Book Synopsis Philosophy of Mental Disorder by : Sanja Dembić
Download or read book Philosophy of Mental Disorder written by Sanja Dembić and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an ability-based view of mental disorders. It develops a detailed analysis of the concept of inability that is relevant in the psychiatric and psychotherapeutic context by drawing on the most recent literature on the concepts of ability, reasons, and harm. What is it to have a mental disorder? This book contends that an individual has a mental disorder if and only if (1) they are・in the relevant sense・unable to respond adequately to their available (apparent) reasons in their thinking, feeling, or acting, and (2) they are harmed by the condition underlying or resulting from that inability. The author calls this the “Rehability View.” This view can account for what is “mental” about mental disorders: it is the rational relations among an individual’s attitudes and actions that are “disordered,” and the relevant norms are the norms of reasons. This view is compatible with explanations of mental disorders in terms of biological dysfunctions, without reducing the former to the latter. The aim is not to offer just another conception of mental disorder, but to develop a systematic approach that incorporates insights from the philosophy of psychiatry and adjacent philosophical disciplines. Philosophy of Mental Disorder will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, ethics, and mental health.
Download or read book Stress in Teachers written by Jack Dunham and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-08-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the stress in teaching multidisciplinary concept broad enough to include physiological, psychological, organisational and legal perspectives. The editors see stress in teaching as an interactionist concept - a complex and sometimes pracarious balance between perceived work pressures, coping strategies and stress reactions. The early chapters in the book refelct this view and make contributions to understanding the causes and costs of stress in teaching. The authors of these chapters come, collectively, to the conclusion that there is an alarmingly low level of job satisfaction in taching and that turnover intentions appear to be on the increase. This pessimistic view is challenged in later chapters by professionals working in the filed of stress management. These contributions highlight the danger of focusing stress research and management. These contributions highlight the danger of focusing stress research and management strategies on the individual rather than the organization, and report the authors' "hands on" knowledge of teacher support teams and workshop and whole-school approaches to diminishing the causes and costs of teacher stress and improving training and career development. The concluding chapters demonstrate the editors belief that useful insights for workers in the education service can be gained fromstudies of workplace stress in other occupations.

Book Synopsis Psychoanalysis and Male Homosexuality by : Kenneth Lewes
Download or read book Psychoanalysis and Male Homosexuality written by Kenneth Lewes and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 2009 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark book is the first and only historical, cultural, and theoretical account of how male homosexuality has been viewed--and frequently misconstrued and distorted--by the psychoanalytic tradition from Freud through the 1980s. In this groundbreaking survey, Kenneth Lewes shows how the original psychoanalytic ideals of understanding and compassion were betrayed by later psychoanalytic clinicians and theorists. Reconsidering Freud and his early followers in a new light, Lewes shows how they posited a model of psychological development that included homosexuality as one of its natural variants. But psychoanalysis, in its later attitudes toward homosexuality, soon changed from an open-minded and humane discipline into an insular and calcified orthodoxy. Exposing the basis of the acrimony and alienation that have characterized relationships between homosexuals and psychoanalysis, Psychoanalysis and Male Homosexuality is a sometimes shocking account of intolerance, hostility, and close mindedness. But it also carefully and fairly documents a parallel story of unexpected sensitivity as it explores the future possibilities--as well as the limits--of psychoanalysis as a humane science. This twentieth anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author, in which he reflects on the changes that have occurred in the past twenty years between the psychoanalytic establishment and people who are homosexual. It also includes two forewords by prominent analysts, Gilbert Cole and Donald Moss, who discuss the personal and historical importance of Lewes's work.

Book Synopsis A Passion for the Impossible by : Mark Dooley
Download or read book A Passion for the Impossible written by Mark Dooley and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the first systematic appraisal of the thought of John D. Caputo, one of America's most respected and controversial continental thinkers, this book brings together internationally renowned philosophers, theologians, and cultural critics. One highlight of the work is an interview with Jacques Derrida in which Derrida talks candidly about his reaction to Caputo's writings and spells out the implications for religion and the question of God after deconstruction. Caputo responds to the concerns expressed by his interlocutors in the same humorous, erudite, and challenging spirit for which he is known. The result is a lively and stimulating debate, covering themes in the philosophy of religion, deconstruction, political philosophy, feminism, and hermeneutics, as well as issues surrounding the work of Aquinas, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Foucault, Derrida, and Rorty.

Book Synopsis Degree Gradation of Verbs by : Jens Fleischhauer-Helfer
Download or read book Degree Gradation of Verbs written by Jens Fleischhauer-Helfer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gradation is usually considered to be a property of adjectives. Examples like 'The boy loves his mother very much' and 'The boy has grown a lot' reveal that gradation is not limited to adjectives but verbs are gradable too. Verb gradation has received considerably less attention in the literature than gradation of adjectives. The aim of the current volume is to explore the notion of verb gradation in more detail. The book presents a semantic as well as a syntactic analysis of verb gradation and combines three case studies with a general perspective on the phenomenon. Issues addressed in the volume cover, among others, the notion of scalarity in the verbal domain, the interaction of verb gradation with grammatical as well as lexical aspect and verb gradation as a subcompositional phenomenon. These topics are investigated from a cross-linguistic perspective. The languages of investigation include, among others, German, Russian and French.

Book Synopsis Interaction Between Mental and Physical Illness by : Rolf Öhman
Download or read book Interaction Between Mental and Physical Illness written by Rolf Öhman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The group of European Medical Research Councils (EMRC) was formed in 1971 and became a Standing Committee of the European Science Foundation (ESF) in 1975. EMRC is an association of medical research councils or equivalent organizations in Western Europe. The National Institutes of Health, the Israel Academy of Sciences, and the European Office of WHO are associated with EMRC and take an active part in its activities. The main aims of EMRC are to exchange information on the research policies pursued by its member organizations and to initiate and stimulate inter national cooperation in biomedical research. Since this research is highly international in itself, EMRC concentrates its activities on furthering international collaboration in those fields where it can play a significant role as a complement of existing channels. Mental illness research has been judged by EMRC to fulfill these criteria. After a survey of the activities of the member organizations in mental illness research, EMRC decided in 1978 to set up a study group to analyze areas where EMRC could contribute. As a result of the work of the study group, five workshops have been arranged to define present knowledge in some specific areas and to delineate research needs. The present volume contains the proceedings of the fifth workshop, held in 1987 and dealing with interactions between mental and physical illness. EMRC hopes that this volume will contribute both to intensified research and to research cooperation on mental illnesses.
