He knew he was dying, yet he continued to work. In those final hours of his life, while fading in and out of consciousness, he was working on what he hoped would be the greatest work of all. It was a project of monumental complexity. It was a project that he hoped would unlock the mind of God.

Book Synopsis Case Studies in Public Governance by : June Gwee
Download or read book Case Studies in Public Governance written by June Gwee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes available original case studies on how institutions developed in Singapore. Up until now, these case studies have been used exclusively in Singapore to teach public governance, and have been well-received in the Singapore Civil Service College’s milestone programmes. With this publication, more will be able to access this material. Students, researchers and policy-makers can now use these case studies for pedagogy or to derive insights on Singapore’s approach on governance. Designed around the theme of "building institutions", the case studies also present facets of how institutions developed which are universal to management studies. These case studies highlight a core aspect in the development of institutions, namely, how people and organisations change the culture of institutions, how leaders influence their organisations, and how policies define the systems that build institutions. The book contains 5 case studies, each profiling a unique sector and key institution in Singapore. They present how public agencies and leaders helped to build Singapore institutions over the last forty years. Although there are more cases studies on management and strategy than public policy and administration, there is growing interest in Asian case studies, and more specifically, case studies on Singapore public governance. This collection of case studies on Singapore institutions provides the perspective from Singaporean case writers themselves, on the role of government in Singapore’s development.

Book Synopsis Singapore’s Park System Master Planning by : Raffaella Sini
Download or read book Singapore’s Park System Master Planning written by Raffaella Sini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of Singapore’s parks system, from colonial to present times. Further, it contextualizes the design and planning of parks in the general discourse on western and eastern traditions: early twentieth century western conceptions ‘imported’ during colonialism; modernism; postmodernism, and the contemporary ecological debate. Park system planning products respond to national policies and result in structural urban elements and a range of park types. Global (western ideology) and local issues have influenced park system planning and the physical design of individual parks over time. However, in Singapore the eastern literature has not addressed the development of parks and urban green spaces in terms of historical perspective. The publication reveals the interrelations between visual representations and changing political ideologies. Singapore’s system of public parks is shown to represent an iconography created by the state. Its set of constructed narratives elucidates on the potential social, cultural and environmental roles of public parks. However, Singapore’s park system presents a novel paradigm for expanding Asian cities, characterized by evolving urban imaging strategies. In framing Singapore’s case study within the broader perspective of eastern applications of western planning and design practices, and constructions of nation in post-colonial countries, the manuscript establishes the contribution of the Singaporean model of design and planning of parks to the international debate.

Book Synopsis Death and Life of Nature in Asian Cities by : Anne Rademacher
Download or read book Death and Life of Nature in Asian Cities written by Anne Rademacher and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and Life of Nature in Asian Cities explores the encounter between two processes that are unfolding in diverse patterns across Asia—the rapid urbanization of Asia across big cities, smaller towns, and the newest urban concentrations; and the contentious debates and novel schemes by which nature is figured and emplaced in cities and their conurbations. Contemporary Asian cities displace nature by causing its death and withering, but also embrace it through acts of renewal and the pursuit of sustainability. Contributors in this volume gather case studies from across Asia to address projects of urban greening and reimagining nature in urban life. The book illustrates how the intersection of urban growth and urban nature is a place rich with fresh ideas about urban planning, governance, and social life. This book illuminates a continuing process of discovery and regeneration through which urban natures may well be moving from taken-for-granted infrastructures to more consciously experienced sites of interplay between non-human life and materials, and daily human life experiences. Debates and efforts to recover nature in the city provoke moral and ethical evaluations of the human ecology of city life, and direct ecologies of urbanism into new avenues like aesthetics, care, perception, and stewardship. “This fascinating collection of essays brings together a series of cutting-edge insights into Asian cities caught in the maelstrom of global environmental change. A particular strength of this book is its commitment to forms of interdisciplinary dialogue and conceptual engagement that unsettle existing geographies of knowledge.” —Matthew Gandy, University of Cambridge; author of Natura Urbana: Ecological Constellations in Urban Space “This impressive collection on urban ecologies moves beyond the anthropocentric city to expand our understanding of cities as multispecies spaces of active collaboration, decay, and regeneration, offering new possibilities for the flourishing of urban life—both human and non-human—and the design of more just and sustainable cities for all.” —Christina Schwenkel, University of California, Riverside; author of Building Socialism: The Afterlife of East German Architecture in Urban Vietnam
Book Synopsis German Environmental Law for Practitioners by : Horst Schlemminger
Download or read book German Environmental Law for Practitioners written by Horst Schlemminger and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Law for Practitioners is an invaluable, practice-related introduction to environmental law in Germany, written by specialist legal advisers with extensive experience in the practical application of environmental law. This wholly revised second edition takes account of recent developments in rapidly changing environmental legislation and case-law. It is essential reading for foreign investors as well as providing swift, ready access to legal provisions and terms in both German and English. The book comprises an English description of environmental law in Germany and a bilingual compilation of the most important environmental statute texts. After a brief introduction to German environmental law and a short discussion of the legal bases and principles, fundamental aspects of significant interest to foreign investors are examined. The regulation of environmentally relevant activities is explained in a clear, concise way. Responsibility for residual pollution is discussed in detail. The book also provides a clear overview of both environmental private law and environmental criminal law, focussing on new developments relevant to investors and outlining recent trends in environmental litigation. In addition, environmental levies and their practical application as a formative instrument of environmental policy are described. The relationship between environmental law and contract is also explored. Finally, the authors look at environmental management systems and access to environmental information. The bilingual statute texts make vital legislation on the pollution and protection of the environment available to advisers and investors alike.

Book Synopsis Nature-Based Solutions for Building Resilience in Towns and Cities by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Nature-Based Solutions for Building Resilience in Towns and Cities written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban populations are projected to increase from 54% to 66% of the global population by 2050, with close to 90% of the increase concentrated in Asia and Africa. Cities and towns---a growing source of greenhouse gas emissions---will need to address challenges posed by climate change. A nature-based approach in identifying climate change vulnerabilities and developing relevant adaptation options was conducted in three towns of the Greater Mekong Subregion. Working with local governments, nongovernment organizations, women's groups, and professional associations, town-wide adaptation measures were defined by overlaying climate change projections on town plans and zoning schemes for strategic infrastructure. This publication captures valuable experience and lessons from the project.
