Download or read book Cinematic Appeals written by Ariel Rogers and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinematic Appeals follows the effect of technological innovation on the cinema experience, specifically the introduction of widescreen and stereoscopic 3D systems in the 1950s, the rise of digital cinema in the 1990s, and the transition to digital 3D since 2005. Widescreen films drew the spectator into the world of the screen, enabling larger-than-life close-ups of already larger-than-life actors. The technology fostered the illusion of physically entering a film, enhancing the semblance of realism. Alternatively, the digital era was less concerned with manipulating the viewer’s physical response and more with generating information flow, awe, disorientation, and the disintegration of spatial boundaries. This study ultimately shows how cinematic technology and the human experience shape and respond to each other over time. Films discussed include Elia Kazan’s East of Eden (1955), Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999), The Matrix (1999), and Thomas Vinterberg’s Dogme film The Celebration (1998).
Download or read book Cinephilia written by Marijke de Valck and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They obsess over the nuances of a Douglas Sirk or Ingmar Bergman film; they revel in books such as François Truffaut's Hitchcock; they happily subscribe to the Sundance Channel—they are the rare breed known as cinephiles. Though much has been made of the classic era of cinephilia from the 1950s to the 1970s, Cinephilia documents the latest generation of cinephiles and their use of new technologies. With the advent of home theaters, digital recording devices, online film communities, cinephiles today pursue their dedication to film outside of institutional settings. A radical new history of film culture, Cinephilia breaks new ground for students and scholars alike.
Download or read book Lars von Trier written by Linda Badley and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scandinavia's foremost living auteur and the catalyst of the Dogme95 movement, Lars von Trier is arguably world cinema's most confrontational and polarizing figure. Willfully devastating audiences, he takes risks few filmmakers would conceive, mounting projects that somehow transcend the grand follies they narrowly miss becoming. Challenging conventional limitations and imposing his own rules, he restlessly reinvents the film language. The Danish director has therefore cultivated an insistently transnational cinema, taking inspiration from sources that range from the European avant-garde to American genre films. This volume provides a stimulating overview of Trier's career while focusing on the more recent work, including his controversial Gold Heart Trilogy (Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, and Dancer in the Dark), the as-yet unfinished USA Trilogy (Dogville and Manderlay), and individual projects such as the comedy The Boss of It All and the incendiary horror psychodrama Antichrist. Closely analyzing the films and their contexts, Linda Badley draws on a range of cultural references and critical approaches, including genre, gender, and cultural studies, performance theory, and trauma culture. Two revealing interviews that Trier granted during crucial stages of Antichrist's development are also included.

Book Synopsis Danish Mothers On-Screen by : Djuna Hallsworth
Download or read book Danish Mothers On-Screen written by Djuna Hallsworth and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines content analysis of film and television cases, the examination of policy documents, and first-hand interview material with Danish industry professionals, tracing the pivotal moments in media and welfare state history to unite these two overlapping spheres: welfare state social policy and media imagery. In doing so, it addresses a gap in existing academic and policy documents to demonstrate how motherhood and femininity are presented in contemporary state-supported Danish screen fiction. As an industry premised on state funding and public service values, Danish screen fiction plays a cogent role in shaping and communicating cultural norms and provides a space for the cultivation of belonging and a sense of a shared identity. For this reason, it is vital to identify and examine representational trends and patterns in popular media formats. This book argues that the political narrative of gender equality, democracy and universal social support that permeates Danish state policy is undermined in screen fiction, wherein working mother characters are problematised and the welfare system’s integrity is challenged. This book asserts that the framing of femininity, motherhood and citizenship in many contemporary Danish films and television dramas indicates a cultural concern about the welfare state’s institutionalisation of caregiving and presents absent mothers as an indirect cause of crime, trauma or social unrest.

As an alternative to a formal approach in architectural design, this book challenges readers to rethink the reverie of materials in architecture through an examination of historical precedent, architectural practice, literary sources, philosophical analyses and everyday experience. Focusing on matter as the premise of an architect’s imagination, each chapter identifies and graphically illustrates how material imagination defines the conceptual premises for making architecture.

Book Synopsis Lone Scherfig's Italian for Beginners by : Mette Hjort
Download or read book Lone Scherfig's Italian for Beginners written by Mette Hjort and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lone Scherfig was the first of a number of women directors to take up the challenge of Dogme, the back-to-basics, manifesto-based, rule-governed, and now globalized film initiative introduced by Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg in 1995. Entitled Italiensk for begyndere (Italian for Beginners), Scherfig's Dogme film transformed this already accomplished filmmaker into one of Europe's most noteworthy women directors. Danish and international critics lavished praise on Scherfig and her film, and their reactions harmonized with those of festival juries. Battered by life, but by no means defeated or destroyed, the characters in Italian for Beginners are all in touch at some deep intuitive level with the truth that is the film's basic message: that happiness and a sense of self-worth are sustained by love--whether romantic love or that of a community of like-minded people. The film struck an important chord with viewers precisely because it took Dogme in a new direction, one that reflects Scherfig's sensibilities and preferences as a woman. The book includes the Dogme manifesto and draws on interviews with the filmmaker as well as with the cast and crew. Watch the book trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk7SGfrIHGA

Book Synopsis The Price of Neglect and Other Essays by : A. W. Tozer
Download or read book The Price of Neglect and Other Essays written by A. W. Tozer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. A. W. Tozer, without question, had an 'anointing' for this generation. As an articulate preacher and perspicuous writer, he assumed the role of a reverent forecaster. His so accurate description of unseemly religious and moral conditions and where they were leading the church are black facts that make one wonder about the 'religion' of the evangelical church of our day." — Dr. L. L. King, from the foreword The Price of Neglect, a collection of editorials written while Dr. Tozer was the editor of Alliance Life, contains one of Tozer’s most consistent messages: Do not neglect the spiritual life, for you cannot afford to. Tozer warns against rising secularism, which is characterized by a muting or outright compromise of biblical truths, carnal worship, and lifestyles practically identical with that of the world. With a prophetic voice in articulate writing, he pens chapters like: The Price of Neglect Lyric Theology Personal Holiness Is a First Prayer Changes People—And Things The Value of a Good Home On Omitting the Third Stanza Heed Tozer’s warning in The Price of Neglect, and give your spiritual life the attention it demands.

Book Synopsis Politics, Theory, and Film by : Bonnie Honig
Download or read book Politics, Theory, and Film written by Bonnie Honig and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lars von Trier's intense, disturbing, and sometimes funny films have led many to condemn him as misogynist or misanthropic. The same films inspire this collection's reflections on how our fears and desires regarding gender, power, race, finitude, family, and fate often thwart -- and sometimes feed -- our best democratic aspirations. The essays in this volume attend to von Trier's role as provocateur, as well as to his films' techniques, topics, and storytelling. Where others accuse von Trier of being clichéd, the editors argue that he intensifies the "clichés of our times" in ways that direct our political energies towards apprehending and repairing a shattered world. The book is certainly for von Trier lovers and haters but, at the same time, political, critical, and feminist theorists entirely unfamiliar with von Trier's films will find this volume's essays of interest. Most of the contributors tarry with von Trier to develop new readings of major thinkers and writers, including Agamben, Bataille, Beauvoir, Benjamin, Deleuze, Euripides, Freud, Kierkegaard, Ranciére, Nietzsche, Winnicott, and many more. Von Trier is both central and irrelevant to much of this work. Writing from the fields of classics, literature, gender studies, philosophy, film and political theory, the authors stage an interdisciplinary intervention in film studies.
Download or read book Provoked written by Franklin Trainer and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has been my privilege to know Franklin Trainer for several years. He is a man of Christian character and has proven himself faithful. He takes his responsibilities very seriously while attempting his very best to live holy and being led by the Spirit. I would say that he is old fashion in his beliefs, but he simply just believes the Bible. You will only find him using the King James Bible in his studies and devotionals. My wife has spent time with his wife and their home is solid, stable and full of Christian joy. If you want to read devotionals written by a man that lives them out daily, please read Provoked." Sincerely, Evangelist Matt Pringle Ottumwa Baptist Temple Ottumwa, Iowa "Cut from the old cloth of the patriarchs, Franklin Trainer wastes no time trying to be good. He knows that he is a sinner and must have God's own goodness for his own. Franklin is not concerned with simply being right. Rather, he insists on Christ's righteousness being imputed to him. This is a man who has been to Bethel, and who has walked with God and every aspect of his life is fragrant with the aroma of celestial delights. Now he has erected an altar, and welcomes us all to worship with him at the feet of the One he adores. Having wrestled with God for every benediction within, Franklin generously invites us to enjoy them with him." Pastor Caleb Thompson Austin, Texas Born and raised in rural Missouri, Franklin grew up appreciating the value of candor and honesty. Choosing early on to surround himself with older mentors, his own age and maturity has now served to solidify the benefit of having learned plain speak during his formative years. Reared in a crosspatch of Protestantism, but not saved until the age of 29, has forged a post salvation passion, and a compelling heart, to reach out to others who perhaps live in like delusion that all is well with their soul apart from being "born again" (cf. John 3:3, 5). Working for some 24 years in youth ministry, Franklin takes seriously the admonition "to teach others also" those eternal truths instilled in him by "faithful men" gone on before (cf. 2 Timothy 2:2). Franklin teaches and preaches regularly in chapel and Sunday morning classes as a staffer at his local church and Christian school; as well as on the radio in the nearby community. Married, with two grown daughters, two terrific sons-in-law, and one granddaughter; life in CHRIST is rich and rewarding indeed. The Trainer's make their home in the Ozark region of the 'Show Me' state; enjoying country living at its finest, amidst some of the best climate and scenery found anywhere under GOD'S Heaven.
