Book excerpt: When STIEVE published his work on male reproductive organs in this handbook in 1930, a definitive treatment of the morphology of the accessory sex glands seemed accomplished. Nevertheless, the increasing bulk of scientific literature published in the last years on this topic has demonstrated that new methods, e. g. , developments in the fields of electron microscopy, cytochemistry and auto radiography, pose new questions. These principally morphological techniques have yielded new insights into the fine structure and functional organization of these glands. The stress, however, lay on biochemical questions concerning the mechanism of hormone action, since the accessory sex glands were considered to be primary target organs of hormone action, i. e. , their cells bind specific hormones. Besides the basic interest of endocrinologists, morphologists, and biochemists, several unanswered questions arose from the practitioners, e. g. , urologists, andrologists, and other clinicians, especially as regards the prostate gland, one of the organs most affected in elderly men. Thus, the epidemiologic investigations of the last years proved this very organ to be one of the most frequent causes of death in elderly men (HANSEN, 1977). The view of the practi tioner established a special field of investigation and effected a shift from morphologic analysis to biochemical or endocrine aspects. Nevertheless, mor phology, if tempered by experimental or concomitant biochemical studies, pro vides a solid base for tracing the pathologic events occurring in these organs.

Book excerpt: Written expressly for the surgical pathologist, the pathology resi-dent and the urologic surgeon, this volume describes the histopathologic appearances of diseases affecting the prostate and the seminal vesicles. The introductory chapter includes a dis-cussion on the role and limitations of immunohistochemistry and fine needle aspiration in the diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma. In the pathologic descriptions the main emphasis is placed on microscopic differential diagnosis. Many conditions are discussed including pro-static calculi, benign nodular hyperplasia, tumors of prostatic urethra, therapy-induced changes, and rare carcinomas. Many dia-grams, charts, tables and 221 photomicrographs complement the text.

Book excerpt: Male urogenital glands (also named male accessory sex glands) have received relatively little attention from electron microscopists, with the possible exception of the prostate gland. Moreover, even though comparative studies have clearly shown that these glands exhibit species-dependent features, very few studies, scattered over various publications, are available on the urogenital glands of man. This volume, the 11th of the series on Electron Microscopy in Biology and Medicine, presents an unprecedented collection of information on the functional microanatomy and cytoarchitecture of these organs in humans. Through the integration of transmission and scanning electron microscopy with a variety of modern techniques, it documents the most important aspects of the histophysiology of these glands from their development to some pathological alterations. In order to cover some key mechanisms of their cell biology, such as the action of sex hormones, the epithelio-mesenchymal interactions, and the dynamic of the secretory process, reports on human organs have been supplemented by some studies on experimental animals. The outstanding level of the contributions and the quality of the illustrations make this book, which has been compiled by some of the world authorities on the topic, a work of reference for students, scientists, and professionals interested in biomedical foundations of andrology, as well as a stimulus for future research in this exciting and relatively neglected chapter of human reproduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tumours of the prostate are the commonest types of neoplasm in the male. Whilst the benign form is virtually a universal condition in the ageing male, malignant tumours rank amongst the top causes of cancer death. Despite the fact that the involvement of the testis in the growth of the prostate has been recognised for almost two centuries, it was not until the early 1940s that Charles Huggins' studies on the effect of orchidectomy and oestrogen therapy on prostatic cancer initiated endocrine manipulation in the management of this malignancy. During the 1960s progress in the understanding of the mechanism of hormone action, achieved through advances in molecular biology and the recognition of certain aspects of hormonal control in relation to the genome, introduced a new dimension for approaching endocrine manipulation of prostatic tumours. By the end of that decade a new scientific discipline devoted to prostate research had been born, which brought together investigators in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, endocrinology, immunology, urology and pathology to search for the cause and to explore methods for advancing the management of abnormal prostatic growth. Since then a wealth of scientific data has accumulated on the prostate in which endocrinology has manifested itself as the cardinal aspect to which most of the findings can be related.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique publication illustrates that the prostate elaborates an array of local hormones or "autocoids" and how these influence prostatic growth, function and oncogenesis. It describes how familiarity with these participants and how they effect the character and direction of prostatic function may suggest diagnostic markers of malfunction and new sites and modes of therapeutic intervention. The catholic scope and authorship of the work seeks to integrate the views of those urologists, reproductive physiologists and endocrinologists who presently work with the prostate. It attempts to show all other biologists the full range of the gland's activities and participating molecules. Included are: oncogenes, mitogens, polyamines, prostaglandins, growth factors, antigens, and the familiar steroid, peptide and protein hormones. This volume is unique in its point of view and in the new concepts it presents. Addressed are actions of spermine-binding protein and osteoblastic mitogens, consequences of inhibin/thyrotropin-releasing hormone balance, and urokinase effects. Covered also are androgen modulation of vasoactive intestinal polypeptides, evidence of a prostatolymphoreticular system, secretion of dihydrotestosterone, and a model of the inter-dependence of prostatic epithelium and stroma. This unique new volume is of great value to those in urology, internal medicine, physiology, endocrinology and pharmacology.

Book excerpt: This book has been designed to help medical students succeed with their histology classes, while using less time on studying the curriculum. The book can both be used on its own or as a supplement to the classical full-curriculum textbooks normally used by the students for their histology classes. Covering the same curriculum as the classical textbooks, from basic tissue histology to the histology of specific organs, this book is formatted and organized in a much simpler and intuitive way. Almost all text is formatted in bullets or put into structured tables. This makes it quick and easy to digest, helping the student get a good overview of the curriculum. It is easy to locate specific information in the text, such as the size of cellular structures etc. Additionally, each chapter includes simplified illustrations of various histological features. The aim of the book is to be used to quickly brush up on the curriculum, e.g. before a class or an exam. Additionally, the book includes guides to distinguish between the different histological tissues and organs that can be presented to students microscopically, e.g. during a histology spot test. This guide lists the specific characteristics of the different histological specimens and also describes how to distinguish a specimen from other similar specimens. For each histological specimen, a simplified drawing and a photomicrograph of the specimen, is presented to help the student recognize the important characteristics in the microscope. Lastly, the book contains multiple “memo boxes” in which parts of the curriculum are presented as easy-to-remember mnemonics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42. Written and edited by highly experienced, board-certified toxicologic pathologists Includes more than 700 high-resolution microscopic images from organs that are typically examined in safety assessment toxicology studies Detailed figure legends and chapter narratives present the salient features of each organ at each time interval Figures are available for further study via Elsevier’s Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification Valuable resource for toxicologic pathologists who are confronted with interpretation of lesions in juvenile rats in situations where age-matched concurrent controls are not available for comparison, e.g., with unscheduled decedents Figures are available for further study on ScienceDirect with Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification

Book excerpt: This book presents a wealth of images of the different diseases and conditions encountered in the field of uroradiology with the aim of enabling the reader to recognize lesions, to interpret them appropriately and to make correct diagnoses. The images have been selected because they depict typical or classic findings and provide a route to lesion recognition that is superior to memorization of descriptions. The imaging modalities represented include CT, CT angiography, CT urography, MRI, MRA, MRU, diffusion-weighted MRI and ADC mapping, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, sonography, conventional angiography, excretory urography, retrograde pyelography, cystography, urethrography and voiding cystourethrography. For each depicted case, important imaging features are highlighted and key points identified in brief accompanying descriptions. Readers will find that the book provides excellent guidance in the selection of imaging modalities and facilitates diagnosis. It will be an ideal ready source of information on key imaging features of urinary tract diseases for medical students, residents, fellows and physicians handling these diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this canonical text on male reproductive medicine will cement the book's market-leading position. Practitioners across many specialties - including urologists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists, medical endocrinologists and many in internal medicine and family practice – will see men with suboptimal fertility and reproductive problems. The book provides an excellent source of timely, well-considered information for those training in this young and rapidly evolving field. While several recent books provide targeted 'cookbooks' for those in a male reproductive laboratory, or quick reference for practising generalists, the modern, comprehensive reference providing both a background for male reproductive medicine as well as clinical practice information based on that foundation has been lacking until now. The book has been extensively revised with a particular focus on modern molecular medicine. Appropriate therapeutic interventions are highlighted throughout.
