Book Synopsis Quality management in food chains by : Ludwig Theuvsen
Download or read book Quality management in food chains written by Ludwig Theuvsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication comprises material on recent studies on quality management in agri-food chains. Due to several food crisis’s (e.g. BSE, Foot-and-Mouth disease) and growing demands for food quality and safety, quality management systems and quality assurance schemes have been widely adopted in different countries in recent years. Scientific knowledge about the features, the acceptance and the effectiveness and efficiency of these newly introduced quality management initiatives, has remained scarce until now. The material by experts in the field, focuses on the evaluation of quality management systems and quality assurance schemes. The main issues are the costs and benefits of quality management given the influence of the public sector and consumers' expectations about food quality and safety. Not only are benchmarking and harmonisation methods examined with regard to their impact on the effectiveness of quality assurance schemes, but, also the role of trust, cooperation and integration for efficient quality management is discussed. Different economic theories such as microeconomics, organization and marketing theory as well as advanced statistical methods are applied. Concepts are discussed from the various points of view of industrialised, export-oriented and developing countries throughout the book. The information in this book give a comprehensive review of quality management concepts in food chains and highlight future research directions from a global perspective. This book is of interest to all those who concern themselves with the topic, be it in academia or in the professional sector.
Book Synopsis One Welfare in Practice by : Tanya Stephens
Download or read book One Welfare in Practice written by Tanya Stephens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare has long been recognised as central to the role of the veterinary professional, but this is increasingly aligned with the welfare of humans and the broader environment in which we co-exist. This is the first book dedicated to the role of the veterinarian in One Welfare, a concept that recognises the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing, and the environment. The book demonstrates, through a wide range of international case studies, why professional ethics and the use of good evidence is integral to this role. Contributors bring a rich variety of writings, each with their own perception of the role of the veterinarian in improving animal welfare and human wellbeing. One Welfare in Practice: The Role of the Veterinarian emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and solutions: it is essential that veterinary practitioners recognise when other professionals or disciplines need to be consulted to benefit both animals and humans. With its multiple, fascinating approaches to One Welfare, this book will inform and inspire the veterinarian to find areas where collaborative action reaps the greatest rewards. This unique book shows how veterinarians can and are contributing to improving animal and human welfare, offering practical advice as to how the profession can further engage in One Welfare in a range of settings.

Book Synopsis Indicators of milk and beef quality by : J.F. Hocquette
Download or read book Indicators of milk and beef quality written by J.F. Hocquette and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The farming and agri-food sectors are faced with an increasing demand by consumers for high-quality products. The current major questions are thus how to define quality, and how to increase the quality of animal products to satisfy these new requirements. This is the reason why the Cattle Commission of the European Association of Animal Production (EAAP) organised a specific session on this topic at its Annual Meeting which was held in Bled (Slovenia) in September 2004. This session dealt with the manipulation and evaluation of bovine milk and meat composition and quality with various indicators (commercial, physical, biochemical, molecular or other). These indicators are any method, biological trait, or physical property which may be useful to predict a quality trait. Quality includes sensory traits, nutritional properties of products, their ability to be processed and also any consideration about traceability (genetic, geographic or nutritional traceability). Thus, the full spectrum of quality attributes are discussed. Indicators may also be considered as predictors. In this respect, contributors discussed the detection early in life of the ability of animals to produce meat or milk of high quality. Indicators may also be useful for consumers when they buy meat or milk as official or commercial signs of quality. All the review papers and the short communications which were presented in this session will be in this EAAP publication entitled ""Indicators of milk and beef quality"". Additional papers either presented in 2003 in the EAAP Annual Meeting or from invited authors were added to complete the publication."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food Safety is an increasingly important issue. Numerous foodcrises have occurred internationally in recent years (the use ofthe dye Sudan Red I; the presence of acrylamide in various friedand baked foods; mislabelled or unlabelled genetically modifiedfoods; and the outbreak of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease)originating in both primary agricultural production and in the foodmanufacturing industries. Public concern at these and other eventshas led government agencies to implement a variety of legislativeactions covering many aspects of the food chain. This book presents and compares the HACCP and ISO 22000:2005food safety management systems. These systems were introduced toimprove and build upon existing systems in an attempt to addressthe kinds of failures which can lead to food crises. Numerouspractical examples illustrating the application of ISO 22000 to themanufacture of food products of animal origin are presented in thisextensively-referenced volume. After an opening chapter whichintroduces ISO 22000 and compares it with the well-establishedHACCP food safety management system, a summary of internationallegislation relating to safety in foods of animal origin ispresented. The main part of the book is divided into chapters whichare devoted to the principle groups of animal-derived foodproducts: dairy, meat, poultry, eggs and seafood. Chapters are alsoincluded on catering and likely future directions. The book is aimed at food industry managers and consultants;government officials responsible for food safety monitoring;researchers and advanced students interested in food safety.
