fairness scheme to gives a fair share to users and maximize the social welfare and revenue. Finally we simulate a seven cell approach in Opnet-WiMAX simulator for VoIP, FTP and HTTP traffic with different QoS requirements and show premium users gets prioritized access.

Achieving high system throughput in these networks is challenging due to interference which limits concurrent transmissions. In this thesis, we study routing and link scheduling inWiMAX mesh networks. We present simple joint routing and link scheduling algorithms that have outperformed most of the existing proposals in our experiments. Our session based routing and links scheduling produced results approximately 90% of a trivial lower bound. We also study the problem of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in WiMAX mesh networks. QoS has become an attractive area of study driven by the increasing demand for multimedia content delivered wirelessly. To accommodate the different applications, the IEEE 802.16 standard defines four classes of service. In this dissertation, we propose a comprehensive scheme consisting of routing, link scheduling, call admission control (CAC) and channel assignment that considers all classes of service. Much of the work in the literature considers each of these problems in isolation. Our routing schemes use a metric that combines interference and traffic load to compute routes for requests while our link scheduling ensures that the QoS requirements of admitted requests are strictly met. Results from our simulation indicate that our routing and link scheduling schemes significantly improve network performance when the network is congested.

Book excerpt: WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. This book presents radio resource management and performance analysis for WiMax by using PRM (Performance Resource Management). Providing a balance between academic and manufacturer contributors, the title offers different standpoints that can satisfy a reader looking for theoretical analysis and advanced algorithms or searching for their concrete application in the early deployment of Wimax. The title also demonstrates the importance of relaying to WiMax based on both research and standardization. Illustrated by many simulation results, this book will increase the reader's knowledge of WiMax and provide an up-to-date outlook of the R&D activities currently undergone in the broadband wireless system area.

Book excerpt: WiMAX Broadband Wireless Access Technology, based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, is at the origin of great promises for many different markets covering fixed wireless Internet Access, Backhauling and Mobile cellular networks. WiMAX technology is designed for the transmission of multimedia services (voice, Internet, email, games and others) at high data rates (of the order of Mb/s per user). It is a very powerful but sometimes complicated technique. The WiMAX System is described in thousands of pages of IEEE 802.16 standard and amendments documents and WiMAX Forum documents. WiMAX: Technology for Broadband Wireless Access provides a global picture of WiMAX and a large number of details that makes access to WiMAX documents much easier. All the aspects of WIMAX are covered. Illustrations and clear explanations for all the main procedures of WiMAX are pedagogically presented in a succession of relatively short chapters Topics covered include WiMAX genesis and framework, WiMAX topologies, protocol layers, MAC layer, MAC frames, WiMAX multiple access, the physical layer, QoS Management, Radio Resource Management, Bandwidth allocation, Network Architecture, Mobility and Security Features a glossary of abbreviations and their definitions, and a wealth of explanatory tables and figures Highlights the most recent changes, including the 802.16e amendment of the standard, needed for Mobile WiMAX Includes technical comparisons of WiMAX vs. 802.11 (WiFi) and cellular 3G technologies This technical introduction to WiMAX, explaining the rather complex standards (IEEE 802.16-2004 and 802.16e) is a must read for engineers, decision-makers and students interested in WiMAX, as well as other researchers and scientists from this evolving field.

Book excerpt: In the field of computer networking and other packet-switched telecommunication networks, the traffic engineering term quality of service (QoS) refers to resource reservation control mechanisms rather than the achieved service quality. Quality of service is the ability to provide different priority to different applications, users or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow. This book presents current research from across the globe in the study of network quality of service, including resource allocation in next generation networks; QoS management by active grid information servers in grid computing; radio resource management architecture for wireless networks; IP-Based QoS architecture for cloud services; analysis of WiMax and WiFi integration and quality of service in wireless local area networks.
