Book Synopsis Hamstring and Quadriceps Injuries in Athletes by : Christopher C. Kaeding
Download or read book Hamstring and Quadriceps Injuries in Athletes written by Christopher C. Kaeding and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injuries to the hamstring and quadriceps muscles can occur in both low- and high-impact sports and as such are among the more common injuries incurred by athletes. Reviewing the relevant physiology, epidemiology, mechanisms, clinical presentation and treatment of these conditions, Hamstring and Quadriceps Injuries in Athletes covers all sports-related injuries of the thigh musculature in one place. Topics covered include mid substance injuries, acute proximal tendon avulsions and harvesting of hamstrings, as well as strains, contusions and ruptures of the quadriceps, including the use of biologic enhancing agents in healing. Chapters on rehabilitation and injury prevention present techniques to maximize recovery and minimize long-term impairment, speeding up return to play. It will be an often-used and reliable guide for sports medicine practitioners, orthopedists, physical therapists, primary care physicians, team physicians and trainers who treat the injured athlete.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Quadriceps Strengthening Exercise on Quadriceps Muscle Biomechanics During Locomotion in Adults with Knee Osteoarthritis by : Joshua M. Leonardis
Download or read book The Effects of Quadriceps Strengthening Exercise on Quadriceps Muscle Biomechanics During Locomotion in Adults with Knee Osteoarthritis written by Joshua M. Leonardis and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease characterized by knee joint deterioration and pain, while also being associated with altered knee joint mechanics and quadriceps strength deficits. Research investigating the effects of quadriceps-strengthening exercise on knee OA has shown improvements in symptoms, function, and strength, but minimal changes to joint mechanics. It is speculated that improved quadriceps muscle biomechanics are the mechanism responsible for this improvement in symptoms, though this concept is untested. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of quadriceps strengthening exercise on quadriceps muscle biomechanics during level walking, stair ascent, and stair descent in adults with knee osteoarthritis. Three-dimensional kinematic, ground reaction force, isokinetic strength, and WOMAC data were collected on 10 adults with uni- or bi-lateral knee OA. During the 12-week period between the testing procedures, 6 adults participated in strengthening exercise, while the other 4 adults went untrained. Quadriceps biomechanics were quantified using kinetic data collected during level walking, stair ascent, and stair descent tasks in combination with a mathematical knee model. A 2x2 repeated measures ANOVA (p
