Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores solutions to the problems of inconsistency and even exploitation of the term ecotourism through examples, case studies, and a discussion of quality control and certification. The first part of the book (chapters 2-8) moves the reader through the spectrum of quality assurance tools, from what are perceived to be the least rigorous and effective (awards of excellence and codes of conduct) to more formal, credible and effective methods (certification and accreditation), with a brief foray into using indicators to measure and monitor effectiveness. The second part (chapters 9-23) looks at a range of ecotourism stakeholders' perspectives, with an emphasis in one way or another on various industry certification programmes. A concluding chapter explores the challenges and issues for quality in ecotourism. The book has a glossary and a subject index.

Book excerpt: Quality Assurance in Ceramic Industries represents the proceedings of a conference held at the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, June 4-7, 1978, as fifteenth in a continuing series rotated annually among Alfred University, North Carolina State University, Notre Dame University and the University of California, Berkeley. The first four chapters develop the rationale for major efforts toward an integrated quality assurance program in the ceramic plant, to effect economy in manufacture, to reduce process losses and to improve product reliability and overall profitability. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the use of traditional and advanced statistical methods. They are followed by three chapters on quality assurance in raw materials production and procurement. Chapters 9 through 20 treat specific examples of techniques, sys tems and philosophy of quality assurance in glass, whitewares, abrasives, refractories, electroceramics, structural clay pro ducts and special ceramics for nuclear applications, turbines and igniters. The three concluding chapters deal with the broadly applicable subjects of failure analysis, gaging and life time predic tion. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the generous help and encouragement of the Program Committee: Messrs. R. A. Alliegro, Norton Company; D. L. Guile and R. N. McNally, Corning Glass Works; H. W. Larisch, Coors Porcelain Company; R. H. Lester, Ohio Brass Company (now at the Lapp Insulator Division of Interpace Corporation); R. J. Ryder, Brockway Glass Company and E. A. Book excerpt: So how do you introduce a new employee at a high-tech venture-funded Silicon Valley startup? You have the Chief Donut Officer (CDO) send everyone a Donut Email! Here is an example for the new Director of HR: So what does our new Director of HR do? Let's give an example from another large organization. In "Lord of the Rings," Sauron is the Chief Bad Guy, and he controls a vast army of Orcs, Goblins, and Flying Ringwraiths. How do you keep all these employees happy and productive? You have a Director of In-Human Resources who understands both their needs and also the regulatory environment of Middle Earth. What are the issues of harassment and grievances and on-the-job accidents with spears and battle-axes? The CDO brought Donuts and composed Donut emails nearly every Friday for four years. During that time, Data Domain developed a nifty product, hired a bunch of great people, grew to over $100M in annual sales, and went public. Never underestimate what people will do for a really good Donut.

Book excerpt: European higher education institutions are facing in these last years a number of relevant political and social changes that have asked for more transparency, accountability, comparability and legitimacy of degrees. In light of these new challenges, the great majority of universities have responded by implementing quality assurance processes, either through evaluation or through accreditation. This book collects the evaluation and accreditation experiences gathered by higher education institutions in Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Sweden. It provides a synthetic picture of the present state of quality assurance practices in Europe and offers a few lessons for a future European dimension of quality assurance.

Book excerpt: "The RAWS network and RAWS data-use systems are closely reviewed and summarized in this report. RAWS is an active program created by the many land-management agencies that share a common need for accurate and timely weather data from remote locations for vital operational and program decisions specific to wildland and prescribed fires. A RAWS measures basic observable weather parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation as well as "fuel stick" temperature. Data from almost 1,900 stations deployed across the conterminous United States, Alaska, and Hawaii are now routinely used to calculate and forecast daily fire danger indices, components, and adjective ratings. Fire business applications include the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS), fire behavior, and fire use. Findings point to the fact that although the RAWS program works and provides needed weather data in support of fire operations, there are inefficiencies and significant problem areas that require leadership attention at the National level."

Quality assurance has a number of definitions, but in general is the combination of the quality assurance plan with procedures through which the quality control inspector can inspect in the field. The book is arranged in categories so that is can be used in handbook fashion; each section stands independent of the others. The arrangement of the major portion of the book is organized in the same format as we usually find in building construction specification, the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) format.
