Just as the role of the observer is generally ignored in the formulations of science, so the role of the healer and the healed is ignored in modern medicine. This essay, chapter 14 of Psychic Exploration, examines the role of the healer-healed in 10 basic processes in healing: diagnosis, manual healing, self-healing, chemical agents, anesthesia, surgery, bacteriostasis, action-at-a-distance, the guide, and regeneration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Psychic Exploration, A Challenge for Science* is a primer on psychic research, life’s purpose, and the meaning of the universe. Originally published in 1974, this landmark anthology of nearly thirty chapters on every area of psychic research is finally available again. Edgar D. Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut and moonwalker, as well as a distinguished researcher of the study of human consciousness, brought together eminent scientists to write about issues once considered too controversial to discuss. This book includes fascinating chapters on the history of parapsychology, telepathy, hauntings, psychic phenomena, and consciousness, along with an extensive glossary and index. This timeless anthology continues to be appealing as a reference work for those curious about the history of parapsychology, fans of the world of psi, and readers interested in the meaning of the universe. Contributors include: Willis W. Harman, Jean Houston, Stanley Krippner, Robert Masters, William G. Roll, Russell Targ, Charles T. Tart, Montague Ullman, and many more. “ […] perhaps the most important change [since the initial publication of *Psychic Exploration*] has been due to advancements in quantum physics […] If this trend continues, then the age-old puzzle at the core of religious epiphanies, mystical insight, and creative genius will finally yield to scientific explanations: What is the true nature of consciousness?” —From the New Foreword by Marilyn Schlitz, PhD, and Dean Radin, PhD

Book excerpt: "Mind over matter...the natural over the artificial... these were the unspoken mantras of the proponents of New Thought, the mystical movement at the turn of the 20th century.... One of the most influential thinkers of this early "New Age" philosophy promises here, in this 1909 book, to show the reader how to 'spread the glad tidings of Health and Strength' by using the body's Prana, or Vital Force; by direct control of the body's cells via the mind, or mental healing; and by calling the light of 'higher thought' down on the body, or spiritual healing"--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Science of Psychic Healing (Unabridged)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This book is intended to be a practical presentation of the various forms of Psychic Healing. Very little about theory—although giving a general outline of the underlying theories that the healer may understand the nature of the work he is doing—and have tried to make the book tell "how” to do the work. In introducing the subject we wish to say that we have not tried to make a religion of Psychic Healing, for this seems a folly to us. We do not see why Psychic Healing should be made into a religion, any more than should Drug Healing, Massage, Osteopathy, or any other form of healing. All true healing results from an application of perfectly natural laws, and the power employed is as much a natural law as is electricity. For that matter, all natural laws are of "divine” religion, and are equally worthy of respect and reverence. William Walker Atkinson (Yogi Ramacharaka) (1862-1932) was a prolific writer. His works treat themes related to the mental world, occultism, divination, psychic reality, and mankind's nature. They constitute a basis for what Atkinson called "New Psychology" or "New Thought".

Book excerpt: As noted psychiatrists, authors, and lecturers, Baars and Terruwe excitingly blend medieval and classical notions of the human psyche together with modern clinical discoveries as they probe the topic of psychic wholeness and healing. The authors explore the entire human psyche, including man's spiritual dimension, which is an area totally ignored by most modern psychiatrists--creating in modern man an ever-deepening sense of frustration in searching for effective psychiatric treatment for his emotional turmoil. The books' numerous detailed clinical case histories clarify the authors' therapeutic principles. The following questions, among many others, are considered in this work: How best to help a person who lives in constant fear that he has committed a serious sin even though he knows he has not? Does a person who wants to live a moral life, yet cannot refrain from doing things that he knows are immoral, suffer from weakness of willpower or from a neurosis that would lend itself to therapy?

It requires a good deal of boldness to insist on affirming, in the name of positive science, the POSSIBILITY of these phenomena (wrongly styled supernatural), and to constitute one's self the champion of a cause apparently ridiculous, absurd, and dangerous, knowing, at the same time, that the avowed adherents of said cause have little standing in science, and that even its eminent partisans only venture to speak of their approval of it with bated breath. However, since the matter has just been treated momentarily in fugitive writings by a group of journalists whose exacting labors wholly forbid a study of the psychic and physical forces; and since, of all this multitude of writers, the greater part have only heaped error upon error, puerility upon extravagance; and since it appears from every page they have written (I hope they will pardon me) that not only are they ignorant of the very a, b, c of the subject they have so fantastically treated, but their opinions upon this class of facts rest upon no basis whatever,—therefore I have thought it would serve a purpose if I should leave, as a souvenir of the long wrangle, a piece of writing better based and buttressed than the lucubrations of the above-mentioned gentlemen. As a lover of truth, I am willing to face a thousand reproaches. Be it distinctly understood that I do not for a moment deem my judgment superior to that of my confrères, some of whom are in other respects highly gifted. The simple fact is that they are not familiar with this subject, but are straying in it at random, wandering through a strange region. They misunderstand the very terminology, and imagine that facts long ago well authenticated are impossible. By way of contrast, the writer of these lines will state that for several years he has been engaged in discussions and experiments upon the subject. (I am not speaking of historical studies.) "Moreover, although the old saw would have us believe that 'it is not always desirable to state the truth,' yet, to speak frankly, I am so indignant at the overweening presumption of certain polemical opponents, and at the gall they have injected into the debate, that I do not hesitate to rise and point out to the deceived public that, without a single exception, all the arguments brought up by these writers, and upon which they have boldly planted their banner of victory, prove absolutely nothing, NOTHING, against the possible truth of the things which they, in the fury of their denial, have so perverted. Such a snarl of opinions must be analyzed. In brief, the true must be disentangled from the false. Veritas, veritas!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic handbook of parapsychology, ESP, and the world of psychic phenomena by the world-renowned authority on this intriguing subject. What is parapsychology? What are the explanations for extrasensory perception? Hans Holzer has compiled this definitive survey of parapsychology for the layman based on lectures he delivered at the New York Institute of Technology. Professor Holzer traces the history and development of parapsychology from the Stone Age to the present and explains the terminology, various forms and basic techniques of ESP. He reveals how the layman can develop his own extrasensory perception in a comparatively short time and learn to obtain significant information through various techniques involving psychometry (touch-identification of objects, trances, etc.). The unique methods described here were developed by Professor Holzer. His psycho-ecstasy technique (PSE) to reach a “high” state makes using drugs and stimulants unnecessary.

Book excerpt: Telepathy is one manifestation of the collective phenomena that parapsychologists refer to as ESP. It involves information received by a subject (percipient, recipient, or receiver) from an agent (transmitter or sender), apparently through some type of "mind-to-mind" contact. The role of telepathy in affecting human behavior needs further exploration, as it may be more influential than is commonly suspected.
