Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers ways to resolve the imbalance between the demand and supply of mental health services. Treatment services in most countries reach only a minority of people identified as suffering from a mental disorder. Few countries can provide adequate health services for all the mentally ill, yet none has developed a rational system to decide who should be treated. The questions are clear. Could we develop a staged treatment process to reach all in need? If not, how do we decide who to treat? What should the criteria be for deployment of scarce treatment resources? How do we determine such criteria? What are the ethical implications of applying such criteria? In this pioneering work, an international team of eminent psychiatrists, epidemiologists, health administrators, economists and health planners examine these questions. The result will inform and encourage all concerned with the equitable provision of mental health care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curing Mental Illness is the results from the research completed by the author for the Canadian Space Agency's Predictive Medicine Program in cooperation with the Russian Cosmonauts in 2012 and 2013 to determine if the author could use his company's technology to predict which astronauts in training would become mentally ill on a deep space mission lasting several years. An edited copy by the CSA of the results of the author's research were published at the 2013 IEEE/AIAA Aerospace Conference held in Big Sky Montana for the CSA's Predictive Medicine Program personnel and subsequently the full results were submitted to NASA Headquarters in 2013 and published on-line for public access in the American Journal of Applied Psychology. Curing Mental Illness provides a complete program for acquiring emotional and mental illnesses as well as recovering from emotional and mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, through bi-polar or schizophrenia. The author includes the description of why and how these are acquired by people and how they are nothing more than our own body's defensive process trying to get us safe and keep us safe from our own life threatening decisions and lifestyle. Curing Mental Illness includes two massive reference sections and excerpts in the body of the text from members of the existing and past mental health community members and their professional opinions that the author has refuted with his own research results at the beginning of the book. The author also includes both the authors results to answers to common questions left unanswered by the current mental health community and many sections of current inadequate material published about emotional and mental disorders for comparing with the authors results. The author hopes this book will initiate a new direction in developing faster recovery programs that are quicker than the one proposed by the author as well as a new effort for pharmaceutical companies to develop the drugs to suppress our fight-or-flight response (FOFR) that the author has illustrated is the root cause of both emotional and mental disorders as well as all non-genetic based disorders, diseases and illnesses.

Book excerpt: A new patient-centered approach to psychiatry that aims to resolve the field's conceptual tension between science and humanism by drawing on classical American pragmatism and contemporary pragmatic bioethics. Psychiatry today is torn by opposing sensibilities. Is it primarily a science of brain functioning or primarily an art of understanding the human mind in its social and cultural context? Competing conceptions of mental illness as amenable to scientific explanation or as deeply complex and beyond the reach of empirical study have left the field conceptually divided between science and humanism. In Healing Psychiatry David Brendel takes a novel approach to this stubborn problem. Drawing on the classical American pragmatism of Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, as well as contemporary work of pragmatic bioethicists, Brendel proposes a "clinical pragmatism" that synthesizes scientific and humanistic approaches to mental health care. Psychiatry, he argues, must integrate scientific and humanistic models by emphasizing the practical, pluralistic, participatory, and provisional aspects of clinical diagnosis and treatment. Psychiatrists need to have the skill and flexibility to use scientific and humanistic approaches in a collaborative, open-ended clinical process; they must recognize the complexity of human suffering even as they strive for scientific rigor. This is the only way, he writes, that psychiatry can heal its conceptual rift and the emotional wounds of its patients. Healing Psychiatry explores these issues from both clinical and theoretical standpoints and uses case histories to support its basic argument. Brendel calls for an open-minded and flexible yet scientifically informed approach to understanding, diagnosing, and treating mental disorders. And he considers the future of psychiatry, applying the principles of clinical pragmatism to a broad range of ethical concerns in psychiatric training and research.

The book brings together contributions from lawyers, philosophers, psychiatrists and clinical managers to explore the inter-related conceptual and political implications of Psychopathy. Philosophy, Psychiatry and Psychopathy will appeal to those with an interest in the history and development of theories and research relating to philosophy and psychiatry.

Book excerpt: Each year, more than 33 million Americans receive health care for mental or substance-use conditions, or both. Together, mental and substance-use illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability for women, the highest for men ages 15-44, and the second highest for all men. Effective treatments exist, but services are frequently fragmented and, as with general health care, there are barriers that prevent many from receiving these treatments as designed or at all. The consequences of this are seriousâ€"for these individuals and their families; their employers and the workforce; for the nation's economy; as well as the education, welfare, and justice systems. Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions examines the distinctive characteristics of health care for mental and substance-use conditions, including payment, benefit coverage, and regulatory issues, as well as health care organization and delivery issues. This new volume in the Quality Chasm series puts forth an agenda for improving the quality of this care based on this analysis. Patients and their families, primary health care providers, specialty mental health and substance-use treatment providers, health care organizations, health plans, purchasers of group health care, and all involved in health care for mental and substanceâ€"use conditions will benefit from this guide to achieving better care.
