Book Synopsis Inflation and Wage Behaviour in Europe by : Paul de Grauwe
Download or read book Inflation and Wage Behaviour in Europe written by Paul de Grauwe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maastricht Treaty makes the convergence of inflation rates one of the preconditions of European Monetary Union (EMU). The purpose of this study is to shed light on the mechanism underlying the processes that lead to convergence or divergence in national inflation rates. It examinesinflation and wage bahaviour in the European Monetary System (EMS), their determinants, and their implications for the credibility and sustainability of the system's exchange rate mechanism (ERM). Although the focus is on the EMS period, eleven of the twelve studies also review the background of the1970s. The contributors examine issues of monetary control, stability of national and ERM-wide money-demand function, the monetary policy of Germany - the pivotal country in the EMS - and its influence on the stability of the system after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As well as explaining how theEMS worked, the book also offers reasons for its breakdown in 1992-3 under the blow of exogenous shocks and growing policy conflict between member countries. The study identifies several causes of inflation and persistent inflation differentials in the EMS. Among the 'real' causes, particular attention is devoted to sectoral productivity shocks. In some countries, import price shocks, exogenous wage pushes, taxes, and government expenditure are bound tobe important factors. Since theses kinds of shock hit the various economies of the region differently, inflation differntials can persist for several years. The different policies of governments and central banks, and the fact the monetary policies have not always been consistent with the long-runmaintenance of fixed exchange rates, have also played a considerable role in explaining the persistance of inflation differentials.

Book Synopsis Neo-liberal Economic Policy by : Philip Arestis
Download or read book Neo-liberal Economic Policy written by Philip Arestis and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . this is a very good book. It is carefully argued and well presented, incorporating a wealth of information. Andrew Mearman, Economic Issues Over the past two decades there has been a prevailing shift in economic policy in many countries. This reflects the continuing rise of neo-liberalism the doctrine that economic policy should leave it to the market and that governments should retreat from market intervention. This book provides a balanced and comprehensive appraisal of these important policy developments. The authors examine the most notable trends in neo-liberal economic policy such as the withdrawal from the use of fiscal measures and the reliance on monetary policy. They discuss the neo-liberal view that the causes of unemployment lie in the operation of the labour market, in particular its inflexibility. They also assess the increasing inclination towards the liberalisation and deregulation of markets, most notably financial markets. In light of these developments, the authors investigate several specific areas including: an assessment of the theory of credibility financial fragility and the development process a reappraisal of the Rehn Meidner Model for Sweden the economic policy of the Spanish socialist governments the costs of neomonetarism in Brazil macroeconomic policies of the EMU. The contributors expertly illustrate the ways in which neo-liberal policies have been applied and implemented. They also seek to show the shortcomings of the neo-liberal approach and illustrate the different policy models available. As such, this volume will interest and inform academics, economists and policymakers looking for a detailed critique of recent developments in economic policy.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of European Integration by : Finn Laursen
Download or read book The Political Economy of European Integration written by Finn Laursen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of European integration produced much scholarly debate in the 1950s and '60s. The following two decades saw few works on European integration that included more elaborate discussions of theory and methodology; most studies in that period were fairly descriptive. In recent years there has been renewed theoretical interest in European integration. This book, however, is one of the first to discuss and apply various political-economy approaches explicitly to integration, including classical integration theory and modern public choice theories. Areas covered include common policies and decision making, as well as the external relations of the EU. The influence of the European Parliament, the concept of subsidiarity, trade policy, Economic and Monetary Union, reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, relations with EFTA and Eastern European countries, as well as enlargement, are all discussed. Audience: Of interest to both scholars and policy makers concerned with these issues.

Book Synopsis Social Democracy in Sweden by : Dimitris Tsarouhas
Download or read book Social Democracy in Sweden written by Dimitris Tsarouhas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the future of social democracy in the age of globalization? The Swedish model, long the paradigm for socially responsible capitalism, was pronounced dead in the 1990s, but a new Swedish model has emerged and is thriving. Europeanisation and globalization were expected to erode social democracy, placing limits on the power of organized labour to negotiate with capital. Here Dimitris Tsarouhas shows why and how this did not happen. Tracing the emergence of the original model to its institutional and political origins, he garners rich empirical evidence to show the resilience of the fundamental nature of Swedish social democracy in the face of changing policies, institutions and labour relations. "Social Democracy in Sweden" is an important reassessment of European social democracy and the impact of globalization.
