Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1927, Vol. 43: In Two Parts-Part I The field work that resulted in the present report was begun in 1912 when Lewis Radcliffe and the late William W. Welsh undertook a study of the anadromous clupeoids principally on the Potomac River and at the head of Chesapeake Bay. These studies were continued more or less intermittently until the winter of 1914 - 15, when the Fisheries steamer Fish Hawk was assigned to this work and the scope was enlarged to include a general biological and physical examination of Chesapeake Bay. This work, which was then under the supervision of Lewis Radcliffe, was interrupted by the World War. It was resumed in 1920 under the immediate supervision of Dr. R. P. Cowles, of Johns Hopkins University. In 1921 the general survey was supplemented by a special investigation of the fishes of Chesapeake Bay by the authors of the present report and was continued at intervals until the fall of 1922, when all the field operations pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay investigations were brought to a close. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States, Vol. 40: Bureau of Fisheries, 1924 In the summer of 1912 the Bureau of Fisheries, with the cooperation of the Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard University, undertook an oceano graphic and biological survey of the Gulf of Maine, with special reference to its fishes and floating plants and animals (plankton), its physical and chemical state, and the circulation of its waters. Subsequent cruises were made on the fisheries schooner Grampus during the summers and autumns of 1913, 1914, 1915, and 1916, and during the winters and springs of 1913 and 1915. The work was interrupted by the war, but was resumed with a cruise of the fisheries steamer Albatross in the late winter and spring of 1920 and continued by the fisheries steamer Halcyon during the winter and spring of 1920 - 21 and the summers of 1921 and 1922. Several reports on special phases of the survey have been published, but not until 1920 did the body of data warrant undertaking a general account of the fish fauna, general biology, and oceanography of the Gulf, of which the present memoir is the first part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1928, Vol. 44 It has been observed, also, by a number of investigators that there ex1sts a definite relation between the temperature of Water and the B. Colt score in the Oysters. Gorham Pease and Gage and Go'rham (1925) have shown that in winter the bacterial content Of oysters taken from polluted waters is abnormally low. Discussing this phenomenon, ' the investigators attributed it to the slowing down of biological activity of the oyster as a result of a reduction of temperature and came to the conclusion that with the' decrease in temperature the oyster passes into a State of hibernation. Round working on the bacteriology of oysters, came to the Conclusion that Oysters close their shells for varying periods of time, depending on temperature. 'according to his Opinion the opening and closing of the shell 18 controlled by the rapidity of metabolic processes, which in turn are controlled by temperature. He failed to support this statement with the experimental data, however. Cumming (1916) has shown that January and February were the months when the B. Colt content of water taken at the mouths of rivers was highest and the Iowest for oysters taken from the same locality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1917-1918, Vol. 36 It is the purpose of this paper to direct attention to some little known but very important food fishes in Bear Lake, Idaho and Utah. Aside from their value as food, these fishes are of interest to ichthyologists, as they belong to previously unknown forms that have managed to survive as representatives of an ancient quaternary fauna, which was no doubt composed of numerous species Of relatively wide distribution. At present they are confined to a single small lake, and they therefore remind us of the animals Of certain oceanic islands which have been preserved under favorable conditions, while Others of their kind less favored have long since passed away. Bear Lake is a part of the drainage system of Great Salt Lake, the connection being through Bear River, which has its origin among the mountains of the eastern slopes of the Wasatch Ranges. Through the channel Of its outlet, Bear Lake Was at one time connected with the quaternary Lake Bonneville, the Shore lines of which are still plainly traced along the sides of the bordering mountains. The outlet of Lake Bonneville carried its overflow into Snake River, and thus Bear Lake was for a time a part of the Columbia River system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. 37: 1919-1920 It remained, therefore, for Gilbert (1913) to give us the first accurate description of the general features of the life history Of the chinook salmon in his paper, The Age at Maturity of the Pacific Coast Salmon Of the genus Oncorhynchus. In this he shows, among other things, that: (a) The chinook, or king, salmon spawn normally either in the fourth, fifth, Sixth, or seventh year, the females more frequently in the fourth year; (b) the grilse are exclusively males and are of two sizes, representing two and three year fish; (0) the young may migrate as fry soon after hatching, or may remain in the stream until their second spring, migrating as yearlings; and (d) among the fish Of any given age, the larger specimens will be those which migrated seaward as fry, although these do not attain the average stature Of those fish, one year older, which migrated as yearlings. In a recent paper Fraser (1917) has verified some of Gilbert's findings and has extended the study to the spring salmon found in the Straits Of Georgia. He has worked out quite conclusively the rate of growth during the life in the sea and also the time Of formation of the winter check. The present study is a continuation Of that begun by Gilbert, and the results thus far have been in perfect agreement with his, although the material has been much more abundant and diverse. The outline of the life history of the chinook as given by him may be almost indefinitely extended, but it seems most unlikely that results maybe Obtained which are not in agreement with his original conclusions. At the beginning of this investigation it was supposed that an examination of the adult scales would give the data necessary for an understanding of the life history. Most Of the summer and autumn Of 1914 was, therefore, spent on the Columbia River col leeting scales and data from adult fish. Small series Of young, seaward migrants, were also taken at Astoria and Ilwaco, at the lower end of the Columbia estuary. Several collections of adult scales taken at spawning stations on various tributaries of the Columbia and Sacramento Rivers and collections of yearling chinooks made at Baird, Calif, were available for study through the courtesy Of Dr. C. H. Gilbert. Access was also had to a collection of young migrants from the Sacramento River through the kindness of N. B. Scofield, of the California Fish and Game Commission. These various collections were studied during the winter and spring of 1914 - 15. It was possible to verify the main conclusions reached by Gilbert as follows (1) The scales present two types of nuclear growth - one, the stream type, indicating that the fish migrated to the ocean after spending one year in fresh water, and the other, the sea type, indi cating that the fish migrated as a fry; (2) the chinobk may reach maturity at any time between the second and the seventh year. Those maturing in the second or third year are exclusively males. The prevailing ages at which maturity is reached by the chi nooks Of the Columbia River are 4 and 5 years, although fish in their sixth year are fairly common. Specimens maturing in their seventh year are very rare. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. 38: 1921-1922 The insects belonging to the family Chironomidae, commonly known as midges, constitute an obscure group of Diptera which, on account of their small size and inoffensive habits, have very largely escaped notice except as they may have been mistaken for mosquitoes, which they resemble only in general appearence. They are, however, very common in every community from the polar region to the Tropics. The adults are often seen on moist evenings flying in dense swarms near the ground, over sidewalks, or under trees by the roadside, and it is in this brief period of their existence, consisting of from 5 to 10 days, that they are most familiar to the general public. Closely related to the Chironomidae are the Orphnephilidae, a family of semiaquatic insects as scarce as the Chironomidae are common, the only known habitat in this country being in the environment of Ithaca, N. Y. The larval stages of the Chironomidae, which extend over a period varying from all winter to 25 or 30 days, according to food and weather conditions, are only infrequently observed, chiefly because of the small size and secluded habits of the larvae. They are aquatic, mainly fresh-water, insects living in burrows which they construct by fastening together the debris found at the bottom of ponds with silk secreted by their salivary glands. The great abundance of these larvae and their relation to other aquatic organisms were the fundamental considerations that gave impetus to this study. It was hoped that an investigation of their feeding habits would give a clue to the chief adaptations which have given rise to their numerical dominance and widespread distribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fishes: A Popular Treatise Upon the Game and Food Fishes of North America, With Especial Reference to Habits and Methods of Capture The work was the summary of the observations and reports Of a large corps of experts in ichthyology as well as fisheries and economics, originally employed by the Census Bureau. It contained a fund of information that could not be found in any other work accessible to the general public, and it still holds that place. Nevertheless, in the lapse of time, many changes had been made in the nomenclature of the species, not a few Species had been added, and several important groups of fishes that had been neglected required attention. The data in the work related to two independent subjects: one, the life history or habits of the Species; the other, the statistics of the fisheries. The former has not changed, and what was true fifteen years ago is still true the latter is constantly changing, but the relative values of the differ ent fisheries have not greatly varied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries, 1907, Vol. 27 The duodenum receives the hepatic and the pancreatic secretions, and also the secretion Of the pyloric appendages. The intestine varies much in length, and in many fishes the absorbing surface is increased by folds of the mucous membrane, which wind spirally or are arranged in parallel lamellae. These spiral valves are found in cyclostomes, selachians, ganoids, and dipnoans. In short, the digestive tract in fishes varies greatly, from a simple condition to a complex one, with valves, folds, and appendages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries, 1905, Vol. 25 Although it was apparent from the original description and Dr. Gilbert's notes that the trout described by Dr. Jordan was a fish of unusual beauty, and that the species found in Volcano Creek was even more beautiful, little was added to our knowledge of the trout of the Kern River region until recently. From time to time reports had come to the Bureau of Fisheries regarding the beauty, gameness, and delicious flavor of the golden trout of Volcano Creek, and then the fear began to be expressed that, owing to its extremely restricted habitat and the ease with which it may be captured, the species was in danger of extermination. Stewart Edward White visited the region in 1903 and, impressed with the ease with which the extinction of the species could be compassed, called the attention of the President to the matter and the President in turn brought it to the attention of Hon. George M. Bowers, Commissioner of Fisheries. Complying with the request of the President, the Commissioner ordered an investigation to be made for the purpose of determining (a) the natural geographic distribution of this trout, (b) its abundance, (0) its habits as to food and spawning time and its qualities as a food and game fish. (d) into what waters, if any, it has been transplanted, (e) into what other streams it 'iay be introduced, (f) whether its artificial propagation can be undertaken by the Bureau, and, finally, (g) what measures or regulations, if any, are necessary for the adequate protection of the species. An investigating party, under the writer's dirce tion, 'l outfitted at Redstone Park, Tulare County, Cal., with saddle horses, pack animals, and camping equipment, and on July 13, 1904, started for Volcano Creek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishing in American Waters: A New Edition, Containing Parts Six and Seven, on Southern and Miscellaneous Fishes The fishes of our coast and estuaries, and the peculiar methods adopted for their capture, form not only a sealed book to Europeans, but to those anglers in America also who confine their recreations to fresh-water attractions. Each game fish affords a distinct interest, with peculiarities worth studying. My sketches may lack artistic finish, but possess the merit of correct outline; and in the words of Raphael, The outline is the picture. The reader may be assured that fishing, whether for recreation or gain, entices its vo taries to unexplored sources of revenue and pleasure.
