Book excerpt: For a quarter century, Luis Antonio Navia worked as a high-level cocaine transporter for all of the major Colombian and Mexican drug cartels, including Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel, and flooded the United States and Europe with cocaine before his dramatic arrest in Venezuela in 2000 during the 12-nation Operation Journey. The story of Navia’s rise, fall, takedown, imprisonment, and redemption is expertly researched and told by acclaimed biographer Jesse Fink, who has gathered interviews with Navia, Navia’s family, and a dozen law-enforcement agents in the United States and Great Britain from agencies such as the DEA, ICE and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise (now Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs). Told in vivid detail, this true crime story will captivate the reader from start to finish.

Book Synopsis Power or Pure Economics? by : Yasuma Takata
Download or read book Power or Pure Economics? written by Yasuma Takata and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-28 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines central questions about the nature of economic theory, its historical development and its explanatory power. What determines economic distribution - can pure economic theory itself explain the fundamentals of distribution or is a broader economics incorporating theories of power in society necessary? The book presents the debate through classic statements of each position from two leading economists of the century, Joseph A. Schumpeter and Yasuma Takata. A substantive introduction from Michio Morishima assesses and places in context the work of both Schumpeter and Takata.
Download or read book Pure Healing written by Aja James and published by Aja James. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** 2018 Reader's Favorite Finalist *** Enter the world of Pure Ones, a race of immortal, supernaturally powerful beings who protect humankind, where sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s Eternal Mate leads to a slow, painful death within thirty days. The Healer of the race, Rain, is the only exception to this rule. To harness and accumulate enough energy to heal severe wounds, especially as the war between her people and the vampire hordes accelerates, she must take a Consort once every ten years and draw strength from his blood and body. But as the war wears on, few Pure-males who are strong enough to serve as her Consort remain. Valerius, Protector of the race, is the strongest candidate. Despite their instant attraction ten years ago when they first met, Valerius has staunchly avoided applying to be the Healer’s Consort. The brutality and violence he suffered as a Roman sex slave in his human life ate away at his soul, leaving a dark abyss of torment and self-doubt. Now, as Rain’s strength drains with every healing act, Valerius cannot escape the fact that he may be the only one who can save her, and in so doing, afford his people greater hope for the future as battles intensify. Will Rain and Valerius find their way to each other as the struggles between good and evil evolve? *** Trigger Warning * Sexual Abuse. ***

Book Synopsis Critique of Pure Music by : James O. Young
Download or read book Critique of Pure Music written by James O. Young and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we value music? Many people report that listening to music is one of life's most rewarding activities. In Critique of Pure Music, James O. Young seeks to explain why this is so. Formalists tell us that music is appreciated as pure, contentless form. On this view, listeners receive pleasure, or a pleasurable 'musical' emotion, when they explore the abstract patterns found in music. Music, formalists believe, does not arouse ordinary emotions such as joy, melancholy or fear, nor can it represent emotion or provide psychological insight. Young holds that formalists are wrong on all counts. Drawing upon the latest psychological research, he argues that music is expressive of emotion by resembling human expressive behaviour. By resembling human expressive behaviour, music is able to arouse ordinary emotions in listeners. This, in turn, makes possible the representation of emotion by music. The representation of emotion in music gives music the capacity to provide psychological insight-into the emotional lives of composers, and the emotional lives of individuals from a variety of times and places. And it is this capacity of music to provide psychological insight which explains a good deal of the value of music, both vocal and purely instrumental. Without it, music could not be experienced as profound. Philosophers, psychologists, musicians, musicologists, and music lovers will all find something of interest in this book.
Book Synopsis Kant's Critique of Pure Reason by : Otfried Höffe
Download or read book Kant's Critique of Pure Reason written by Otfried Höffe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-23 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant’s "Critique of Pure Reason" is so outstanding among modern philosophical works, that it can be termed "the" foundation of modern philosophy. Schopenhauer termed it "the most important book ever to have been written in Europe." Otfried Höffe guides the reader through the "Critique" one step at a time, expounding Kant’s thoughts, submitting them to an interpretation and drawing a summary conclusion, placing the work and its topics within the context of its modern successors. A "critical" interpretation of Kant’s text reveals that he had something to say on many discussions that are said to have originated after his death. Reducing his argumentation to its central tenets, it can be made stronger and applicable to current problems. Kant’s eventual concern, however, even when writing theoretical philosophy, lay with the practical. Elaborating this concern and its connection to Kant’s theoretical philosophy is a prime tenet of this book.
