Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently crime prevention has been considered of little importance in the training of practitioners in related disciplines. In Europe there is a lack of opportunities for basic training and professional development. It can be assumed that the demand for qualified specialists and managers in crime prevention will increase. It was the objective of the Beccaria-Center Professional Training in Crime Prevention to work on closing this gap. With the financial support of the AGIS-programme of the European Commission, the project was implemented by the Council of Crime Prevention of Lower Saxony, Germany with eight European partners. This compilation from the involved countries reflects the current situation of qualification in crime prevention. The contributions show that it is necessary to expand basic training and further professional development opportunities in crime prevention. They clearly demonstrate that the demand for high quality and sustainable crime prevention is higher than ever and there is a clear lack of such training offers in Germany and in Europe more widely.

Now in its third edition, this book argues for a combination of social and situational/environmental crime prevention strategies as more effective alternatives to policing, criminal justice and 'law and order' approaches. Contending that the principles of prevention can be applied to persistent crime problems such as alcohol-related violence and family and domestic violence, the book explores the prevention of other broad societal harms including terrorism, cybercrime and threats to the environment. The book features useful pedagogy such as case studies, discussion questions and extension topics, as well as new chapters on environmental crime and counter-terrorism. Written by a team of experts in the field of criminology, Crime Prevention remains an authoritative introduction to crime prevention in Australia, and is an invaluable resource for criminology students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book guides policing students through the areas of Criminology and crime prevention required for their course and help them apply this knowledge into their work. It uses crime prevention theory alongside current practice and evidence-based policing research that students can apply in their practice. It explores what criminology is, its helpfulness in policing, and examines key topics such as offenders and offending, victims and victimology, and principles and theories of crime prevention. A range of models of policing which can be applied to various crime prevention scenarios are discussed, with details on specific initiatives already in place. The content is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the PEQF (Police Education Qualifications Framework) and module six in the policing curriculum on criminology and crime prevention. Case studies and evidence-based examples are used to provide clear links between theory and practice, while critical thinking and review activities embed understanding and promote critical thinking. As part of the series, care has been taken into this book to make sure that it reflects challenges faced by new students, linking theory to real-life operational practice. Part of the Professional Policing Curriculum in Practice series.

This book is divided into five comprehensive parts: Part I, brand new to this edition, is concerned with theoretical perspectives on crime prevention and community safety. Part II considers general approaches to preventing crime, including a new chapter on the theory and practice of deterrence. Part III focuses on specific crime prevention strategies, including a new chapter on regulation for crime prevention. Part IV focuses on the prevention of specific categories of crime and the fear they generate, including new chapters on organised crime and cybercrime. Part V considers the preventative process: the methods through which presenting problems can be analysed, responses formulated and implemented, and their effectiveness evaluated. Bringing together leading academics and practitioners from the UK, US, Australia and the Netherlands, this volume will be an invaluable reference for researchers and practitioners whose work relates to crime prevention and community safety, as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in crime prevention.

Book excerpt: Crime Prevention: Approaches, Practices, and Evaluations, Tenth Edition, meets the needs of students and instructors for engaging, evidence-based, impartial coverage of interventions that can reduce or prevent deviance. This edition examines the entire gamut of prevention, from physical design to developmental prevention to identifying high-risk individuals to situational initiatives to partnerships and beyond. Strategies include primary prevention measures designed to prevent conditions that foster deviance; secondary prevention measures directed toward persons or conditions with a high potential for deviance; and tertiary prevention measures to deal with persons who have already committed crimes. In this book, Lab offers a thorough and well-rounded discussion of the many sides of the crime prevention debate in clear and accessible language, including the latest research concerning space syntax, physical environment and crime, neighborhood crime prevention programs, community policing, crime in schools, and electronic monitoring and home confinement. This book is essential for undergraduates studying criminal justice, criminology, and sociology, in the US and globally. Online resources include an instructor’s manual, test bank, and lecture slides for faculty, and a wide array of resources for students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in an accessible style, this book provides a historically grounded critique of American policing and offers implementable solutions, providing students a comprehensive understanding of modern policing. Contemporary policing is in crisis, a situation that has led to persistent calls to reform it. Unfortunately, many proposed solutions focus on piecemeal changes that ignore a fundamental problem—policing relies on a largely reactive approach that does not in any systematic or comprehensive way focus on crime prevention. Most of what the police do, such as responding to 911 calls for service and employing directed patrols or hot spots policing, fails to address the causes of crime. Compounding this problem is the absence of any institution or agency charged with prioritizing the prevention of crime and for ensuring that police efforts support this goal. A central distinguishing feature of this book is its comprehensive approach and the emphasis on policing as part of a much broader set of changes that must occur both to improve policing and to improve public safety and justice. This approach includes retaining what works, eliminating what does not, drawing on evidence-based policy from around the world, and creating systemic changes that institutionalize better policing, accountability, and evaluation processes for ensuring that the police are effective. The Reinvention of Policing can be used in courses focused on policing policy and practice, specifically when discussing the nature of policing, how policing may reflect and contribute to inequality and injustice, or how it might improve these social problems.

It includes information on the kinds of methods and tools that can be utilised and are becoming increasingly available.
