Book excerpt: You're born with a brilliant mind, but it doesn’t come with a user’s guide or an on-off switch. Left to its own devices, it can feel like your worst enemy when its survival-based default program keeps you focused on what is wrong with you and your world. This book is the user’s guide that puts you in charge of how your mind works. With positive psychology and emotional intelligence working for you, you will become the conscious creator you were born to be. Goodfinding activates your brilliant mind with gratitude, appreciation, and optimism for your past, present, and future, deriving value and opportunity from all of your life experiences. William G. DeFoore, Ph.D., a mental health counselor for more than fifty years, shares this roadmap to help you achieve your desired outcomes. The premise of the book is that you have a good heart, and when you use your brilliant mind effectively, it will be in direct service to that inner goodness. Goodfinding will become your manual, guide, and companion as you expand into the best version of the person you choose to be. What you pay attention to grows, and finding the good helps the good find you. What others are saying about Goodfinding: Goodfinding offers several lifetimes of wisdom on each and every page. There are so many engaging ideas and tools for readers to live their most present life, in mind, body, and spirit. The entire book is a well-informed and life-giving workbook, and a therapy book for a doctorate level course in Awakened Living! Carolyn Craft, PsyD. Unity Minister, Pastoral Counselor, Coach, and media executive First the name “Goodfinding” attracted my attention as a clever and warm-hearted summation of William DeFoore’s core philosophy. Then in page after page of life experience, practical wisdom, and useful tools and perspectives, I found my mood brighten along with my faith in humanity. Thank God we have teachers like William to share essential knowledge so critical to humankind in these troubled times. Bruce Cryer, MA, former CEO, HeartMath, adjunct faculty, Stanford University Dr. William DeFoore’s book, Goodfinding, is inspirational. It manages to describe important, complex systems in easily understandable terms. The basic principles outlined in Goodfinding are laid out in very practical vignettes that make them immediately accessible to the person ready to put them in practice. Most impressive is Dr. DeFoore’s ability to put into practice, through his easy manner of relating to the reader, the very principles he describes in the text designed to promote self-confidence, self-acceptance, compassion, and optimism. Larry J. Benoit, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist In Goodfinding, Dr. William DeFoore has made available to all of us a path, a way of using our mind and heart to make a positive contribution to life, starting with our own. It’s so clear: If we are likely to find what we are looking for, why not look for what is ‘good’? And when we truly appreciate people and things, we live up to the original meaning of that word: we see the positive value and quality of what is there. Dr John. J. Scherer, author, Leadership Development Facilitator William DeFoore’s Goodfinding presents a recipe for discovering joy and happiness in your life. And it does so by inviting the reader to directly participate in highly effective, efficacy-based strategies for positive change, presented in a beautifully flowing, profoundly engaging, grounded but succinct, and to-the-point tour of how to find the good in living. How can anyone join Dr. DeFoore on this virtual romp through the land of positivity, of possibilities, of Goodfinding without becoming overcome with the pure exhilaration of being alive? You will enjoy this ride. Larry C. Stevens, Ph.D., Professor of Psychological Sciences, Northern Arizona University To listen to the audiobook version, please click the link: https://amzn.to/3Y88iaz

This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting on the philosophical assumptions that sustain the development debate, Rabbani analyzes how the modern project of development and the antidevelopment discourse reduce the human condition to a struggle for self-preservation and, likewise, social and international cooperation to a strategic and self-defeating process. The book centers on core inconsistencies in the rationale of both discourses as they stand for individual autonomy, collective self-determination and mutual respect. Building these social goals around the requirement of ‘non-interference’ in individual or collective affairs, neither discourse can practically enhance nor coherently sustain respect to people’s freedom and diversity. The author argues that any real alternative to the normative reductions and actual destructions carried on by international development theory and practice would have to recover the non-contingent solidarity implied in people’s search for self-understanding. Awareness of this human condition, in its turn, actively fosters relations of universal inclusion and global friendship. Instructors and graduate and undergraduate students in the fields of peace studies, development studies, political sciences and political philosophy; professionals and volunteers working in governmental and non-governmental organizations and development agencies will find this volume ideally fit for purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicians help people heal, but how well do they take care of their own physical and mental well-being? How does a physician’s personal history, medical training, and medical culture predispose and perpetuate potential health issues, relationship challenges, financial strain, abuse, or burnout in physicians? Does the prevalent mindset of pushing beyond our needs and losing ourselves in the physician identity perpetuate burnout or sustainability? How do emotions such as fear, obligation, guilt, and shame affect medical training, medical practice, physician lives, and their relationships? Saving Lives without Destroying Yours is a self-help book for physicians to set boundaries to improve their mental health and wellbeing, break intergenerational medical training traps, protect themselves, engage more in their life roles, and design a life and medical practice where physicians can thrive, not just survive. This book empowers physicians to know themselves – their needs, wants, abilities, and limitations - while being understanding and non-judgmental towards others’ needs when setting boundaries. Takeaway pearls include building self-awareness, setting boundaries, communicating assertively, identifying patterns of abuse, building healthy relationships, and managing interpersonal conflict using dialectical behavioural therapy principles and emotional intelligence. Dr. Mammoliti and Mr. Ly combine their experience in psychiatry, psychotherapy, coaching, and occupational therapy to encourage a comprehensive self-reflection journey and guide physicians in boundary setting. Discover how to say No appropriately and say Yes to a more meaningful and healthy life.

Book excerpt: Sudan has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. After decades of civil war, rebel uprisings and power struggles, in 2011 it gave birth to the world’s newest country – South Sudan. But it’s not been an easy transition, and the secession that was meant to pave the path to peace, has plunged the region into further chaos. In this updated edition of his ground-breaking investigation, Jok Madut Jok delves deep into Sudan’s culture and history, isolating the factors that continue to cause its fractured national identity. With moving first-hand testimonies, Jok provides a decisive critique of a region in turmoil, and addresses what must be done to break the tragic cycle of racism, poverty and brutality that grips Sudan and South Sudan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial goal of this book was to discover the ultimate purpose and meaning behind the abductions of human beings into UFOs—the alarming reality of which is still hardly known to the public. But as this study developed, it led to a series of revelations which brought us to an unexpected interpretation of this phenomenon. Indeed, it became all too obvious that there was a connection between these abductions and the absurd path that today’s human society is taking. More and more measures are being implemented that are threatening the health, well-being, and freedom of human beings the world over under the guise of ‘security’ purposes. Those responsible for this are not only our leaders, but occult forces--which are exposed in this book. We were therefore led to unveil what we can indeed refer to as the “greatest treachery in human history”: extremely powerful dark forces have been acting on Earth for a very long time unbeknownst to our population. These forces, identified in this book, are directly interfering in the governance of our world and are directly opposed to the harmonious evolution of Humankind, putting us all in grave danger. This book sheds an unprecedented new light on how this all relates to the tragic events Humanity has been going through since 2020.

The Right thinks that there is too much government involvement, and the Left thinks there is not enough. In Changing Politics of Canadian Social Policy James Rice and Michael Prince track the history of the welfare state from its establishment in the 1940s, through its development in the mid 1970s, to the period of deficit crisis and restraint that followed in the late 1970s and 1980s. Taking a historical perspective, the authors grapple with the politics of social policy in the 1990s. Globalization and the concomitant corporate mobility affect government's ability to regulate the distribution of wealth, while the increasing diversity of the population puts increasingly complex demands on an already overstressed system. Yet in the face of these constraints, the system still endures and is far from irrelevant. Some social programs have been dismantled, but the government has organized and maintained others. Greater democratization of welfare programs and social policy agencies could make the system thrive again. Changing Politics provides the much-needed groundwork for students and policy makers while also proposing real solutions for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War phrase “weapons of mass destruction” continues to be used despite significant changes in international political cultures, military concepts of operation, and technology advances. Today, the term “weapons of mass destruction” (WMD) is used to address many things, from grams of ricin and barrels of industrial chemicals to megaton nuclear weapons. As a direct result of the decision to refer to all nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons as well as biological, chemical and radiological (CBR) hazards as “WMD,” we have lost the ability to accurately develop, assess, and discuss policy concerns relating to the contemporary use of unconventional weapons on the battlefield and within the homeland. This book uses a public policy framework to examine how the U.S. government, and in particular the U.S. military, should address the potential use of unconventional weapons in the 21st century. It defines the problem, identifies the policy actors and reviews policy options. It discusses past policy efforts before offering a critical review of current strategies and how WMD issues are integrated into the current military Joint Operating Concepts (deterrence, cooperative security, major combat operations, irregular warfare, stability, and homeland security), and proposes new national framework for countering WMD. The aim is to answer such questions as what does counterproliferation mean and whether the U.S. government is adequately prepared to protect U.S. citizens and its armed forces from adversaries developing unconventional weapons.
