Book excerpt: “Know your value” and “Find your voice” are two popular motivational recommendations promoted by advocates who want to help aspiring men and women attain a more prominent, influential, and better compensated role in society. Whether in business, government, politics, education, health care or ministry, they are proven factors for achieving relevance and success. In Bruce Johnson’s memoir, Voices from Pulpit and Pew, the author celebrates how, over the thirty-seven years of his pastorate in Coventry, Connecticut, the laity have known their value and discovered and used their voices to define and operationalize a theology that effectively communicated the essence of their faith and ministry. Implicit in their daily religious narratives are discernible truths that inspire and sustain us. His voices from both pulpit and pew tell stories and impart insights that lift the soul.

Download or read book ReMission written by Gary Comer and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systemic disease is lurking inside the church that is derailing it from what God intended it to be, to know, and to do. That disease manifests in practical ignorance and isolation. If the church is to be healthy and thriving, its members must gain the needed know-how and skill sets to meaningfully engage with their increasingly difficult-to-reach unsaved neighbors, communities, and cultures in productive conversations about the good news of Jesus Christ. In other words, there must be a re-missioning of the body of Christ. ReMission practically equips leaders with tried-and-tested solutions that can outwardly mobilize a congregation, small group, or nonprofit ministry, and substantially increase the spiritual vitality of the body of Christ, both locally and globally. .

While not focused on any particular denomination, they represent a composite of church folk who make church membership and attendance such a fascinating experience. Because the black church embraces a complex diversity of cultures, social values, and spiritual manifestations, its impossible to stereotype black church folk. Having come to a point of breakthrough and deliverance from this internal hell, she is finally able to make the only decision that can save her son¿s life. You will read of their struggles to keep shelter over their heads and food on their table. And how, by modern-day miracles, the Lord provided their daily needs day by day. You watch his fall and the depth of it. You cheer and laugh at the way the Lord brings him to repentance and back into the holy calling of the Lord. Book Synopsis Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith by : Terry Rey
Download or read book Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith written by Terry Rey and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, significant numbers of Haitian immigrants began to arrive and settle in Miami. Overcoming some of the most foreboding obstacles ever to face immigrants in America, they, their children, and now their grandchildren, as well as more recently arriving immigrants from Haiti, have diversified socioeconomically. Together, they have made South Florida home to the largest population of native-born Haitians and diasporic Haitians outside of the Caribbean and one of the most significant Caribbean immigrant communities in the world. Religion has played a central role in making all of this happen. Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith is a historical and ethnographic study of Haitian religion in immigrant communities, based on fieldwork in both Miami and Haiti, as well as extensive archival research. Where many studies of Haitian religion limit themselves to one faith, Rey and Stepick explore Catholicism, Protestantism, and Vodou in conversation with one another, suggesting that despite the differences between these practices, the three faiths ultimately create a sense of unity, fulfillment, and self-worth in Haitian communities. This meticulously researched and vibrantly written book contributes to the growing body of literature on religion among new immigrants, as well as providing a rich exploration of Haitian faith communities.
