Book excerpt: Gypsies have lived in England since the early sixteenth century, yet considerable confusion and disagreement remain over the precise identity of the group. The question 'Who are the Gypsies?' is still asked and the debates about the positioning and permanence of the boundary between Gypsy and non-Gypsy are contested as fiercely today as at any time before. This study locates these debates in their historical perspective, tracing the origins and reproduction of the various ways of defining and representing the Gypsy from the early sixteenth century to the present day. Starting with a consideration of the early modern description of Gypsies as Egyptians, land pirates and vagabonds, the volume goes on to examine the racial classification of the nineteenth century and the emergence of the ethnic Gypsy in the twentieth century. The book closes with an exploration of the long-lasting image of the group as vagrant and parasitic nuisances which spans the whole period from 1500 to 2000.

Book excerpt: Frames of Protest brings together important empirical research and theoretical essays by leading sociologists, political scientists, and media specialists that focus on social movement frames and framing practices. Frames are new ways of understanding political and social relations that emphasize injustice and the need for change. As such, they are crucial for the development of social movements and protest. Frames of Protest is the only book to focus exclusively on this major research perspective in social movement and protest studies. Thirteen chapters encompass the major themes in the framing perspective to offer a state-of-the-art review. Three chapters present evidence for the determining influence of framing in social movement mobilization. Next, framing activities by the state and the mass media are analyzed. Then, two research reports examine the effect of political opportunities on framing-in Poland under the Communists and in New York City's ethnic politics. Several chapters by leading theorists present a lively debate about the relationship of ideologies to collective action frames. The book closes with a hands-on discussion about analyzing textual materials and interview transcripts to do frame analysis that lends itself to longitudinal and cross-case comparisons.

Book excerpt: The Psychopath: Theory, Research, and Practice is a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in the study of psychopathy. As research into psychopathy over the past two decades has burgeoned, it has had significant implications for clinical practice, with important ethical considerations raised as interest into psychopathy has moved into the real world. This volume is the first comprehensive review of these applied topics. Dr. Robert Hare, a leading authority on the subject, introduces the work by discussing the current state of psychopathy research, highlighting its advancements, potential pitfalls or impediments, and future trajectory. Subsequent chapters give a historical overview of psychopathy, examine measurement issues, etiological theories, and practical considerations. The Psychopath provides a solid foundation from which research and practice into this socially destructive condition can advance into the 21st century. This book will attract academics, researchers, theorists, practitioners, lawyers, judges, law enforcement personnel, students, and other professionals interested in or working with forensic psychology. It also serves as a supplementary text for graduate students enrolled in programs with a specialization in forensic psychology or criminology.
