Book excerpt: The only valid correlation between guns possessed and gun crime committed is in the inner cities -- or outer third world nations. In the US, some of areas where there are the most guns are the least problematic. Guns are not really the issue unless (impossible) there were none. No guns, no gun violence. But this survey of information available, and my own viewpoints, should base one's conclusion regarding "gun control". Yes, CONTROL is necessary the same as in control of who drives a car. But any desire to outlaw private ownership of guns is absurd.

Book excerpt: By 2040, the US corrections system had found an unbeatable way to save money. Simply send them out of the present world. ..send them to a very ancient past world. Time travel technology had blossomed, but was exclusively used by the government. Men like Jimmy Dantly had been highly educated in the field, and worked for the government, doing research and maintenance. For Jimmy, everything was turning up roses, until a freak accident at work turned his world upside down. A coworker was killed, and the evidence pointed to Jimmy, though he was innocent. He felt certain he would be exonerated , but the investigation and subsequent trial seemed to prove his guilt. The final blow, from a southern California judge, sent him reeling. The judge sentenced him to be sent to the Cretaceous period of history...the most active time for dinosaurs. Jimmy could do nothing other than cooperate. As he walked through the doors of the transport chamber, he shook his head, knowing he himself had helped build them. Suddenly he was thrust into a completely different world. He was fortunate to hook up with a fellow prisoner. Rick had survived a year there, and teamed up with Jimmy for better odds of staying alive. The two witnessed the arrival of a third inmate, Glen. Glen and Jimmy were each given high powered rifles by a sympathetic transporter attendant. Each man had specific skills that helped the group survive. Step by step they formulated and executed plans, first for safety, and then for escape from the primitive and violent world they lived in. This story shows what the human spirit can endure, and how ingenious the mind can be. It reaches the depth of terror, and the height of elation. These men combined their strengths to reach impossible goals, overcoming odds against them with their wit.

Book excerpt: Humans have expanded out into their solar system and the Off Earth Settlers have created a truly free society. Independent people living the life they want with no interference. But this life hangs in the balance. Living off Earth requires a great deal of energy which means a great deal of methane is needed. Luckily a ready supply is laying right here on the surface of Pluto, an icy rock at the edge of mankind's space. Timothy Krane and his crew are here, struggling constantly against the unforgiving environment and the unrelenting cold, to keep the supply line running. Everything changes when they discover a murderer among them. This is followed by a series of seemingly pointless and increasingly deadly acts of sabotage which crank up the pressure cooker they are living in. Thrust into a role he is ill prepared for, Krane must work to uncover those responsible as he tries to prevent his crew and the miners from splitting into warring factions and, as always, to keep the methane moving.

Book excerpt: The book details the adventures of the eldest son of a working-class family from the urban Midwest who enters the army in the late 1960s and is transformed from a naive cowboy idolizer into a devious, larcenous, gun-carrying reprobate. He delves into the world of black market activities, prostitutes, drugs, and race relations and emerges a callous man for whom death is divided into two basic classes: bodies that are sent away and those that are dismissed as the impersonal enemy. Raised in an all-white environment and having had only one long-term exposure to a person of color, during a short period attending a seminary, he was taught to treat others fairly or to ignore them if their behavior warranted it. In the army, he encounters young men from every part of the country. Some require special treatment, while others introduce him to layers of the spectrum of life, which he did not know existed. He receives specialized training and, instead of being sent directly to Vietnam, is dispatched to Germany to participate in the Cold War in a very active manner. While in the army from 1967 to 1970, he wrote over five hundred letters, many to a girl with whom relations ended upon his return from Vietnam. She gave all the letters back, and they stayed on a shelf, waiting to fulfill the promise to someday write a book about the things that happened. His father also returned the letters that were written to him, which described the language used, the abuse suffered, and the status of race and homosexual relations, as well as the horrors of war, in no uncertain terms. The letters remained untouched for nearly fifty years, but he would sometimes recount an incident to friends or family, receiving in return an urging to write the stories for them. His older daughter chronologically organized the letters, while his other daughter edited the manuscript as it was being written. The idea to write this book, as well as its title, struck while joking with fellow GI’s in the barracks about someday telling the world that no one would believe the things they were doing in the name of serving their country. They would develop audacious pranks to outdo one another or minimalize a situation and just be glad to live another day. They often remarked about spending parents’ and grandparents’ tax money on atrocious wastes of effort and material. The military personnel during the late ’60s fit three distinct categories: juicers, heads, and straights. The first included men from every state, since almost everyone drank now and then. The second referred to the use of acid by some, while smokers and dopers fit right in. Lastly, there were some individuals who preferred not to get wasted by any means. Homosexuals and blacks could occupy any of the groups. The story details army life for a middle-class Midwest man who is introduced to conditions and concepts he had never imagined in Europe, then in the States, and finally in Vietnam. The intended audience is adult, mostly because of the language and the portrayal of man’s cruelty to man, while on the other hand, the book is both nostalgic as well as informative.

Book excerpt: In the dreams of Bret Harvey, a huge orange fireball has destroyed much of the landscape. It is a desert now, lifeless and filled with broken houses. Food is scarce. To see a human is rare. The Dark Ones, with their childlike voices and fingers like long knives, are constantly pursuing Harvey. Welcome to Serotonia, the very unpleasant world where Harvey's dreams take place. It's a world created by the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to help Harvey cope with his depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The side effects of the drug cast a spell on his subconscious, creating a sequence of chilling dreams, which he retells in Serotonia. The dreams expose some of the most raw and haunting parts of his psyche. In succession, the dreams tell the story of what is wrong in his life and how Harvey must face it. He returns to Serotonia each night, trying to discover what the Dark Ones really want. Serotonia leads him through a rabbit hole of terror while he tries to find the sense of peace that we all search for and learns how to cope with the darker side of himself.
