Book Synopsis Improvising Planned Development on the Gezira Plain, Sudan, 1900-1980 by : Maurits W. Ertsen
Download or read book Improvising Planned Development on the Gezira Plain, Sudan, 1900-1980 written by Maurits W. Ertsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical image of the Gezira Scheme, the large-scale irrigation scheme started under British colonial rule in Sudan, is of a centrally planned effort by a central colonial power controlling tenants and cotton production. However, any idea(l)s of planned irrigation and profit in Gezira had to be realized by African farmers and European officials, who both had their own agendas. Projects like Gezira are best understood in terms of continuous negotiations. This book rewrites Gezira’s history in terms of colonial control, farmers’ actions and resistance, and the broader development debate.

Book Synopsis Limnology and Marine Biology in the Sudan by : Henri J. Dumont
Download or read book Limnology and Marine Biology in the Sudan written by Henri J. Dumont and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book IS an attempt to review the state-of-the-art in the fields of limnology and of marine biology in the Sudan. The need for it became apparent while we were doing some joint field work in the Nile Valley and along the Red Sea coast. We feel that several reasons justify its publication. Firstly, a vast amount of information is being gathered year after year by the staff of the Hydrobiological Research U nit of the University of Khartoum, in conjunction with the faculties of Medicine and Agriculture of this university; much of this information fails to find an outlet to the scientific literature. Secondly, we did not want to restrict our book to the Nile Valley. The Nile is such a vital life artery to the Sudan that it has dominated limnological efforts in this country, to the neglect of other geographical areas. The same holds true for the field of marine biology, which lags far behind, despite the existence of a marine field laboratory at Suakin and a research institute at Port Sudan. It is hoped that both will develop considerably in the near future.
Book Synopsis Water, Civilisation and Power in Sudan by : Harry Verhoeven
Download or read book Water, Civilisation and Power in Sudan written by Harry Verhoeven and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, a secretive movement of Islamists allied itself to a military cabal to violently take power in Africa's biggest country. Sudan's revolutionary regime was built on four pillars - a new politics, economic liberalisation, an Islamic revival, and a U-turn in foreign relations - and mixed militant conservatism with social engineering: a vision of authoritarian modernisation. Water and agricultural policy have been central to this state-building project. Going beyond the conventional lenses of famine, 'water wars' or the oil resource curse, Harry Verhoeven links environmental factors, development, and political power. Based on years of unique access to the Islamists, generals, and business elites at the core of the Al-Ingaz Revolution, Verhoeven tells the story of one of Africa's most ambitious state-building projects in the modern era - and how its gamble to instrumentalise water and agriculture to consolidate power is linked to twenty-first-century globalisation, Islamist ideology, and intensifying geopolitics of the Nile.

Book Synopsis Class and Power in Sudan by : Tim Niblock
Download or read book Class and Power in Sudan written by Tim Niblock and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the attention of the industrialized world focused on the political, economic, and social strife of Africa, Tim Niblock travels to Sudan for a first-hand investigation of the socio-economic structure of that continent's largest country. His findings hold significant implications for the wider context of Africa, the Arab countries, and the Third World. His is a systematic and comprehensive study of Sudanese politics. A country with immense economic potential, possessing extensive tracts of cultivable but currently uncultivated land, Sudan could emerge as a major source of food for the Arab world. Yet it is threatened by famine while attempts at development are frustrated by civil war and political disarray. Niblock examines the political, economic, and social factors that have shaped the country's development. The fate of Sudan will be critical to the political stability of North-East Africa and the Red Sea area, and the Sudanese experience is instructive for underdeveloped countries as a whole.
Book Synopsis Dividing the Nile by : David E. Mills
Download or read book Dividing the Nile written by David E. Mills and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholarship has attributed Sudanese independence in 1956 to British dominance of the Condominium, historical animosity toward Egypt, or the emergence of Sudanese nationalism. Dividing the Nile counters that Egyptian entrepreneurs failed to develop a united economy or shared economic interests, guaranteeing Egypt's 'loss' of the Sudan. It argues that British dominance of the Condominium may have stymied initial Egyptian efforts, but that after the First World War Egypt became increasingly interested in and capable of economic ventures in the Sudan. However, early Egyptian financial assistance and the seemingly successful resolution of Nile waters disputes actually divided the regions, while later concerted efforts to promote commerce and acquire Sudanese lands failed dismally. Egyptian nationalists simply missed opportunities of aligning their economic future with that of their Sudanese brethren, resulting in a divided Nile valley. Dividing the Nile will appeal to historians, social scientists, and international relations theorists, among those interested in Nile valley developments, but its focused economic analysis will also contribute to broader scholarship on nationalism and nationalist theory.

Book Synopsis Politics and Islam in Contemporary Sudan by : Abdel Salam Sidahmed
Download or read book Politics and Islam in Contemporary Sudan written by Abdel Salam Sidahmed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why wasn't Islam the rallying point and battle cry of the anti-colonial movement in the Sudan? Why did the mainstream political parties and the first military regime maintain the 'secular' political structures of the colonial state? Why did the influential parties opt for an 'Islamic constitution' in the 1960s? Why did Nimeiry's regime change is course? This work attempts to answer these and related questions. Three key issues are addressed within the framework of the relationship between Islam, society and politics : the manifestation of Islam in the particular context of Sudanese society; the politicisation / repoliticisation of Islam and the Islamicisation of politics; and the mechanisms that influence the rise of a specific Islamicist force or enhance calls for Islamicisation.
