Download or read book Growing from Seed written by Celeste Lacuna-Richman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Forestry and its most well-known variant, Community Forestry, have been practiced almost as long as people have used forests. During this time, forests have provided people with countless goods and services, including wood, medicine, food, clean water and recreation. In making use of forest resources, people throughout history have frequently organized themselves and established both formal and informal rules. However, just as the discipline of Forestry had previously limited and concentrated the function of forests to the timber it provides, the popular understanding of Social Forestry has restricted it to a Forestry sub-topic that deals with welfare, without any connection to income-generation, and is practiced only in developing countries. This volume introduces the concepts of Social Forestry to the student, gives examples of its practice around the world and attempts to anticipate developments in its future. It aims to widen the concept of Social Forestry from a sub-practice within Forestry to a practice that will make Forestry relevant in countries where wood production alone is no longer the main reason for keeping land forested, thereby rediscovering and redefining this important topic.

Download or read book Taungya written by Carl F. Jordan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As natural forest disappear in tropical and subtropical countries, governments and forest industries are turning to plantations to meet the demand for timber. Taungya forestry has arisen to ameliorate conflicts between foresters who need land for forest plantations and shifting cultivators who need it to plant subsistence crops. Taungya is a system of forest plantations in which peasants are allowed to cultivate crops for the first few years between the seedlings of a forest plantations. Recent modifications to the taungya system include social and economic benefits to participating families. This book describes the history and current practices of taungya, as it has developed in Southeast Asia since its introduction to Burma in the 1860s, and assesses its strengths and weaknesses. It suggests social, economic and technical modifications that may help make taungya a method for improving the sustainability of forestry in developing countries (in Africa and South America as well as Asia), and will interest those concerned with tropical forestry, agroforestry systems and rural development.

Book excerpt: Forestry science became more empirically oriented by paying attention to all possible forest management conditions rather than to professionally-controlled forest management situations only. These changes in forestry science can best be considered as an evolutionary change rather than a paradigmatic one. However, the differentiation in tasks of professional foresters and the loosening of the close institutional links between forestry scientists and professional practitioners can be considered as involving a paradigmatic change in forestry as professional institution.
