Book excerpt: Dimensional and order-of-magnitude estimates are practiced by almost everybody but taught almost nowhere. When physics students engage in their first theoretical research project, they soon learn that exactly solvable problems belong only to textbooks, that numerical models are long and resource consuming, and that 'something else' is needed to quickly gain insight into the system they are going to study. Qualitative methods are this 'something else', but typically, students have never heard of them before. The aim of this book is to teach the craft of qualitative analysis using a set of problems, some with solutions and some without, in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate Quantum Mechanics. Examples include a dimensional analysis solution for the spectrum of a quartic oscillator, simple WKB formulas for the matrix elements of a coordinate in a gravitational well, and a three-line-long estimate for the ionization energy of atoms uniformly valid across the whole periodic table. The pièce de résistance in the collection is a series of dimensional analysis questions in Integrable Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations with no dimensions existing a priori. Solved problems include the relationship between the size and the speed of solitons of the Korteweg-de Vries equation and an expression for the oscillation period of a Nonlinear Schrödinger breather as a function of its width.A new theme that appears in the second edition are the rare and exotic methods in elementary quantum mechanics. The new chapter covers quantum-mechanical supersymmetry, power index method, scale invariance, self-similarity, and circle inversion.

Book excerpt: This slim volume covers the traditional parts of quantum mechanics: semiclassical theories of radiation and scattering, a number of advanced problems: Feynman diagrams and relativistic quantum mechanics and a collection of modern items: superfluidity and high-temperature superconductivity. The book begins with the description of the basic principles of mechanics, electrodynamics and quantum mechanics, which are needed for understanding the subsequent chapters. Qualitative methods (analytical properties and paradoxes in quantum mechanics) are also introduced. This useful textbook also pairs the problems with their solutions.

Book excerpt: Graduate students in both theoretical and experimental physics will find this third edition of Intermediate Quantum Mechanics , refined and updated in 1986, indispensable. The first part of the book deals with the theory of atomic structure, while the second and third parts deal with the relativistic wave equations and introduction to field theory, making Intermediate Quantum Mechanics more complete than any other single-volume work on the subject.

It is not just a theory of specific physical systems, but rather a new framework with universal applicability. This book shows how we can reconstruct the theory from six information-theoretical principles, by rebuilding the quantum rules from the bottom up. Step by step, the reader will learn how to master the counterintuitive aspects of the quantum world, and how to efficiently reconstruct quantum information protocols from first principles. Using intuitive graphical notation to represent equations, and with shorter and more efficient derivations, the theory can be understood and assimilated with exceptional ease. Offering a radically new perspective on the field, the book contains an efficient course of quantum theory and quantum information for undergraduates. It is aimed at researchers, professionals, and students in physics, computer science and philosophy, as well as the curious outsider seeking a deeper understanding of the theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be useful to anyone who wants to understand the use of quantum theory for the description of physical processes. It is a graduate level text, ideal for independent study, and includes numerous figures, exercises, bibliographical references, and even some computer programs. The first chapters introduce formal tools: the mathematics are precise, but not excessively abstract. The physical interpretation too is rigorous. It makes no use of the uncertainty principle of other ill-defined notions. The central part of the book is devoted to Bell's theorem and to the Kochen-Specker theorem. It is here that quantum phenomena depart most radically from classical physics. There has recently been considerable progress on these issues, and the latest developments have been included. The final chapters discuss further topics of current research: spacetime symmetries, quantum thermodynamics and information theory, semiclassical methods, irreversibility, quantum chaos, and especially the measuring process. In particular, it is shown how modern techniques allow the extraction of more information from a physical system than traditional measurement methods. For physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science with an interest in the applications and foundations of quantum theory. The volume is suitable as a supplementary graduate textbook.

Book excerpt: Amongst the numerous texts on the subject, the authors have succeeded in creating a novel approach to the understanding of quantum physics based on four novel features: - deliberate use of qualitative methods and heuristic arguments rather than formal calculations; - permanent reference to contemporary experimental results in many modern fields of physics (nuclear and high energy, neutronics, solid state, lasers, etc.); - careful discussion of conceptual difficulties and terminological problems from the present standpoint; - presentation of modern theoretical viewpoints (such as symmetry principles). An impressive selection of original problems supplement this up-to-date and comprehensive introduction to quantum physics. Quantics - Rudiments will be appreciated by a wide audience, from educated layman to professional scientist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Understand Quantum Mechanics presents an accessible introduction to understanding quantum mechanics in a natural and intuitive way, which was advocated by Erwin Schroedinger and Albert Einstein. A theoretical physicist reveals dozens of easy tricks that avoid long calculations, makes complicated things simple, and bypasses the worthless anguish of famous scientists who died in angst. The author's approach is light-hearted, and the book is written to be read without equations, however all relevant equations still appear with explanations as to what they mean. The book entertainingly rejects quantum disinformation, the MKS unit system (obsolete), pompous non-explanations, pompous people, the hoax of the 'uncertainty principle' (it is just a math relation), and the accumulated junk-DNA that got into the quantum operating system by misreporting it. The order of presentation is new and also unique by warning about traps to be avoided, while separating topics such as quantum probability to let the Schroedinger equation be appreciated in the simplest way on its own terms. This is also the first book on quantum theory that is not based on arbitrary and confusing axioms or foundation principles. The author is so unprincipled he shows where obsolete principles duplicated basic math facts, became redundant, and sometimes were just pawns in academic turf wars. The book has many original topics not found elsewhere, and completely researched references to original historical sources and anecdotes concerting the unrecognized scientists who actually did discover things, did not all get Nobel prizes, and yet had interesting productive lives.
