Book Synopsis Mary Magdalene from the New Testament to the New Age and Beyond by : Edmondo F. Lupieri

This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international team of twenty scholars under Edmondo F. Lupieri’s direction produced Mary Magdalene from the New Testament to the New Age and Beyond. While the historical figure of the Magdalene may be lost forever, the construction of her literary images and their transformations and adaptations over the centuries are a lively testimony to human creativity and faith. Different pictures of Mary travelled through time and space, from history to legend and mythology, crossed religious boundaries, going beyond the various Christianities, to become a “sign of contradiction” for many. This book describes a special case of biblical reception history, that of the New Testament figure of a woman whose presence at the side of Jesus has been disturbing for some, but proves to be inspiring for others.
Book Synopsis God in Early Christian Thought by : Andrew McGowan
Download or read book God in Early Christian Thought written by Andrew McGowan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-05-31 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the diversity of early Christian thought and practice is now generally assumed, and the experiences and beliefs of Christians beyond the works of great theologians increasingly valued, the question of God is perennial and fundamental. These essays, individually modest in scope, seek to address that largest of questions using particular issues and problems, or single thinkers and distinct texts. They include studies of doctrine and theology as traditionally conceived, but also of understandings of God among the early Christians that emerge from study of liturgy, art, and asceticism, and in relation to the social order and to nature itself.

Download or read book God Visible written by Brian E. Daley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Visible: Patristic Christology Reconsidered considers the early development and reception of what is today the most widely professed Christian conception of Christ. The development of this doctrine admits of wide variations in expression, understanding, and interpretation that are as striking in authors of the first millennium as they are among modern writers. The seven early ecumenical councils and their dogmatic formulations were crucial facilitators in defining the shape of this study. Focusing primarily on the declaration of the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, Brian E. Daley argues that previous assessments that Christ was one Person in two natures - the Divine of the same substance as the Father and the human of the same substance as us - can sometimes be excessively narrow, even distorting our understanding of Christ's person. Daley urges us to look beyond the Chalcedonian formula alone, and to consider what some major Church Fathers - from Irenaeus to John Damascene - say about the person of Christ.
Book Synopsis Tertullian's Tract on the Prayer by : Ernest Evans
Download or read book Tertullian's Tract on the Prayer written by Ernest Evans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, this edition of the De Oratione contains the Latin text with critical notes, and an English translation opposite. These are supplemented by an introduction and commentary. The De Oratione is one of the early works of Tertullian, written in his pre-Montanist days. It contains the earliest known commentary on the Lord's prayer, and includes a long section on private and public prayers, as well as references to certain suggested new practices in the North African Church, on which he comments with characteristic decidedness. All who study the Fathers will welcome another volume from the editor of Tertullian's Adversus Praxean.
