This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers and reports presented at the First International Conference on Dye-Protein Interaction, held 24-28 July 1988 at the University of Compiegne, France. This was the first international meeting dealing entirely with dye-protein interaction. The major focus of the conference was on the better understanding of the mechanism of interaction of proteins with different triazine dyes and the synthesis of novel structural dyes having good biomimetic activities. The potentials and limits of their use in biotechnology, mainly for purification, were stressed. Current contributions in developing dye-based affinity methods were highlighted in such areas as affinity partition, affinity precipitation and new support matrices for efficient affinity chromatography, etc. The interrelation between metal chelates and dyes in terms of their interactions with proteins was underlined. It is our belief that this proceedings volume will be a stimulus for broad and creative applications of dye affinity concepts in many fields of biomedical research and biotechnology. for understanding the In addition, a discussion session emphasised the necessity toxicological aspects of these dyes, their fragments and their metabolites. This helped to trigger plans for future work, and this topic will be one of the priorities in a future meeting on dye-protein interactions. C. R. The help of the International Scientific Committee, which included Drs Lowe (UK), G. KopperschHiger (GDR) , E. Stellwagen (USA), D. Thomas (France), G. Birkenmeier (GDR), S. Rajgopal-Narayan (USA), J. P. Dandeu (France), D. Muller (France) and E. Dellacherie (France), in organising this meeting is gratefully acknowledged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are today five major proteins in plasma fractioning. In the near future, other fractions could also be used as therapeutic agents. But perhaps they could be used for alternative, non-therapeutic applications? For example, producing human culture media with specific ingredients for biotechnology research might also be of use. Whatever the future may hold, there is one essential question: in today's world of cellular and genetic engineering, are extracted therapeutic proteins still of any relevance? For a clear and up-to-date view of recent developments in blood-protein-separation technology, this book will prove an invaluable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book came from discussions among participants in a symposium on biotechnical applications at the "Pacifichem 89" meeting in Honolulu. It was the majority opinion of this group that a volume dedicated to biotechnical and biomedical applications of PEG chemistry would enhance research and development in this area. Though the book was conceived at the Honolulu meeting, it is not a proceedings of this symposium. Several groups who did not participate in this meeting are repre sented in the book, and the book incorporates much work done after the meeting. The book does not include contributions in all related areas to which PEG chemistry has been applied. Several invited researchers declined to parti.:ipate, and there is not enough space in this single volume to properly cover all submissions. Chapter I-an overview of the topic-discusses in brief applications not given detailed coverage in specifically devoted chapters. The following topics are covered: introduction to and fundamental properties of PEG and derivatives in Chapters 1-3; separations using aqueous polymer two-phase partitioning in Chapters 4-6; PEG-proteins as catalysts in biotechnical applications in Chapters 7 and 8; biomedical applications of PEG-proteins in Chapters 9-13; PEG modified surfaces for a variety of biomedical and biotechnical applications in Chapters 14-20; and synthesis of new PEG derivatives in Chapters 21 and 22.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores new applications emerging from our latest understanding of proteins in solution and at interfaces Proteins in solution and at interfaces increasingly serve as the starting point for exciting new applications, from biomimetic materials to nanoparticle patterning. This book surveys the state of the science in the field, offering investigators a current understanding of the characteristics of proteins in solution and at interfaces as well as the techniques used to study these characteristics. Moreover, the authors explore many of the new and emerging applications that have resulted from the most recent studies. Topics include protein and protein aggregate structure; computational and experimental techniques to study protein structure, aggregation, and adsorption; proteins in non-standard conditions; and applications in biotechnology. Proteins in Solution and at Interfaces is divided into two parts: Part One introduces concepts as well as theoretical and experimental techniques that are used to study protein systems, including X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, small angle scattering, and spectroscopic methods Part Two examines current and emerging applications, including nanomaterials, natural fibrous proteins, and biomolecular thermodynamics The book's twenty-three chapters have been contributed by leading experts in the field. These contributions are based on a thorough review of the latest peer-reviewed findings as well as the authors' own research experience. Chapters begin with a discussion of core concepts and then gradually build in complexity, concluding with a forecast of future developments. Readers will not only gain a current understanding of proteins in solution and at interfaces, but also will discover how theoretical and technical developments in the field can be translated into new applications in material design, genetic engineering, personalized medicine, drug delivery, biosensors, and biotechnology.

Book excerpt: This book can be used to provide insight into this important application of biophysics for those who are planning a career in protein therapeutic development, and for those outside this area who are interested in understanding it better. The initial chapters describe the underlying theory, and strengths and weaknesses of the different techniques commonly used during therapeutic development. The majority of the chapters discuss the applications of these techniques, including case studies, across the product lifecycle from early discovery, where the focus is on identifying targets, and screening for potential drug product candidates, through expression and purification, large scale production, formulation development, lot-to-lot comparability studies, and commercial support including investigations.
