However, the work of a new generation of developmental theorists and experimentalists continues to shape important and original lines of thinking and research in France, Canada, and in other French-speaking countries. Scientific concepts are not only embedded in a paradigm, but also in a culture and a language. Instead of writing about Francophone developmental psychology from "outside," this volume brings together original English-language contributions written by researchers working in different Francophone countries. Chapters summarize and interpret research on a given topic, making explicit the context of philosophical and theoretical traditions in which the empirical advances are embedded. Original essays are accompanied by editorial commentaries from eminent scientists working on the same topics in other parts of the world -- topics that are closely related to Francophone streams of thought and themes of study. The special issue of the International Journal of Psychology contains seven papers that treat the origins and development of psychology in most of the regions of the world. It includes countries and regions where psychology has a long history and has attained major status and also developing countries where psychology is more recent and is less well established. It includes papers on countries of European culture and also countries where psychology interacts with the background of Asian and Latin American cultures. The authors of the papers, all well known internationally, are all present or past members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Psychological Science and so are well acquainted with world psychology and psychology in countries besides their own. All of the authors have done research in other countries than their own and so can place the development of psychology in their own regions within the context of world psychology. These contributions show both the common features of psychological science around the world and also the special problems and special opportunities of psychology in different regional and cultural settings.

The chapters cover a range of topics in human and animal experimental psychology. The first section deals with psychobiological processes - the interplay of body and mind in determining intelligence, stress, and pain. The next five chapters address current issues in neuropsychology and neuroscience, including the neural correlates of attention and vision. A third section looks at learning processes in humans and animals, and a fourth deals with a range of topics in perception and cognition.
