Book Synopsis Greek Tragedy in 20th-Century Italian Literature by : Caterina Paoli
Download or read book Greek Tragedy in 20th-Century Italian Literature written by Caterina Paoli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the works of Camillo Sbarbaro and Giovanna Bemporad, this book offers the first in-depth analysis of poetic translations of Greek tragedy in 20th-century Italian poetry. The close examination of the linguistic and ideological diversity embedded in these authors' works shows how narratives of Greek tragedy shaped their poetic universe, and how their work influenced the Greek paradigm in return. The reader is presented with a textual analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's translations, as well as a discussion of larger cultural patterns. This volume provides a fresh perspective on the pedagogical commitment of the Italian poets and their roles as translators of classical studies. The web of relationships and historical context in which these authors are placed provide an understanding of their importance for a wider discourse on translation in Italy and Europe in the 1940s. Caterina Paoli's original analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's poetic translations and her emphasis on their relevance for translation studies, women's writing and classical reception, fills a significant gap in current scholarship on the translation of ancient literature in the Italian poetic community.

Book Synopsis The Oriental, the Ancient and the Primitive by : Jack Goody
Download or read book The Oriental, the Ancient and the Primitive written by Jack Goody and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-02-08 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the comparative survey of pre-industrial family formation undertaken in The Development of Family and Marriage in Europe (1983), Professor Goody looks in depth at kinship practice in Asia. His findings cause him to question many traditional assumptions about the "primitive" East, and he suggests that, in contrast to pre-colonial Africa, kinship practice in Asia has much in common with that prevailing in parts of pre-industrial Europe. Goody examines the transmission of productive and other property in relation both to the prevailing political economy and to family and ideological structures, and explores the distribution of mechanisms and strategies of management across cultures. The book concludes that notions of western "uniqueness" are often misplaced, and that much previous work on Asian kinship has been unwittingly distorted by the application of concepts and approaches derived from other, inappropriate, social formations.
Book Synopsis Ancient Greek Literature and Society by : Charles R. Beye
Download or read book Ancient Greek Literature and Society written by Charles R. Beye and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles R. Beye here offers a lively and challenging overview of Greek literature from Homer to Apollonius of Rhodes, providing a coherent social and historical background to the era. Beye stresses the great distance that separates the twentieth century from the age and audience for which ancient Greek literature was intended. He emphasizes those aspects of antiquity which are apt to be most alien to modern-day readers, particularly the oral nature of early poetry and the public and political—and hence manipulative, conformist, and conventional—quality of much of the literature. He also notes the openly imitative practices of early authors and establishes the Homeric epics as the dominant informing feature of subsequent literature.
Book Synopsis History of Classical Philology by : Diego Lanza
Download or read book History of Classical Philology written by Diego Lanza and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An updated history of classical philology had long been a desideratum of scholars of the ancient world. The volume edited by Diego Lanza and Gherardo Ugolini is structured in three parts. In the first one (“Towards a science of antiquity”) the approach of Anglo-Saxon philology (R. Bentley) and the institutionalization of the discipline in the German academic world (C.G. Heyne and F.A. Wolf) are described. In the second part (“The illusion of the archetype. Classical Studies in the Germany of the 19th Century”) the theoretical contributions and main methodological disputes that followed are analysed (K. Lachmann, J.G. Hermann, A. Boeckh, F. Nietzsche and U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff). The last part (“The classical philology of the 20th century”) treats the redefinition of classical studies after the Great War in Germany (W. Jaeger) and in Italy (G. Pasquali). In this context, the contributions of papyrology and of the new images of antiquity that have emerged in the works of writers, narrators, and translators of our time have been considered. This part finishes with the presentation of some of the most influential scholars of the last decades (B. Snell, E.R. Dodds, J.-P. Vernant, B. Gentili, N. Loraux).

Book Synopsis The Ancient Mediterranean Sea in Modern Visual and Performing Arts by : Rosario Rovira Guardiola
Download or read book The Ancient Mediterranean Sea in Modern Visual and Performing Arts written by Rosario Rovira Guardiola and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When thinking about the Mediterranean, Fernand Braudel's haunting words resound like an echo of the sea and its millenary history. From Prehistory until today, the Mediterranean has been setting, witness and protagonist of mythical adventures, of encounters with the Other, of battles and the rise and fall of cultures and empires, of the destinies of humans. Braudel's appeal for a long durée history of the Mediterranean challenged traditional views that often present it as a sea fragmented and divided through periods. This volume proposes a journey into the bright and dark sides of the ancient Mediterranean through the kaleidoscopic gaze of artists who from the Renaissance to the 21st century have been inspired by its myths and history. The view of those who imagined and recreated the past of the sea has largely contributed to the shaping of modern cultures which are inexorably rooted and embedded in Mediterranean traditions. The contributions look at modern visual reinterpretations of ancient myths, fiction and history and pay particular attention to the theme of sea travel and travellers, which since Homer's Odyssey has become the epitome of the discovery of new worlds, of cultural exchanges and a metaphor of personal developments and metamorphoses.
Book Synopsis Citizenship in Antiquity by : Jakub Filonik
Download or read book Citizenship in Antiquity written by Jakub Filonik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizenship in Antiquity brings together scholars working on the multifaceted and changing dimensions of citizenship in the ancient Mediterranean, from the second millennium BCE to the first millennium CE, adopting a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective. The chapters in this volume cover numerous periods and regions – from the Ancient Near East, through the Greek and Hellenistic worlds and pre-Roman North Africa, to the Roman Empire and its continuations, and with excursuses to modernity. The contributors to this book adopt various contemporary theories, demonstrating the manifold meanings and ways of defining the concept and practices of citizenship and belonging in ancient societies and, in turn, of non-citizenship and non-belonging. Whether citizenship was defined by territorial belonging or blood descent, by privileged or exclusive access to resources or participation in communal decision-making, or by a sense of group belonging, such identifications were also open to discursive redefinitions and manipulation. Citizenship and belonging, as well as non-citizenship and non-belonging, had many shades and degrees; citizenship could be bought or faked, or even removed. By casting light on different areas of the Mediterranean over the course of antiquity, the volume seeks to explore this multi-layered notion of citizenship and contribute to an ongoing and relevant discourse. Citizenship in Antiquity offers a wide-ranging, comprehensive collection suitable for students and scholars of citizenship, politics, and society in the ancient Mediterranean world, as well as those working on citizenship throughout history interested in taking a comparative approach.
