Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sixth volume in the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale reports Nightingale’s considerable accomplishments in the development of a public health care system based on health promotion and disease prevention. It follows directly from her understanding of social science and broader social reform activities, which were related in Society and Politics (Volume 5). Public Health Care includes a critical edition of Notes on Nursing for the Labouring Classes, papers on mortality in aboriginal schools and hospitals, and on rural health. It reports much unknown material on Nightingale’s signal contribution of bringing professional nursing into the dreaded workhouse infirmaries. This collection presents letters and notes on a wide range of issues from specific diseases to germ theory, and relates some of her own extensive work as a nurse practitioner, which included organizing referrals to doctors and providing related care. Currently, Volumes 1 to 11 are available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Presenting revealing insights into the structure and functioning of the Project 2000 courses, this book examines the original, creative and evolutionary research processes which led to the identification of student nurses’ unique and common experiences, and portrays the learning milieu in which students developed a self-concept of being a nurse. Employing Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the book explores the concepts of intentionality, thrownness, being-in-the-world-with-others, temporality and active subject . It represents a substantial contribution to existing knowledge concerning student reflection and development, forms of teaching, leadership and supervision, and student exposure to a variety of experiences in clinical practice. It also contributes important new perspectives both to ongoing discussions related to socialization theory and to the qualitative methodology literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Death is inevitable--none of us will escape it. Ending life with a terminal illness is a slow and rather lonely process. I am interested in the question of why some nurses choose to work in the field of palliative care. I am one who willingly stepped into the role of being with patients at their most vulnerable time ?when death became inevitable. My nursing history has spanned fifty years, of which the last twenty were in palliative care of terminally ill and dying patients. What was it that influenced me to move from a curing model to comfort caring only? My work is an account of how I discovered palliative care nursing after thirty years in the acute-care setting. I migrated to Australia at the age of seventeen after the violence of World War II and the death of my father in a refugee camp. It seemed that taking on nursing was the best way to settle into a new life. I was happy with general nursing but had a feeling that there was more I could contribute to my patient care. My mother's unexpected death with cancer was responsible for showing the way. She died in the hospice unit of the hospital where I was employed. Sitting by her side showed me another aspect of nursing that attracted me to a career change. I transferred to the Hospice after mother died and remained there for twenty years. Naturally I wondered why this change of direction happened.' - Susan Bardy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three major audiences for this book. The first is made is of National Health Service Trust Chief Executives, Nurse Directors, Medical Directors, Human Resource Directors and also leaders of Workforce Development Confederations in England and regional Workforce Development Groups in Scotland. The onus is firmly on them in the early years of the 21st century to resource, develop and progress the empowerment of front-line clinical staff in health care organisations and to enable devolved decision-making processes much closer to the patient. Shared Governance offers a proven and practical means of making that happen and this book should give them some robust tools to take this forward. The second audience are those people within NHS Trusts who are concerned with Clinical Governance on a day-to-day basis. The best guarantee of the quality of health care probably does not lie in a regime of inspections, assessments, appraisals and reviews (although they do have their place), but instead with clinical professionals regularly and systematically reviewing their practice and seeking to improve it. Shared Governance provides a pragmatic framework within which that process can take place and a means of actively involving the 'big battalions' of clinical staff. The third and final audience are the Shared Governance Co-ordinators and the Chairs, Deputy Chairs and Secretaries of Shared Governance councils. They are the 'poor bloody infantry' of Shared Governance and the difference between its success or failure. For them this publication is intended to be a helpful compendium or source-book from which they can draw and adapt material to suit their own local circumstances in as flexible a manner as possible.
