A priori hypotheses from the model concerned with human identification of defocused letters as well as identification of rotated letters have been validated with the computer model. Gestalt principles of similarity, proximity, closure, and figure-ground perception as well as geometric illusions are explained in terms of spatial filter bandwidth using the optics homolog. The experimental results have allowed postulates which extend the model by means of another cortical transform and a spatial filter shape which is also psychologically correlated. It is further postulated that the human perceptual space is the image domain from spatially filtered transforms of object forms. It is concluded that the model provides a means of obtaining quantitative psychological correlates of the human visual system. Recommendations are made for additional investigations concerning psychological correlates.

Psychological correlates were obtained by comparing human visual performance to the computer model's performance; the correlation factors were high. Patterns containing Gestalt grouping principles and various visual illusions were presented to the filtered transform model to determine its ability to exhibit them in reconstructed images after low-pass filtering. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed important advancements in our understanding of the psychological underpinnings of subjective properties of visual information, such as aesthetics, memorability, or induced emotions. Concurrently, computational models of objective visual properties such as semantic labelling and geometric relationships have made significant breakthroughs using the latest achievements in machine learning and large-scale data collection. There has also been limited but important work exploiting these breakthroughs to improve computational modelling of subjective visual properties. The time is ripe to explore how advances in both of these fields of study can be mutually enriching and lead to further progress. This book combines perspectives from psychology and machine learning to showcase a new, unified understanding of how images and videos influence high-level visual perception - particularly interestingness, affective values and emotions, aesthetic values, memorability, novelty, complexity, visual composition and stylistic attributes, and creativity. These human-based metrics are interesting for a very broad range of current applications, ranging from content retrieval and search, storytelling, to targeted advertising, education and learning, and content filtering. Work already exists in the literature that studies the psychological aspects of these notions or investigates potential correlations between two or more of these human concepts. Attempts at building computational models capable of predicting such notions can also be found, using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. Nevertheless their performance proves that there is still room for improvement, as the tasks are by nature highly challenging and multifaceted, requiring thought on both the psychological implications of the human concepts, as well as their translation to machines.

The editors termed it a ‘Cognitive Neuropsychological’ approach, because they believed it tried to relate evidence from neurological impairments of visual object processing to models of normal performance in a new and important way. Two broad aims are apparent. One is to test models of normal performance by evaluating how well the models account for the patterns of impairment and preservation of abilities that can occur following brain damage. The other is to use models of normal performance to further their understanding of acquired disorders of visual object processing. These aims distinguish the approach from neuropsychological work whose primary aim is to relate acquired deficits to the sites of damage, and from work in the field of cognitive psychology which attempts only to develop models of normal performance.
