Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this publication was aimed at defining the current concepts of trauma induced coagulopathy by critically analyzing the most up-to-date studies from a clinical and basic science perspective. It served as a reference source for any clinician interested in reviewing the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the coagulopathic trauma patient, and the data that supports it. By meticulously describing the methodology of most traditional as well as state of the art coagulation assays the reader is provided with a full understanding of the tests that are used to study trauma induced coagulopathy. With the growing interest in understanding and managing coagulation in trauma, this second edition has been expanded to 46 chapters from its original 35 to incorporate the massive global efforts in understanding, diagnosing, and treating trauma induced coagulopathy. The evolving use of blood products as well as recently introduced hemostatic medications is reviewed in detail. The text provides therapeutic strategies to treat specific coagulation abnormalities following severe injury, which goes beyond the first edition that largely was based on describing the mechanisms causing coagulation abnormalities. Trauma Induced Coagulopathy 2nd Edition is a valuable reference to clinicians that are faced with specific clinical challenges when managing coagulopathy.

Book excerpt: This report presents a cost analysis of Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (PTT) production starting from raw sugar and terephthalic acid. The process examined combines a process similar to DuPont process for generating propanediol and a process similar to Degussa (now Evonik) process for producing PTT. In this process, raw sugar (sucrose) is diluted and sucrose is hydrolyzed into glucose and fructose (invert sugars). The invert sugars are then fermented to produce Propanediol. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: 1,3-Polypropylene Terephthalate, TPA, Dimethyl Terephthalate, DMT, Bio-PDO, Trimethylene Glycol, PTT, Aerobic Fermentation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make sure you are thoroughly prepared to work in a clinical laboratory. Rodak's Hematology: Clinical Principles and Applications, 7th Edition uses hundreds of full-color photomicrographs to help you understand the essentials of hematology and hemostasis. This new edition details the parts and functions of the cell; shows how to accurately identify cells; covers normal hematopoiesis through diseases of erythroid, myeloid, lymphoid, and megakaryocytic origins; and simplifies hemostasis and thrombosis concepts and disorders. Easy to follow and understand, this book also covers key topics, including working in the hematology and hemostasis laboratory; complementary testing areas such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics; and laboratory testing of blood cells and body fluid cells. Over 700 full-color illustrations and photomicrographs make it easier for students to visualize hematology concepts and show what they'll encounter in the lab, with images appearing near their mentions in the text to minimize flipping pages back and forth. Content throughout text reflects latest information on hematology. Instructions for lab procedures include sources of possible errors along with comments. Hematology instruments are described, compared, and contrasted. Case studies in each chapter provide opportunities to apply hematology concepts to real-life scenarios. Hematology/hemostasis reference ranges are listed on the inside front and back covers for quick reference. A bulleted summary makes it easy for students to review the important points in every chapter. Learning objectives begin each chapter and indicate what students should achieve, with review questions appearing at the end. - NEW! Chapter on Patient Safety in Hematology and Hemostasis. - NEW! Section on hematology and hemostasis in transgender populations. - UPDATED! White blood cell chapters are current with the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours. - NEW! Book excerpt: Due to the possibility that petroleum supplies will be exhausted in the next decades to come, more and more attention has been paid to the production of bacterial pl- tics including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), biopolyethylene (PE), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), and poly(p-phenylene) (PPP). These are well-studied polymers containing at least one monomer synthesized via bacterial transformation. Among them, PHA, PLA and PBS are well known for their biodegradability, whereas PE, PTT and PPP are probably less biodegradable or are less studied in terms of their biodegradability. Over the past years, their properties and appli- tions have been studied in detail and products have been developed. Physical and chemical modifications to reduce their cost or to improve their properties have been conducted. PHA is the only biopolyester family completely synthesized by biological means. They have been investigated by microbiologists, molecular biologists, b- chemists, chemical engineers, chemists, polymer experts, and medical researchers for many years. PHA applications as bioplastics, fine chemicals, implant biomate- als, medicines, and biofuels have been developed. Companies have been est- lished for or involved in PHA related R&D as well as large scale production. It has become clear that PHA and its related technologies form an industrial value chain in fermentation, materials, feeds, and energy to medical fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis is a manual-style book that links transfusion medicine and hemostasis to laboratory methods and diagnostic tests engaged in routine and specialized coagulation laboratories. The book is divided into two main parts with chapters that are brief and readable. The first main part of the book is subdivided into blood banking and transfusion medicine. Under blood banking, the chapters cover blood collection, donation process, component manufacturing, donor testing and storage; transfusion-medicine chapters examine the components for transfusion, pre-transfusion immunohematology testing, blood groups, blood products and their modifications, approaches to transfusion therapy in specific clinical settings, and transfusion reactions and complications. In addition, chapters that talk about apheresis, cellular therapy, and tissue banking in the hospital setting are included. Hemostasis, the second main part of the book, is subdivided into three sections. The first section, clinical coagulation, includes chapters about neonatal thrombocytopenia, inherited platelet function disorders, immune thrombocytopenia, immune-mediated coagulopathies, congenital bleeding disorders, and acquired bleeding disorders. The second section relates to laboratory testing of coagulation, with chapters about laboratory assessments of platelet disorders, von Willebrand disease, coagulation factor disorders, fibrinogen and fibrinolysis, tests for hypercoagulable state and for activation of the coagulation system, and laboratory support for anticoagulation. The third section discusses coagulation factor products. This book will be valuable for the education of trainees, practitioners, and future leaders in these fields.
