Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as core text or handy reference on two key areas of metallic materials: (i) mechanical behavior and properties evaluated by mechanical testing; and (ii) different types of metal working or forming operations to produce useful shapes. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into two parts. The first part contains nine chapters which describe tension (including elastic stress – strain relation, relevant theory of plasticity, and strengthening methods), compression, hardness, bending, torsion – pure shear, impact loading, creep and stress rupture, fatigue, and fracture. The second part is composed of seven chapters and covers fundamentals of mechanical working, forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing of flat strip, round bar, and tube, deep drawing, and high-energy rate forming. The book comprises an exhaustive description of mechanical properties evaluated by testing of metals and metal working in sufficient depth and with reasonably wide coverage. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and includes many solved problems. More than 150 numerical problems and many multiple choice questions as exercise along with their answers have also been provided. The mathematical analyses are well elaborated without skipping any intermediate steps. Slab method of analysis or free-body equilibrium approach is used for the analytical treatment of mechanical working processes. For hot working processes, different frictional conditions (sliding, sticking and mixed sticking–sliding) have been considered to estimate the deformation loads. In addition to the slab method of analysis, this book also contains slip-line field theory, its application to the static system, and the steady state motion, Further, this book includes upper-bound theorem, and upper-bound solutions for indentation, compression, extrusion and strip drawing. The book can be used to teach graduate and undergraduate courses offered to students of mechanical, aerospace, production, manufacturing and metallurgical engineering disciplines. The book can also be used for metallurgists and practicing engineers in industry and development courses in the metallurgy and metallic manufacturing industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable reference for the materials engineer, the manufacturing engineer, or the technician who wants a practical description of fabrication processes. Sheet metal fabrication processes are receiving greater attention and are more widely applied by the metalworking industries because of the savings in cost and material. This book compiles the proven theories and operations tested in industrial applications. Focus is on the non-chip-producing machine tools that shape metals by shearing, pressing and forming. New materials and advances in tooling are discussed, as well as the need for applied science in optimizing the operations for sheet metal fabrication processes. Examples of each of these forming processes are given, and the text also describes the mechanics of each process so that a logical decision can be made concerning the best operation for a specific result. The volume is divided into five sections each consisting of a series of chapters. The major sections cover fabricating presses, stamping and forming operations, plastics for tooling, structural shapes, and non-traditional machining. A section on definitions and terminology is also included. The book is profusely illustrated and indexed, making it easy to find references to specific forming topics. Written by an expert with 40 years of hands-on practical engineering experience, this Handbook contains the essential information you need on forming methods, machinery and the response of materials.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Punches, Dies and Tools for Manufacturing in Presses: A Cyclopaedia of Die-Making, Punch-Making, Die-Sinking, Sheet Metal Working, and Making of Special Tools, Devices and Mechanical Combinations for Piercing, Punching, Cutting, Bending, Forming, Drawing, Compressing, Embossing, Forging and Assembling Metal Throughout this entire volume it has been my endeavor to eliminate all obsolete processes, designs, and methods; to confine myself exclusively to the design, use, adaptation, and operation of the numerous sets of tools illustrated, and to make as brief as possible the descriptions relating to the most modern and approved methods for constructing such tools. The fundamentals have been fully and comprehensively covered in the first volume. When it is considered that all other branches of practical mechanics enjoy a wide and extensive literature, it is indeed strange that until lately this branch possessed comparatively none. For many years all mechanics interested in the use and operation of dies, presses, and other sheet-metal working tools in modern use, were without any work that treated of these subjects in a thoroughly practical manner. The wide circulation of my first volume demonstrated the widespread interest in the subjects and the need for other works that would cover the art carefully, authoritatively, and entirely. There fore, I beg to state that in this work I have striven to deal with the subjects which come within the scope of the book in a thoroughly practical manner, to the exclusion of all that is technical or that might appear in any way ambiguous to the practical man. A large number of valuable and inter esting processes, rules, formulas, and designs have been em bodied in the work, and it is believed will be found of ines timable value in connection with the construction, use, and adaptation of dies and press tools which form the subject matter of the book.
