Book Synopsis Lucky's Way by : Brenda Boemer-Groenestege
Download or read book Lucky's Way written by Brenda Boemer-Groenestege and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part dog-training guide, Lucky’s Way offers practical, straightforward advice for training dogs alongside stories from the author’s life and the many dogs who have been part of it. With humour and candour, Brenda Boemer-Groenestege provides down-to-earth guidelines on everything from choosing the right dog to obedience and therapy training, providing readers the resources to train a well-behaved pet or even a therapy dog and get results quickly. The stories and advice in Lucky’s Way are forthright, honest, and at times humorously irreverent, ranging from descriptions of ideal service dog attributes to personal anecdotes to descriptions of the author’s current giant-breed dog therapy team, accompanied by family pictures. Dog owners owe it to their dogs to be the incredible people their dogs think they are; Lucky’s Way shows readers how to make every day a happy, memorable time with their (mostly) well-behaved best friends.

Book excerpt: It might be hard to believe, but there was a time before TVs, computers, iPhones, and iPads. You may think that at worst this sounds unbelievable, and that at best it seems boring—so what did kids do to occupy their time? In The Journey, author Graham Tyner shares what it was like growing up in the forties and fifties—and across nine thousand miles—in America, a time when the nation’s spirits were high and when kids went outside to play! As a tribute to his children and grandchildren, Tyner offers a family history before providing a window into what a wonderful time it was to be a kid in our glorious country when he was growing up. He also chronicles his adventures acrossAmerica, where he moved eleven times and traveled a combined nine thousand miles while attending ten different schools. With so many gadgets and distractions, it is all too easy to lose the importance of these simple but remarkable times. Yet this period was a wonderful time to be a kid, and even today, its lessons can offer the next generation a model for the future.

Book Synopsis A Private Family Matter by : Victor Rivas Rivers
Download or read book A Private Family Matter written by Victor Rivas Rivers and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-04-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a story about how I was saved by love at a time when most people considered me beyond rescue," begins Victor Rivas Rivers in this powerful chronicle of how he escaped the war zone of domestic violence -- too often regarded as a "private family matter" -- and went on to become a good man, a film star, and a prominent activist. The Cuban-born author begins by recalling when he was kidnapped, along with three of his siblings, by his own father, who abandoned Victor's pregnant mother and took the children on a cross-country hell-ride that nearly ended in a fatal collision. This journey of survival portrays with riveting detail how, instead of becoming a madman like his father, Victor was saved by a band of mortal angels. Miraculously, seven families stepped forward, along with teachers and coaches, to empower him on his road from gang member to class president, through harrowing and hilarious football adventures at Florida State and with the Miami Dolphins, to overcoming the Hollywood odds and becoming a champion for all those impacted by domestic violence. Though at times Victor's odyssey is heartbreaking and disturbing, A Private Family Matter is ultimately a triumphant testament to humanity, courage, and love. Profound and poignant, it is a compelling memoir with a cause. Victor Rivers's way of thanking all the angels and advocates who made a difference in his life is by trying to make a difference in all of ours.

Book excerpt: Camisha Broussard's author debut, "Daddy Issues," offers a sometimes amusing, all-the-time hopeful, and eventual loving look at a dysfunctional parent-child relationship through the eyes of a fatherless daughter. Taking an atypical approach to the normal daughterless perspective, Camisha forces herself to reflect on the good things about her alcoholic father, humanizing him to the point of being more empathetic of the man he was, rather than remorseful of his shortcomings as the dad she wished him to be. From troubled teen to college professor, wife, and mother of four, Camisha's approach to the average fatherless daughter relationship is anything but stereotypical and is a profoundly holistic look at real life with real people who have real problems. From colorism to alcoholism, "Daddy Issues," promises readers a rollercoaster ride filled with every emotion imaginable reaching a final destination of forgiveness, hope, and finally love.

Book Synopsis Back on the Farm by : Harold W. Sullivan
Download or read book Back on the Farm written by Harold W. Sullivan and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back on the Farm is a collection of 176 humorous stories Harold Sullivan wrote for his grandchildren about growing up on a farm in Comet, West Virginia, during the '30s and '40s. The moments that were the basis of the stories were frozen in time for the author, and his fond retelling--"When I was a boy, back on the farm"--recreates that life in the reader's mind too. His stories are of small triumphs, giant failures, and a few in between. They are funny tales of his relationship with his younger sister, whom as one story recounts, he convinced to let him shoot her with a homemade BB gun. This sister then pretended it didn't hurt so she would shoot him too! Many of the stories are about his hardworking mother, such as the time Harold and his sister made mud pies with eggs from the farm (a huge financial loss in the Depression) and Momma spanked them twice--once for the act and again when she found they had taken all the eggs. The hero of many of his stories was his father, a "big man" in many ways, whose battle with the "pushy cow" showed the personality of the man--and of the cow. Harold's stories are of a way of life that doesn't exist anymore in the tiny community of Comet, West Virginia, which doesn't exist anymore either. But for the people who lived there, or for anyone who has lived on a farm, the tales from Harold's memory bring back a simpler time worth revisiting. These stories, of a boy growing up among hardworking and close-knit family and community, are a love song to life, Back on the Farm.

Regrettable choices that included abortion and a broken marriage resulted in a downward spiral of hopelessness, shame, depression, and attempted suicide. Even the fame and potential fortune of her #1 hit on the Country Music charts left her empty and searching. Download or read book Snapshots of My Father, John Silber written by Rachel Devlin and published by Peter E. Randall Publisher. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who knew him, Silber was a genuinely unforgettable character. And as his daughter’s memoir attests, the man who was so fascinating as a public figure was no less compelling and memorable behind the scenes . . . a captivating memoir. - The Boston Globe/Jeff Jacoby This is an extensively illustrated memoir of John Silber, who entirely transformed Boston University as its president and was a controversial, yet intellectually formidable, candidate for governor of Massachusetts. Here, Rachel Devlin looks at her family and her father's trajectory from Texas to Boston and what life became like there; she examines his personality and temperament; and she describes his later years, the hardships he weathered and his continued accomplishments out of the public eye. As the title implies, each chapter is like a snapshot taken from a daughter's perspective, peering into the past she saw. Silber championed freedom of speech, believing all sides should be heard, especially on college campuses. He was also the father of seven children. The author often meets people who want to hear what he was like as a father and to tell her their own stories about him. Here is her clear-eyed vision of this authentic man of principle who had a drive to achieve great things.
