Download or read book From Raj to Republic written by Sunil Purushotham and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1946 and 1952, the British Raj, the world's largest colony, was transformed into the Republic of India, the world's largest democracy. Independence, the Constituent Assembly Debates, the founding of the Republic, and India's first universal franchise general election occurred amidst the violence and displacement of the Partition, the uncertain and contested integration of the princely states, and the forceful quelling of internal dissent. This book investigates the ways in which these violent conjunctures constituted a postcolonial regime of sovereignty and shaped the historical development of democracy in India at the foundational moment of decolonization and national independence. From Raj to Republic presents a multifaceted history of sovereignty and democracy in India by linking together the princely state of Hyderabad's attempt to establish itself as an independent sovereign state, the partitioning of Punjab, and the communist-led revolutionary movement in the southern Indian region of Telangana. A national, territorial, republican, and liberal polity in India emerged out of a violent and contested process that forged new power relations and opened up historical trajectories with lasting consequences for modern India.

Book Synopsis The Holocaust of Indian Partition by : Madhav Godbole
Download or read book The Holocaust of Indian Partition written by Madhav Godbole and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The partition of India was a traumatic event. Apart from destroying the unity of India, the two-nation theory created a divided between the Muslims and non-Muslims which has not been easy to bridge. But, more important was its tremendous human cost-loss of about a million people. This holocaust, which Nehru described as a man-made Greek tragedy, is the focus of this book. Based on extensive and in-depth research, it sheds new light on several important issuses. The book surveys the critical eighteen-month period preceding the transfer of power which saw widespread communal hatred and violence. The poison of communalism had seeped so deep that it should have been evident to anyone that transfer of power was not going to be peaceful. But, the British and the leaders of the two would be dominions India and Pakistan failed to see this writing on the wall. The book vividly brings out the holocaust, makes a clinical and thorough inquest, and concludes that, with foresight and planning, its extent and severity could have been reduced substantially.Analysis of such a monumental tragedy inevitable leads to a critical appraisal of the role played by the authors of the tragedy, and the actors who played a part in it-on stage, backstage and in the wings.

Download or read book Jinnah written by Ian Bryant Wells and published by Seagull Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the development of Jinnah ́s relationship with India ́s Muslims from his entry into politics until 1934. It shows that a dominant view of Jinnah - that he was an ambassador of Hindu Muslim unity in the 1920s who became a communalist in the 1940s - is far from the truth. The book argues that the "two Jinnahs" approach over-simplifies the trajectory of a complex and evolving political thinker and strategist. The primary changes in Jinnah ́s politics were the strategies he employed to achieve his goals rather than the goals themselves. Amongst the many aspects of Jinnah ́s political thought and career analysed here are his "elitism" and distance from mass politics, his relations with Gandhi, Motilal and Jawaharlal Nehru, Willingdon, Ramsay MacDonald and Irwin, his attitude to the Rowlatt Act, the Khilafat movement and non-cooperation, and his troubled and complex relations with other nationalist Muslim leaders.

Book Synopsis The breakup of India and Palestine by : Victor Kattan
Download or read book The breakup of India and Palestine written by Victor Kattan and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first study of political and legal thinking about the partitions of India and Palestine in 1947. The chapters in the volume, authored by leading scholars of partition, draw attention to the pathways of peoples, geographic spaces, colonial policies, laws, and institutions that connect them from the vantage point of those most engaged by the process: political actors, party activists, jurists, diplomats, philosophers, and international representatives from the Middle East, South Asia, and beyond. Additionally, the volume investigates some of the underlying causes of partition in both places such as the hardening of religious fault-lines, majoritarian politics, and the failure to construct viable forms of government in deeply divided societies.
