Book excerpt: This book contains the results of an experiment I have done on myself. I have Asperger’s syndrome. I also had a condition called Schizoid. During the Schizoid condition which lasted twenty-three years, I wrote an epic poem about my life story: Ember. After completing the poem, I experienced something that most people would find unbelievable, and I got out of the Schizoid condition. And then I remembered why I did this experiment. After establishing the connection between Schizoid and Asperger’s, the analysis I made allowed me to produce scientific theses on many issues. For instance, what dreams mean and the function of dreams in the evolutionary design. And I claim to have solved a mystery that has puzzled the human mind for thousands of years... Solution of this mystery also explains the working mechanism of evolution. To understand the content of this book better, I recommend you reading Ember first.
Book Synopsis Dreams That Matter by : Amira Mittermaier
Download or read book Dreams That Matter written by Amira Mittermaier and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams that Matter explores the social and material life of dreams in contemporary Cairo. Amira Mittermaier guides the reader through landscapes of the imagination that feature Muslim dream interpreters who draw on Freud, reformists who dismiss all forms of divination as superstition, a Sufi devotional group that keeps a diary of dreams related to its shaykh, and ordinary believers who speak of moving encounters with the Prophet Muhammad. In close dialogue with her Egyptian interlocutors, Islamic textual traditions, and Western theorists, Mittermaier teases out the dream’s ethical, political, and religious implications. Her book is a provocative examination of how present-day Muslims encounter and engage the Divine that offers a different perspective on the Islamic Revival. Dreams That Matter opens up new spaces for an anthropology of the imagination, inviting us to rethink both the imagined and the real.

Book Synopsis Dream, Death, and the Self by : J. J. Valberg
Download or read book Dream, Death, and the Self written by J. J. Valberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Might this be a dream?" In this book, distinguished philosopher J. J. Valberg approaches the familiar question about dream and reality by seeking to identify its subject matter: what is it that would be the dream if "this" were a dream? It turns out to be a subject matter that contains the whole of the world, space, and time but which, like consciousness for Sartre, is nothing "in itself." This subject matter, the "personal horizon," lies at the heart of the main topics--the first person, the self, and the self in time--explored at length in the book. The personal horizon is, Valberg contends, the subject matter whose center each of us occupies, and which for each of us ceases with death. This ceasing to be presents itself solipsistically not just as the end of everything "for me" but as the end of everything absolutely. Yet since it is the same for everyone, this cannot be. Death thus confronts us with an impossible fact: something that cannot be but will be. The puzzle about death is one of several extraphilosophical puzzles about the self that Valberg discusses, puzzles that can trouble everyday consciousness without any contribution from philosophy. Nor can philosophy resolve the puzzles. Its task is to get to the bottom of them, and in this respect to understand ourselves--a task philosophy has always set itself.
Book Synopsis Hollywood Puzzle Films by : Warren Buckland

Book excerpt: From Inception to The Lake House, moviegoers are increasingly flocking to narratologically complex puzzle films. These puzzle movies borrow techniques—like fragmented spatio-temporal reality, time loops, unstable characters with split identities or unreliable narrators—more commonly attributed to art cinema and independent films. The essays in Hollywood Puzzle Films examine the appropriation of puzzle film techniques by contemporary Hollywood dramas and blockbusters through questions of narrative, time, and altered realities. Analyzing movies like Source Code, The Butterfly Effect, Donnie Darko, Déjà Vu, and adaptations of Philip K. Dick, contributors explore the implications of Hollywood's new movie mind games.

Book Synopsis The Quest of the Silver Fleece by : W. E. B. Du Bois
Download or read book The Quest of the Silver Fleece written by W. E. B. Du Bois and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two young people are given a life-changing opportunity they encounter moral and systemic challenges that are directly tied to their racial and economic backgrounds. In The Quest of the Silver Fleece, W.E.B. Du Bois confronts covert discrimination in contemporary America. Cotton, also known as “silver fleece,” is still a prized possession in the early-twentieth century. It continues to generate massive profits that are barely distributed amongst its predominantly Black workforce. Zora is a child of the South, and Bles, is a man with Northern sensibilities—yet, they both feel the weight of oppression. Set in Alabama and Washington D.C., The Quest of the Silver Fleece examines the struggle for upward mobility and the compromises to sustain it. As a sociologist, Du Bois explores the ongoing effects of racial inequality in both the North and South. With The Quest of the Silver Fleece, he highlights the glaring disparity between the white establishment and African American labor. It’s an explicit indictment of continued oppression in a post-slavery society. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Quest of the Silver Fleece is both modern and readable.

This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life has a way of taking us on many different twists and turns. Some of those are wanted while others are undesirable and unexpected. Positioning yourself to ask God “Why?” is quite reasonable when you can’t seem to understand why God would allow a route in your life that you had no plans for. However, if you take the time to really analyze your life, you can see how, like a puzzle, every situation and circumstance, be it good or not so good, seem to somehow fit together. Romans 8:28 reminds us of the following: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called. according to his purpose.” If you have God as the beginner and finisher of your faith, as mentioned in Hebrews 12:2, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God,” you have an understanding that God is the ultimate potter. Sometimes we fall into the category of feeling like we can write our life plan and expect God to follow suit. During those times, Jeremiah 29:11 should serve as a reassurance that God is not only in control but has a specific plan for us: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” InLadies, It’s Just a Piece of the Puzzle, I take you on my journey of life, lessons, laughter, tears, hope, and wisdom that I have gained. My life’s puzzle pieces are miraculously fitting together toward molding and shaping me to be the woman I am today—as yours are shaping you as well.
