Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature’s Diplomats explores the development of science-based and internationally conceived nature protection in its foundational years before the 1960s, the decade when it launched from obscurity onto the global stage. Raf De Bont studies a movement while it was still in the making and its groups were still rather small, revealing the geographies of the early international preservationist groups, their social composition, self-perception, ethos, and predilections, their ideals and strategies, and the natures they sought to preserve. By examining international efforts to protect migratory birds, the threatened European bison, and the mountain gorilla in the interior of the Belgian Congo, Nature’s Diplomats sheds new light on the launch of major international organizations for nature protection in the aftermath of World War II. Additionally, it covers how the rise of ecological science, the advent of the Cold War, and looming decolonization forced a rethinking of approach and rhetoric; and how old ideas and practices lingered on. It provides much-needed historical context for present-day convictions about and approaches to the preservation of species and the conservation of natural resources, the involvement of local communities in conservation projects, the fate of extinct species and vanished habitats, and the management of global nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ghent congress on town planning was the first genuinely international conference to address all aspects of civic life and design. Attended by representatives of 22 governments and 150 cities, as well as by hundreds of architects, planners, politicians, and scientists, it marked the culmination of a series of events which helped to form the world of town planning at the start of the twentieth century. Ghent illustrates three key themes for the history of town planning. First, the transactions of the congress include papers from some of the most significant theorists and practitioners of the period, such as Patrick Abercrombie, Augustin Rey, Raymond Unwin, and Joseph Stübben. Secondly, the congress as a whole reflects just how global the business of town planning had become by 1913: papers and exhibits included studies of colonial projects as well as European designs. The delegates themselves provide wonderful evidence of a transnational process at work. Finally, the text brilliantly illuminates the way in which town planning was critically linked to other reformist movements of the era. The whole event, like the International Union of Cities that it spawned, was the product of the peace movement. Even as war draw nearer, the International Union was being spoken of as a future world government. Significantly, one of the organisers of the event – Henri La Fontaine - won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913. The Premier Congrès international et exposition comparée des villes is a major publication, but it is one that is now almost impossible to obtain. This republication, a century after this seminal event, will be considerable interest not only to those who work on town-planning, but also transnational historians and writers on the peace movement more generally.

Book excerpt: Canadian Writers in 1984 is a special double length, hardback edition of the 100th issue of Canadian Literature. The book not only celebrates a publishing landmark in the history of the journal but also reflects the incredible richness of Canada's contemporary literary scene. The collection features the work of outstanding new writers as well as poems and essays written especially for this issue by Canada's most famous poets, novelists, dramatists, and essayists. Among the 29 essayists are Matt Cohen, Timothy Findley, Naim Kattan, Irving Layton, Dorothy Livesay, Eli Mandel, Jane Rule, Aritha Van Herk, and George Woodcock. The writings exhibit a diversity of styles and themes: Margaret Laurence on war and peace, Eric Nicol on commercial writing, Marian Engel on starting a new novel, James Reaney on regionalism, David Watmough on places, and David Helwig on arguing with God. The poets comprise a virtual "Who's Who" in Canadian poetry today: Margaret Atwood, Bill Bissett, Barry Dempster, Joy Kogawa, Dennis Lee, George McWhirter, Susan Musgrave, Michael Ondaatje, Al Purdy, Robin Skelton, Raymond Souster, and Tom Wayman are among over 60 of the poets represented. Prefaces to the book have been contributed by Governor General Edward Schreyer; Dr. George Pederson, President of the University of British Columbia; and Canada's grand man of letters, Mavor Moore.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five elements - governmental authorities, public discourse, corporate and market interests, citizens' associations and international agencies - may help in figuring out the complex and challenging purpose of the research work presented in this volume which is nothing less than the history of the governance of cultural and natural heritage in eleven countries, from its outset to the present. Speaking about governance is challenging. The term has been vastly used and misused. But today, when the feverish popularity of the concept is probably in decline, we rest with one solid conviction at least: that social, economic, cultural and institutional processes are governed not only through government (be it national or local) with its legislative, administrative and jurisdictional mechanisms, but through a larger array of different actors and factors. These include schools and universities, citizens' associations, public opinion, economic corporations, non-governmental organizations, learned societies, unions, media, international agencies, clubs, consultants etc. In fact, the reader is going to meet quite a few of these actors in this publication; they are the unavoidable characters involved in the story the authors have set out to tell.
