Book excerpt: The twin concepts of "Culture" and "Identity" are inescapable in any discussion of European Integration and yet over the last ten years their meaning has become increasingly contested. By combining an anthropological and political perspective, the authors challenge the traditional boundaries within the issue of the construction of Europe. In the first part, historians and anthropologists from various national traditions discuss the process of the construction of Europe and its implications for cultural identities. The second section examines a number of topics at the core of the process of Europeanization and presents up-to-date information on each of these issues: political parties, regions, football, cities, the Euro, ethnicity, heritage and European cinema. Emphasis is be placed on the political structuring of cultural identities by contrasting top-down and bottom-up processes that define the tensions between the unity and diversity of the European Community.

Download or read book The Flyer written by Martin Francis and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-05-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1939 and 1945, the British public was spellbound by the martial endeavours and dashing style of the young men of the RAF, especially those with silvery fabric wings sewn above the breast pocket of their glamorous slate-blue uniform. Martin Francis provides the first scholarly study of the place of 'the flyer' in British culture during the Second World War. Examining the lives of RAF personnel, and their popular representation in literary and cinematic texts, he illuminates broader issues of gender, social class, national and racial identities, emotional life, and the creation of a national myth in twentieth-century Britain. In particular, Francis argues that the flyer's relationship to fear, aggression, loss of his comrades, bodily dismemberment, and psychological breakdown reveals broader ambiguities surrounding the dominant understandings of masculinity in the middle decades of the century. Despite his star appeal, cultural representations of the flyer encompassed both the gentle, chivalrous warrior and the uncompromising agent of destruction. Paying particular attention to the romantic universe of wartime aircrew, Francis reveals the extraordinary contrasts of their daily lives: dicing with death in the sky one moment, before sitting down to lunch with wives and children in the next. Male and female experiences during the war were not polarized and antithetical, but were complementary and interrelated, a conclusion which has implications for the history of gender in modern Britain that reach well beyond either the specialized military culture of the wartime RAF or the chronological parameters of the Second World War.

Download or read book Mathematics in the K-8 Classroom and Library written by Sueanne McKinney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experts on education offer a rich and diverse selection of children's literature and teaching strategies for the K-8 mathematics classroom. Taking advantage of quality, motivating literature during mathematics instruction pays off, especially when teachers and media specialists work together to convey crucial mathematical concepts and standards. Mathematics in the K-8 Classroom and Library shows you how it's done. After an introduction to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics's (NCTM) Principles and Process Standards, each remaining chapter is devoted to an NCTM content standard. The book offers engaging, research-based strategies and booklists of specific titles that, together, can be used to increase student achievement. The strategies suggested here provide a hands-on, student-centered focus that allows students to make connections with prior learning, personal experiences, and good books. Both the recommended children's books and the activities will appeal even to reluctant readers and students for whom mathematics might be a challenge. Each chapter includes an extensive, annotated list of texts, dozens of hands-on activities, handouts, and writing prompts.

Download or read book Watermelon Nights written by Greg Sarris and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Watermelon Nights, Greg Sarris tells a powerful tale about the love and forgiveness that keep a modern Native American family together in Santa Rosa, California. Told from the points of view of a twenty-year-old Pomo man named Johnny Severe, his grandmother Elba, and his mother, Iris, this intergenerational saga uncovers the secrets—and traumatic events—that inform each of these characters’ extraordinary powers of perception. First published in 1998, Watermelon Nights remains one of the few works of fiction to illuminate the experiences of urban Native Americans and is the only one to depict the historical conditions that shape a tribe’s rural-to-urban migration. As the novel opens, Johnny is trying to organize the remaining members of his displaced California tribe. At the same time, he is struggling with his own sexuality and thinking about leaving his grandmother’s home for the big city. As the novel shifts perspective, tracing the controversial history of the Pomo people, we learn how the tragic events of Elba’s childhood, as well as Iris’s attempts to separate herself from her cultural roots, make Johnny’s dilemma all the more difficult. In the end, what binds both family and tribe together is a respect—albeit at times reluctant—for the traditions that have withstood so many challenges. This new edition of the novel features a revised preface by the author and an afterword by Reginald Dyck, who identifies broader contexts important to our understanding of the novel, including tribal sovereignty, federal Indian policy, and the effects of historical trauma. Gritty yet rich in emotion, Watermelon Nights stands beside the works of Louise Erdrich, Stephen Graham Jones, and Tommy Orange.
