Book Synopsis Ancient Hebrew Dictionary by : Jeff A. Benner
Download or read book Ancient Hebrew Dictionary written by Jeff A. Benner and published by Ancient Hebrew Research Center. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you know Hebrew or not, this book will provide you with a quick reference resource for learning the meaning of many Hebrew words that lie beneath the English translations, which will open new doors for you into Biblical interpretation. The Hebrew language of the Bible must be understood from its original and Ancient Hebrew perspective. Our interpretation of a word like "holy" is an abstract idea, derived out of a Greco-Roman culture and mindset, which is usually understood as someone or something that is especially godly, pious or spiritual. However, the Hebrew word קדוש (qadosh) means, from an Ancient Hebrew perspective, unique and is defined in this dictionary as: "Someone or something that has, or has been given the quality of specialness, and has been separated from the rest for a special purpose." With this interpretation, we discover that the nation of Israel is not "holy," in the sense of godliness or piety, but is a unique and special people, separated from all others to serve God. This Biblical Hebrew dictionary contains the one thousand most frequent verbs and nouns found within the Hebrew Bible. Each word is translated and defined from its original concrete Ancient Hebrew perspective, allowing for a more accurate interpretation of the text. In addition to the one thousand verbs and nouns, the appendices in the book include a complete list of Hebrew pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions and numbers.

Book Synopsis Mortgage Lending, Racial Discrimination, and Federal Policy by : John M. Goering
Download or read book Mortgage Lending, Racial Discrimination, and Federal Policy written by John M. Goering and published by The Urban Insitute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether or not there is discrimination in the mortgage lending market is one of the most extensively debated issues in the civil rights arena. Because many early studies were flawed and the results misinterpreted on both sides of the debate, there is little agreement as to the next essential steps in either research or enforcement. This comprehensive volume seeks to clarify the debate by including rigorous review of fair lending research, applied projects, and enforcement activities to date, as well as recommendations for research needed to resolve unanswered questions. The intent of the authors is to help the housing industry, regulators, advocates, and the research community to better understand the issue of discrimination in an important area of American life -- the right to take out a mortgage to buy a home based on one's credit worthiness, not on one's race or ethnic group.
Book Synopsis Ancient Magic and Ritual Power by : Paul Mirecki
Download or read book Ancient Magic and Ritual Power written by Paul Mirecki and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a series of provocative essays that explore expressions of magic and ritual power in the ancient world. The essays are authored by leading scholars in the fields of Egyptology, ancient Near Eastern studies, the Hebrew Bible, Judaica, classical Greek and Roman studies, early Christianity and patristics, and Coptology. Throughout the book the essays examine the terms employed in descriptions of ancient magic. From this examination comes a clarification of magic as a polemical term of exclusion but also an understanding of the classical Egyptian and early Greek conceptions of magic as a more neutral category of inclusion. This book should prove to be foundational for future scholarly studies of ancient magic and ritual power. This publication has also been published in paperback, please click here for details.
Book Synopsis Police Forces: A Cultural History of an Institution by : Klaus Mladek
Download or read book Police Forces: A Cultural History of an Institution written by Klaus Mladek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-08-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection focuses on the cultural history of the police as an institution from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. Contrary to most studies on the law and the state, Police Forces demonstrates how profoundly modern democracies are enveloped by more informal and less codified modes of social control. In a time when the rule of law appears to be on the retreat, 'police studies' emerges as a field in its own right. This volume helps stake out this new discipline, including the intricate link between police and the law, 'might' and 'right,' state violence, surveillance technologies, politics and resistance. Police Forces considers the question of law and order from below: alleyways, borders, police stations, law offices, bureaucracies, and the minds of administrators, in which the quotidian workings of the law unfold.

Book Synopsis Corporate Governance by : International Finance Corporation
Download or read book Corporate Governance written by International Finance Corporation and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging markets are becoming important engines of global growth. These markets, such as the transition economies in Europe and Central Asia, are viewed with increasing interest by foreign investors as private sector participation grows, as regulatory reforms take effect, and as individual firms focus on elevating their business practices to align with international standards. In fact, foreign direct investment inflows to transition economies increased by 28 percent to reach $108 billion in 2013, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Sound corporate governance is a critical element in helping these emerging markets meets their full economic potential. Good corporate governance, defined as the structures and processes by which companies and banks are directed and controlled, helps firms operate more efficiently, improves access to capital, mitigates risk, and safeguards against mismanagement. Good governance also facilitates appropriate consideration of other critical issues for enterprises, including environmental and social responsibility. It is the foundation for long-term business growth and sustainability, adding value for investors and contributing lasting dividends for economies. Companies and banks, particularly those in emerging markets that are focused on improving their corporate governance can look to a growing body of evidence that such efforts matter, yielding bottom line benefits, reputational enhancements, and competitive differentiation. In one study of note, the Emerging Market Investor Survey, 100 percent of the investors interviewed said they will pay a higher premium for good governance in an emerging market firm than what they would pay for a similar firm in a developed market. As companies and banks in Europe and Central Asia find their place on the world's economic stage, efforts to enhance governance practices are helping them reduce their business risks, improve performance, and set the course for long-term success and profitability.
Book Synopsis Economic Complexity by : William A. Barnett
Download or read book Economic Complexity written by William A. Barnett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-02-09 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last fifteen or twenty years have been marked by fundamental advances in the sources of complex behavior in micro- and macro-economics, in the practical and methodological implications of such behavior, and in the methods and tools appropriate to cope with them. Much of these developments have been driven by the recognition and acceptance by economists of approaches initiated in other fields - such as non-linear dynamics, statistical physics, network theory, biology, computer science, and the use of computational methods as problem-solving tools - giving rise to important and innovative impulses to economic thinking. The sixteen papers in this book -- the fourteenth volume in the series International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics - reflect from various perspectives this recent evolution. They are the outgrow from a selection of communications presented at the COMPLEXITY2000 workshop held in Aix en Provence, France, 4-6 May 2000 - a workshop that brought together, from twenty-two nations, almost seventy economists, mathematicians, biologists and physicists interested in complex phenomena. All papers were strictly refereed in the intended tradition of the series: to provide journal quality collections of research papers of unusual importance in areas of currently highly visible activity within the economics profession. With its selection of articles, the book presents an overview of advanced contributions to complexity in economics and social system, such as chaotic dynamics and multiple equilibria, agent-based models, applications of genetic algorithms, non-equilibrium macro-dynamics, information transmission, learning mechanisms. Although the papers address economic problems, the authorship and the perspectives presented are interdisciplinary and provide therefore a number of innovative insights and solutions to classical or new questions.
