This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein are 119 satirical cartoons published in Punch between 1890 and 1915 which focus on the growing threat of war in the years preceding and during the first two years of the GREAT WAR. The cartoons are grouped into the following categories: The Days Preceding the WarThe StruggleUncle SamThe Comedies of the Great TragedyWomen and Children FirstThe New Rake's Progress—Unser KaiserThe RaiderThe Unspeakable TurkItalia! The cartoons encompass all the Allied nations and most of those aligned with the Central Powers. The sea war also features the antics of both navies and of course the sinking of non-military liners. During the war the media swung into action in effect becoming an Allied propaganda machine. In addition to Punch, Dutchman Louis Raemakers was also proactive in this media. Raemakers cartoons were so effective that he and his family had to flee the Netherlands when the German High Command offered a reward for his capture. Working in London he continued to publish his cartoons mainly in The Times and even went on a promotional tour of the USA. It was thought that his many works, which can be seen in the eBooks Raemakers Cartoons of WWI – vols. 1 & 2, was partly instrumental in changing the opinion of the American public towards involvement in the “European” war. The effect of these cartoons on rallying public opinion before and during the Great War was incalculable and the propaganda machine continued to play a major role in the conflicts following the Great War. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Punch, Cartoons, Published, Louis Raemakers, , Admiral, Allies, Australia, Austria, BELGIUM, BELIEVE, Berlin, BLOCKADE, Boer, Botha, Britain, British, Brusilov, Bull, CALAIS, Camel, Canada, Captain, Chorus, Christian, Dame, dangerous, Delville Wood,, EAGLE, Eagle, Eastern, Emperor, ENEMY, Europa, Europe, FAIR, FOUL, FRONT, Gallipoli, General, German, German Headquarters, GOD, Grand, GREAT WAR, HATE, Holland, HONOUR, Hood, Imperial, India, Inter-Parliamentary, JACK-IN-THE-BOX, John, Kaiser Wilhelm, KING, Marne, Messines, New Zealand, Officer, Order, PARIS, Passchendaele, Photographer, Pilot, Prince, RAIDER, Red, Riding, RUSSIA, South Africa, South West Africa, Spring Offensive, STOP, Sultan, The Somme, Tipperary, Tirpitz, TRIUMPH, Turk, Turkey, Uncle Sam, United States of America, USA, Verdun, Western Front, WILLIAM, WOMEN, WWI, Ypres, Propaganda, media, newspaper, magazine

Book excerpt: Whether producing strips, social comment in magazines like Punch or Lilliput, savage caricature of allies and enemies, or a daily chronicle of events at home or abroad, little escaped the cartoonists pen during World War II and they encapsulated the great dramas in a way impossible in prose. This book is divided into chapters covering the war year-by-year, each chapter prefaced with a concise introduction that provides a historical framework for the cartoons of that year. Altogether some 300 cartoons, in color and black and white, have been skillfully blended to produce a unique record of World War II.

Book excerpt: "This enormous selection, which must rank as one of the best cartoon compilations of all time, has been specially selected by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and former curator of the Punch Collection. Leafing through its pages you are transported from the parlors and drawing rooms of the 19th century, with insolent servants and arrogant aristocrats, through the smoggy streets and crowded omnibuses of the cities, to the open fields of the country where "townies" shelter from the rain to the scorn of the locals, and would be fishermen and golfers find frustration." "The First World War brings a brash patriotism that leads to a cynical look at the hedonism of the Twenties, pokes fun at the new suburbanites and celebrates the growth of mass entertainment and travel. With the coming of World War Two all the restrictions, foibles and fears of wartime on the Home Front and in the Armed Forces are reflected in Punch's cartoons. But the fun returns with the post-war boom. Consumerism develops, then it's into the Swinging Sixties - popular music, modern art and youth in rebellion. The excesses of the Eighties are chronicled and Nineties are chronicled too. Mr. Punch's cartoonists were there to observe it all, and yon can too, in the pages of this magnificent tome." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known today as the illustrator for Lewis Carroll's Alice books, John Tenniel was the Victorian era's chief political cartoonist. This extensively illustrated book is the first to draw almost exclusively on primary sources in family collections, public archives, and other depositories. Frankie Morris examines Tenniel's life and work, producing a book that is not only a definitive resource for scholars and collectors but one that can be easily enjoyed by everyone interested in Victorian life and art, social history, journalism and political cartoons, and illustrated books. In the first part of the book, Morris looks at Tenniel the man. From his sunny childhood and early enthusiasm for sports, theater, and medievalism to his flirtation with high art and fifty years in the close brotherhood of the London journal Punch, Tenniel is shown to have been the sociable and urbane humorist revealed in his drawings. According to his countrymen Tenniel's work--and his Punch cartoons in particular--would embody for future historians the "trend and character" of Victorian thought and life. Morris assesses to what extent that prediction has been fulfilled. The biography is followed by three parts on Tenniel's work, consisting of thirteen independent essays in which the author examines Tenniel's methods and his earlier book illustrations, the Alice pictures, and the Punch cartoons. She addresses such little-understood subjects as Tenniel's drawings on wood, his relationship with Lewis Carroll, and his controversial Irish cartoons, and inquires into the salient characteristics of his approximately 4,500 drawings for books and journals. For lovers of Alice, Morris offers six chapters on Tenniel's work for Carroll. These reveal demonstrable links with Christmas pantomimes, Punch and Judy shows, nursery toys, magic lanterns, nineteenth-century grotesques, Gothic revivalism, and social caricatures. In five probing studies, Morris demonstrates how Tenniel's cartoons depicted the key political questions of his day--the Eastern Question, which brought into opposition the great rivals Gladstone and Disraeli; trade-union issues and franchise reform; Irish resistance to British rule; and Lincoln and the American Civil War--examining their assumptions, devices, and evolving strategies. An appendix identifies some 1,500 unmonogrammed drawings done by Tenniel in his first twelve years on Punch. The definitive study of both the man and the work, Artist of Wonderland gives an unprecedented view of the cartoonist whose adroit adaptations of elements from literature, art, and above all the stage succeeded in mythologizing the world for generations of Britons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Civil War Humor, author Cameron C. Nickels examines the various forms of comedic popular artifacts produced in America from 1861 to 1865, and looks at how wartime humor was created, disseminated, and received by both sides of the conflict. Song lyrics, newspaper columns, sheet music covers, illustrations, political cartoons, fiction, light verse, paper dolls, printed envelopes, and penny dreadfuls—from and for the Union and the Confederacy—are analyzed at length. Nickels argues that the war coincided with the rise of inexpensive mass printing in the United States and thus subsequently with the rise of the country's widely distributed popular culture. As such, the war was as much a “paper war”—involving the use of publications to disseminate propaganda and ideas about the Union and the Confederacy's positions—as one taking place on battlefields. Humor was a key element on both sides in deflating pretensions and establishing political stances (and ways of critiquing them). Civil War Humor explores how the combatants portrayed Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, life on the home front, battles, and African Americans. Civil War Humor reproduces over sixty illustrations and texts created during the war and provides close readings of these materials. At the same time, it places this corpus of comedy in the context of wartime history, economies, and tactics. This comprehensive overview examines humor's role in shaping and reflecting the cultural imagination of the nation during its most tumultuous period.
