Book excerpt: This book argues that public relations is not merely an organizational tool, but a powerful influence on social and political life. From carefully considered communication by multinational corporations, to government campaigns that manage public opinion, to the self-promotion of celebrities via social media, public relations is central to our individual and collective lives. Understanding Public Relations introduces a socio-cultural approach to public relations as a way of analysing the growing importance of public relations in its social, cultural and political contexts. Encouraging a deeper and more critical understanding of its influence on society, Lee Edwards: Explores public relations in relation to contemporary debates around promotional culture, discourse, globalisation, democracy and power Considers how public relations frames vital discussions of race, gender, class and ethics Brings theory to life with a range of case studies, including YouTube vlogging, the global fair trade movement and the 2016 EU referendum in the UK Both accessible and provocative, this is an invaluable resource for students and researchers exploring public relations theory, critical public relations, strategic communication and promotional culture.

Book Synopsis Public Relations and the Corporate Persona by : Burton Saint John III
Download or read book Public Relations and the Corporate Persona written by Burton Saint John III and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the last century, large, predominantly US corporations used public relations to demonstrate that their missions resonated with dominant societal values. Through the construction and conveyance of the "corporate persona", they aimed to convince citizens that they share common aspirations - and moreover that their corporate "soul" works as a beneficent force in society. Through examining key examples from the last 80 years, this book argues that PR, through the corporate persona, works to create a sense of shared reality between the corporation and the average citizen. This has been instrumental in conveying, across generations, that the corporation is an affinitive corporate persona - a fellow companion in the journey of life. The construct is obviously ripe for manipulation, and the role of PR in creating and promoting the corporate persona in order to align corporations and stakeholders is potentially problematic. From wage inequality to climate change, preserving the corporate status quo may be negative. This original and thought-provoking book not only critically analyses how PR and its role in the corporate persona works to solidify power, but also how that power might be used to further goals shared by the corporation and the individual. Scholars and advanced students of public relations, organizational communications and communication studies will find this book a challenging and illuminating read.
Book Synopsis Public Relations and Community by : Dean Kruckeberg
Download or read book Public Relations and Community written by Dean Kruckeberg and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This slim volume hits hard at one major point: public relations practitoners need to abandon their dominant attitude of narrowly serving the needs of their clients and instead attempt to engender a broad-based sense of community. By approaching public relations from this broader perspective both the needs of the client and the community are served. Implicit in this theory is that a closer-knit community will retain more traditional family-based values and therefore comprise a more stable and appreciative economic unit for one's client. Canadian Journal of Communication Public relations is commonly viewed as using persuasive communications to achieve a client's vested goal. Kruckeberg and Starck challenge this oversimplified approach, asserting that public relations is a complex, multi-flow process that should--and can--affect society as a whole. In Part I, they examine critically the historical definition and practice of public relations, outlining the shortcomings of this narrow approach. Part II explores how the community itself has changed. Such issues as the shift from rural to urban life and the attempt to regain a sense of community are discussed. Part III attempts to reconcile the authors' new notion of public relations and community through an in-depth case-study. The results lead the authors to conclude that only if public relations is practiced as an active attempt to build a sense of community can it become a full partner in the communications milieu.

Book Synopsis How Propaganda Became Public Relations by : Cory Wimberly
Download or read book How Propaganda Became Public Relations written by Cory Wimberly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Propaganda Became Public Relations pulls back the curtain on propaganda: how it was born, how it works, and how it has masked the bulk of its operations by rebranding itself as public relations. Cory Wimberly uses archival materials and wide variety of sources — Foucault’s work on governmentality, political economy, liberalism, mass psychology, and history — to mount a genealogical challenge to two commonplaces about propaganda. First, modern propaganda did not originate in the state and was never primarily located in the state; instead, it began and flourished as a for-profit service for businesses. Further, propaganda is not focused on public beliefs and does not operate mainly through lies and deceit; propaganda is an apparatus of government that aims to create the publics that will freely undertake the conduct its clients’ desire. Businesses have used propaganda since the early twentieth century to construct the laboring, consuming, and voting publics that they needed to secure and grow their operations. Over that time, corporations have become the most numerous and well-funded apparatuses of government in the West, operating privately and without democratic accountability. Wimberly explains why liberal strategies of resistance have failed and a new focus on creating mass subjectivity through democratic means is essential to countering propaganda. This book offers a sophisticated analysis that will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in social and political philosophy, Continental philosophy, political communication, the history of capitalism, and the history of public relations.

Book Synopsis Concept of Public Relations by : Niranjan Sinha
Download or read book Concept of Public Relations written by Niranjan Sinha and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-24 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Relations is that discipline which helps an organization run smoothly by contributing to its profit, growth and survival. This, translated simply would mean that Public Relations creates an understanding between a corporate body and its several publics which results in an easier and effective working relationships thereby promoting the growth of the organization in all spheres. This book is one of the most comprehensive and erudite books that has been written on Public Relations in India, touching on both Theory and Practice of Public Relations in India, and replete with examples, both national and international. In true sense, Public Relations is a relatively young profession, and therefore, is still suffering from the pangs of growing up: being misunderstood, being scoffed at, having a certain degree of cynicism and yes, a natural desire that the youth has of being appreciated. We are still growing up because half a century in the life of a profession is really not long enough. And there is also a lack of enough reading material on Public Relations. This book is a result of the author's knowledge of over three decades of serving at the help of the profession as corporate head of Public Relations and Human Resource Development and a teacher. The author has gone through all the various workings of Public Relations from Public Opinion to Corporate Identity, to Corporate Culture, and Planning, and to the nuts and volts of Employee Relations, Company Periodical, Social Responsibilities, Social Audit and Research in PR, etc. Most comprehensively, and in a manner which would help a Public Relations Practitioner to dot his 'i's and cross his 't's and learn his function. This is the practice part of this book.In the 'Theory' part too, the author has most conscientiously defined this 'still sometime-not-quite-understood profession, placed in the history of the evolution of disciplines and also substantiates its necessity. Public Relations acts as a catalyst and not as a filter, for the company's communication with the media. All our communications must be ethical and truthful. No amount of whitewashing bolsters up a weak case. Do not talk if you do not have a good enough message to convey. Fundamentally, Public Relations is a means by which an organization improves its operating environment. It is an avenue through which business and industry seek to improve their ability to function well. By enabling the industry to anticipate and adapt to societal demands and trends, Public Relations helps a company avoid possible points of conflict with its environment. It can smoothen the path of an organization's progress. Over and above, there is a marked shift in the goal of business from profit maximization to growth and security.Profit is no longer accepted as a consequence of business action.Profit, as it is said, is that food without which corporate life cannot be sustained. Hence to call profit as the goal of the company, is operationally speaking, silly. Profit, like eating, is a requisite, not a purpose. By the more exacting standard today, profit has become a rather ineffective measure of the social effectiveness of business. What society looks for business today is not merely profit a combination of professionalism and humanity. The business of business, it is being increasingly realised,is no longer business alone. In fact, profit can be achieved only when an organization has a reputation for adherence to core values even under the most trying circumstances. Core-values provide the glue that holds an organization together through testing time. Profit is a by-product of the core- values. Lastly, the growth of Public Relations is closely related to industrialization, urbanization and modernization that came in the wake of planned development in our country. Industrialization gave rise to a faceless and formal corporate structure. Concentration of masses of people in towns led to the need to communicate with mass audience.

It provides a systematic and coherent statement of the critical guidelines and philosophical underpinnings of public relations and as such should guide pedagogy and practice. It also supplies pedagogic and critical standards with which to meet the needs of an increasingly sophisticated society that tends to reject all of public relations as propaganda. With the enormous amount of money spent on product publicity and public policy debates, this book gives practitioners a sense of whether their public relations campaigns make a contribution to the organizational bottom line by means of achieving the timeless standards of the art of rhetoric.
