Book excerpt: Psalms or Psalter? This study creates a new, solid foundation for discussions on the psalm manuscripts found in the Judean Desert. A variety of explanatory models, statistics and synthetic hypotheses have already been produced in the course of numerous analyses and interpretations. However, the disparate and fragmentary character of the manuscripts has barely received any attention since the main focus has mostly been on discussions of the content. For the first time, the entire preserved fragment material of the psalm manuscripts from the Judean Desert is here being presented and edited as a whole. In this way, it can be defined and analyzed in future studies. New ways of exploring the contents will particularly result with regard to the best preserved psalm roll, 11QPs a.

Book Synopsis A Theological Introduction to the Book of Psalms by : Prof. J. Clinton McCann JR.
Download or read book A Theological Introduction to the Book of Psalms written by Prof. J. Clinton McCann JR. and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking his point of departure from the newest frontier of research, McCann reads the psalms in the context of their final shape and canonical form. He interprets the psalms as scripture as well as in their character as songs, prayers, and poetry from Israel's history. McCann's intent is to contribute to the church's recovery of the psalms as torah--as instruction, as a guide to prayer, praise of God, and pious living. The explicit connections which McCann draws from the psalms to the New Testament and to Christian faith and life are extensive, making his work suitable for serious study of the psalms in academic and in church settings. An appendix examines the tradition of singing the psalms and offers suggestions for the use of the psalms in worship.
Book Synopsis Dead Sea Psalms Scrolls and the Book of Psalms by : Peter W. Flint
Download or read book Dead Sea Psalms Scrolls and the Book of Psalms written by Peter W. Flint and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Psalms are found in no less than thirty-nine manuscripts. This groundbreaking volume presents the first comprehensive study of these scrolls, by making available a wealth of primary data and investigating the main issues that arise. The first part provides information which many scholars will find enormously helpful, such as descriptions of the manuscripts, listings of variant readings, a synopsis of superscriptions, and indices of contents of all the Psalms scrolls. The second part investigates the issues, some of which are relevant to the Book of Psalms itself (e.g. stabilization in two distinct stages), while others focus upon 11QPsa, the largest Psalms scroll (e.g. part of an edition of the Book of Psalms), and one involves the relation of these manuscripts to the Septuagint Psalter.
Book Synopsis The Message of the Psalter by : David C. Mitchell
Download or read book The Message of the Psalter written by David C. Mitchell and published by Campbell Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's really going on in the Psalms? Is it just an anthology of old Israelite songs? Or is there more to it than anyone ever guessed? This evergreen classic is the book that first proposed, in 1997, a messianic metanarrative in the Psalms. It explains how someone arranged the Psalms to outline a program of future events like in Zechariah 9-14. There is an appendix of apocalyptic midrashim, translated into English for the first time. A bridegroom-Messiah gathers exiled Israel. He sets up a kingdom, but dies a violent death. Israel are scattered in the wilderness of the nations. Then they are gathered again in troublous times. Finally, they are rescued by a king from the heavens. He sets his throne on Zion and receives the homage of the nations. 160,000 words. Read all about it!
Book Synopsis The Conflict Between Faith and Experience, and the Shape of Psalms 73–83 by : Stephen J. Smith
Download or read book The Conflict Between Faith and Experience, and the Shape of Psalms 73–83 written by Stephen J. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen J. Smith enters the lively field of editorial-criticism of the Hebrew Psalter or Psalterexegese with this detailed investigation into the final form of Psalms 73-83. In the book, he engages scholarly disagreements over this collection's structure, the degree and nature of its literary unity, and the primary theological message(s) it communicates. Smith argues that the sequence of Psalms 73–82 - and possibly 83 – has a deliberate design that reflects a sustained focus on addressing, and resolving, a multidimensional collision between “faith” (i.e., core Israelite beliefs about God) and “experience” (i.e., the individual/community's lived experience of God) that was precipitated by God's prolonged absence in the Temple's destruction (c. 586/587 BCE). Parting ways with previous scholarship, Smith contends that a recursive organizing principle rooted in biblical parallelism structures the collection. Over the book's nine chapters, he makes the case that the editor(s) grouped its psalms into two major blocks (74-78; 79-82) of two sub-groupings each (74-76, 77-78; 79/82, 80-81) in order to develop a single topic in multiple dimensions: the severe threat that God's prolonged absence in the temple's destruction posed to the ongoing viability of various core Israelite beliefs about God, most fundamentally God's goodness. Smith makes the case that the collection is shaped to resolve this crisis by bolstering the reader's confidence in, and commitment to, these beliefs in the face of their apparent failure.

Book Synopsis Reading the Psalms as a Book by : R. Norman Whybray
Download or read book Reading the Psalms as a Book written by R. Norman Whybray and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1996-01-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the theory that the Psalter was compiled with the specific intention that it should be used as a book for private spiritual reading. It is argued that if this were so, the work of the final editors would not have been confined to arranging the psalms in a particular order but would have included additions and interpolations intended to give the whole book a new orientation. An investigation of selected psalms shows that although the Psalter may have become a book for private devotion not long after its compilation, there is little evidence that it was compiled for that purpose.
