Book excerpt: Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a rapidly growing analytical technique for detecting and identifying very small quantities of chemical compounds in air. It has seen widespread use in atmospheric monitoring and food science and shows increasing promise in applications such as industrial process monitoring, medical science and in crime and security scenarios. Written by leading researchers, this is the first book devoted to PTR-MS and it provides a comprehensive account of the basic principles, the experimental technique and various applications, thus making this book essential reading for researchers, technicians, postgraduate students and professionals in industry. The book contains nine chapters and is divided into two parts. The first part describes the underlying principles of the PTR-MS technique, including • the relevant ion-molecule chemistry • thermodynamics and reaction kinetics • a discussion of ion sources, drift tubes and mass spectrometers • practical aspects of PTR-MS, including calibration. The second part of the book turns its attention to some of the many applications of PTR-MS, demonstrating the scope and benefits, as well as the limitations, of the technique. The chapters that make up the second part of the book build upon the material presented in the first part and are essentially self-contained reviews focusing on the following topics: • environmental science • food science • medicine • homeland security, and • applications of PTR-MS in liquid analysis.

Book Synopsis Proton Transfer in Hydrogen-Bonded Systems by : T. Bountis
Download or read book Proton Transfer in Hydrogen-Bonded Systems written by T. Bountis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charge transport through the transfer of protons between molecules has long been recognized as a fundamental process, which plays an important role in many chemical reactions. In particular, proton transfer through Hydrogen (H-) bonds has been identified as the main mechanism, via which many bio logical functions are performed and many properties of such basic substances as proteins and ice can be understood. In this volume, several of these important aspects of the H-bond are rep resented. As the division in different sections already indicates, present day research in proton teansfer in biochemistry, biology, and the physics of water and ice remains highly active and very exciting. Nearly a decade ago, a novel approach to the study of collective proton motion in H-bonded systems was proposed, in which this phenomenon was explained by the propagation of certain coherent structures called solitons. In the years that followed, the approach ofsoliton dynamics was further extended and developed by many researchers around the world, into a legitimate and useful method for the analysis of proton transfer in H-bonded systems. Dr. Stephanos Pnevmatikos, the original Director of this ARW, was one of the pioneers in the application ofsoliton ideas to the study ofcharge transport through H-bonds. Having used similar concepts himself in his research on 2D lattices) he was convinced energy transfer through molecular chains (and that solitons can play an important role in enhancing our understanding of protonic conductivity.

Book Synopsis The Proton in Chemistry by : R.P. Bell
Download or read book The Proton in Chemistry written by R.P. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was based on the lectures which I gave at Cornell University during 1958 as George Fisher Baker Lecturer, and I would like to repeat my warmest thanks to Professor F. A. Long and the other members of the Department of Chemistry for their kindness and helpful advice. The present edition was largely written during the tenure of a Visiting Professorship awarded by the Royal Society and the Israeli Academy of Sciences. I am deeply indebted to both of these bodies and also to the hospitality of the Weizmann Institute of Science, in particular to Professor David Samuel and Professor F. S. Klein of the Isotopes Research Department. The subject as a whole has expanded greatly since 1959, especially in two fields, namely, the direct study of fast proton-transfer reactions (notably by the relaxation methods pioneered by Eigen), and the experi mental and theoretical study of hydrogen isotope effects. In order to keep the size of the book within reasonable bounds it has been necessary to adopt a selective policy, and this is particularly the case in Chapter 9 where I have chosen to treat a few types of reaction in some detail rather than to attempt a more complete coverage.

Book Synopsis Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer by : Sebastiao Formosinho
Download or read book Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer written by Sebastiao Formosinho and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is emerging as an important new class of reactions and, over the past decade, great strides have been made in our understanding of them. PCET reactions are studied in many branches of chemistry and are omnipresent in biological processes. This book covers recent developments from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. It concentrates on the importance of PCET in biological systems and for bioenergetic conversion. The oxidation of water in Photosystem II to produce oxygen, and the reduction of protons to hydrogen by hydrogenase, for energy storage gets particular emphasis. Chemical reactivity is currently explained in terms of several scientific principles. One of them is the bond-breaking-bond-forming process and is conceptually based on potential energy surfaces. Another incorporates the role of Franck-Condon factors resulting from the overlap of vibrational wavefunctions. A third, the so-called solvent reorganization, involves solvent configuration around a charged species. PCET brings together such concepts and links them to quantum mechanical tunnelling of the electron particle. This book uses personal accounts of experimental examples to provide additional insight on this important topic. It starts by presenting a general overview of the main theoretical approaches and experimental applications. The chapters then go on to cover topics including: the application of the Marcus Cross Relation; the solvation of ionic systems; experimental approaches in biological redox systems; metal ion-coupled electron transfer, and electrochemical concerted proton-electron transfers.
Book Synopsis Electron Transfer Reactions in Organic Chemistry by : Lennart Eberson
Download or read book Electron Transfer Reactions in Organic Chemistry written by Lennart Eberson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of the book is electron transfer reactions in organic chemistry, with the emphasis on mechanistic aspects. The theoretical framework is that of the Marcus theory, well-known from its extensive use in inorganic chemistry. The book deals with definitions of electron transfer, theory of electron transfer reactions (Marcus' and Pross-Shaik's approach) experimental diagnosis of electron transfer reactions, examples from inorganic/organic reactants and purely organic reactants, electro- and photochemical electron transfer, electron transfer catalyzed reactions, connections between electron transfer and polar mechanisms, and applications of electron transfer, such as electrosynthesis of organic chemicals, photochemical energy storage, conducting organic materials and chemiluminescence. The approach is new in so far as no comparable book has been published. The book will be of value to anyone interested in keeping track of developments in physical organic chemistry.
Book Synopsis Electron and Proton Transfer in Chemistry and Biology by : Achim Müller
Download or read book Electron and Proton Transfer in Chemistry and Biology written by Achim Müller and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various aspects of electron and proton transfer in chemistry and biology are described in this volume. The joint presentation was chosen for two reasons. Rapid electron and proton transfer govern cellular energetics in both the most primitive and higher organisms with photosynthetic and heterotrophic lifestyles. Further, biology has become the area where the various disciplines of science, which were previously diversified, are once again converging. The book begins with a survey of physicochemical principles of electron transfer in the gas and solid phase, with thermodynamic and photochemical driving force. Inner and outer sphere mechanisms and the coupling of electron transfer to nuclear rearrangements are reviewed. These principles are applied to construct artificial photosynthesis, leading to biological electron transfer involving proteins with transition metal and/or organic redox centres. The tuning of the free energy profile on the reaction trajectory through the protein by single amino acids or by the larger ensemble that determines the electrostatic properties of the reaction path is one major issue.Another one is the transformation of one-electron to paired-electron steps with protection against hazardous radical intermediates. The diversity of electron transport systems is represented in various chapters with emphasis on photosynthesis, respiration and nitrogenases. The book will be of interest to scientists in chemistry, physics and the life sciences.
