Nach einer eingehenden Betrachtung der Begrifflichkeiten möchte ich in dieser Arbeit die Diagnostik als Teil der Jugendhilfe darstellen und den Bereich der Hilfen zur Erziehung herausgreifen. Orientieren werde ich mich hierbei schwerpunktmässig an Viola Harnach-Beck und deren Buch „Psychosoziale Diagnostik“. Ferner möchte ich Norbert Höpfner und seine Arbeitsweise am Institut für Pädagogische Diagnostik in Rösrath vorstellen.

Für die vorgelegte Analyse ist der Gegenstandsbereich auf die Kinder- und Jugendhilfe eingegrenzt. Die soziale Diagnostik betrifft die verschiedenen Bereiche der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe - die Hilfe zur Erziehung, den Kinderschutz oder die offene Jugendarbeit. Es ergeben sich gravierende Unterschiede, ob die Arbeitsweise fallspezifisch vom einzelnen Individuum ausgeht, oder fallunspezifisch den Sozialraum betreffen. Dies ist jedoch kein Indiz für die Nutzlosigkeit der sozialen Diagnostik für die fallübergreifende Arbeit.
