Download or read book The Psalms written by Samuel L. Terrien and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monumental work, his most ambitious undertaking, the late Samuel Terrien brings together a lifetime of scholarship on Psalms, long the wellspring of Jewish spirituality as well as the main hymnal of the Christian church. The book's insightful and clearly written introduction treats such subjects as the longevity and ecumenicity of the psalms, their Near Eastern background, the Hebrew text and ancient versions, their music, their strophic structure, their literary genre, their theology, and their relation to the New Testament. In the commentary itself Terrien freshly elucidates the theological significance of these collected poems by putting readers in touch with the formal versatility and religious passion of the psalmists themselves. While Terrien always engages in scientific exegesis before drawing theological conclusions, he is careful to allow full expression to the theological -- and, especially, the doxological -- voice of these unmatched spiritual songs. The result is a commentary that provides a link between the archaic language of Psalms and the intellectual demands of modern thinking and spirituality. Throughout his exposition Terrien shows great respect for the scribal testimony of the Jewish tradition, especially the consonants of the Masoretic text. He likewise displays great care in finding the most accurate meaning for Hebrew words of obscure origin. This meticulous work renders a translation of Psalms more reliable than those of Terrien's predecessors. He also draws on many fruitful gains of structural analysis in discerning the strophic divisions within the Hebrew text. Often he finds unity of composition where earlier critics denied it. And for readersinterested in specific aspects of translation and interpretation, Terrien has appended bibliographical lists of modern works on each psalm.
Download or read book The Psalms written by Leopold Sabourin SJ and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psalms--the prayers of the chosen people, the prayers of the people of God--have a spontaneity and timeless pertinence which is unique. They are an integral part of Christian liturgies; yet they pose difficulties for many who sense that they have sprung from a cultural milieu which is totally alien to our own. This problem can only be solved by a careful study of their origins, their literary structures, their content, and their intent. A vast literature has grown up around the psalter. But modern biblical discoveries, research, and scholarship have opened the way to a greater understanding and finer appreciation of the inspired prayers. The author, one of the leading exegetes of our time, has produced a monumental and comprehensive work which reflects his vast research and erudite judgment. The scholar and the biblical student will find this thorough treatment invaluable. And educated men of all religions, who share a common invaluable scriptural tradition, should also find it essentially helpful and enlightening. This many-faceted work clearly illustrates that biblical scholarship knows no denominational boundaries. The psalter is a bridge of prayer in this ecumenical age, and readers will find the author's insights and analyses most helpful in making the psalms more vital in their lives and a more unifying bond in man's search for God in our time.

Book Synopsis Seeing and Hearing God with the Psalms by : Raymond Jacques Tournay
Download or read book Seeing and Hearing God with the Psalms written by Raymond Jacques Tournay and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1991-07-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation into the prophetic dimension of the Psalms shows how the postexilic period and especially the world of the Chronicler around 300 BCE provide the main setting for the Psalms, even royal psalms. The Levitical singers of the Second Temple 'made up for the silence of the classical prophets': an idealized David, musician and prophet, is depicted as leader of the cultic prophets and of the entire inspired community. In this way theophanic descriptions and oracular material in the style of the classical prophets were developed and preserved through the Psalms.

Book Synopsis Authoritative Scriptures in Ancient Judaism by : Mladen Popović
Download or read book Authoritative Scriptures in Ancient Judaism written by Mladen Popović and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars of the Second Temple period have replaced the concept of canonization by that of canonical process. Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls has been crucial for this new direction. Based on this new evidence taxonomic terms like biblical, nonbiblical or parabiblical seem anachronistic for the period before 70 C.E. The notion of authoritative Scriptures plays an important part in the new paradigm of canonical process, but it has not yet been sufficiently reflected upon and is in need of clarification. Why were some texts more authoritative than others? For whom and in what contexts were texts authoritative? And what are our criteria to determine to what extent a text was authoritative? In short, what do we mean by “authoritative”? This volume focuses on specific texts or corpora of texts, and approaches the notion of authoritative Scriptures from sociological, cultural and literary perspectives.
Book Synopsis Psalms 101–150 by : Abraham Kuruvilla
Download or read book Psalms 101–150 written by Abraham Kuruvilla and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume commentary on the Psalms engages hermeneutics for preaching, employing theological exegesis that enables the preacher to utilize all the psalms in the Psalter to craft effective sermons. It unpacks the crucial link between Scripture and application: the theology of each preaching text/psalm--what the author is doing with what he is saying in each psalm--is explored and explicated. While the primary goal of the commentary is to take the preacher from text to theology, it also provides a sermon outline for each of the preaching units in the Psalms. The unique approach of this work results in a theology-for-preaching commentary that promises to be useful for anyone teaching from the Psalter with an emphasis on application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Producing Christian Culture takes as its thread the 'interpretative genres' within which medieval people engaged with the Bible. Contributors to the volume present specific material as a case study illustrative of a specific genre, whether devotional, homiletical, scholarly, or controversial. The chronological range moves from St Augustine to the use of gospel texts in polemical writing of the first two decades of the 1500s, with focal sections on early medieval Anglo-Saxon and Carolingian theology, the scholastic turn of the High Middle Ages, and the influence of vernacular writing in the later Middle Ages. The tremendous range and vitality of medieval responses to biblical texts are highlighted within the studies.
