Book Synopsis Endangered Compound Prosody in Kansai Japanese by : Andrew Angeles
Download or read book Endangered Compound Prosody in Kansai Japanese written by Andrew Angeles and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the diverse prosody of compound nouns in Kansai Japanese, with a special focus on a class of compounds with particularly variable prosody, whose unique prosody is potentially endangered due to their structure and influence from Tokyo Japanese. These compounds serve as important evidence for recursion in prosodic structure in theories of the syntax-prosody interface, as they simultaneously resemble not only other compound words but also non-compound phrases, making them valuable test cases for compound prosodic structure. This book discusses potential reasons for these compounds' prosodic variabilty and what may condition their unique prosody, based on results from novel fieldwork. A unified account of compound prosody in Kansai and three other Japanese dialects is also presented.
Book Synopsis The Morphology of Dutch by : Geert Booij
Download or read book The Morphology of Dutch written by Geert Booij and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed and comprehensive description of the morphological system of Dutch. Following an introduction to the basic assumptions of morphological theory, separate chapters are devoted to the inflectional system, derivation, and compounding, the interface between morphology and phonology, the interaction between morphology and syntax, and, new to this edition, a more detailed study of the features of separable complex verbs. Geert Booij demonstrates in this book that the morphology of Dutch poses multiple interesting descriptive and theoretical challenges. The volume also contributes to ongoing discussions on the nature and representation of morphological processes, the role of paradigmatic relations between words - and between words and phrases - and the interaction between morphology, phonology, and syntax. This second, fully revised edition has been updated throughout with expanded coverage of Dutch morphological phenomena and results from new research. Alongside a brand new chapter on separable complex verbs, it also includes a more sophisticated analysis of the relation between morphology and syntax, and an introduction to the basic tenets of Construction Morphology.
Book Synopsis The Learnability of Complex Constructions by : Marcel Schlechtweg
Download or read book The Learnability of Complex Constructions written by Marcel Schlechtweg and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How language users from different linguistic backgrounds cope with forms of complexity is still a territory with many unanswered questions. The current book is concerned with morphologically and syntactically complex items, that is, derivatives, inflected forms, compounds, phrases and forms related by agreement and examines how these constructions are acquired and learned in a great range of different languages, such as Turkish, Welsh, Basque and Catalan. Relying on a variety of methodologies targeting production or comprehension, among others, lexical decision and priming experiments, an EEG study, a corpus analysis and a reading test, the authors consider data from native speakers mastering one or more languages and second-language users. Overall, the volume reflects upon and contributes to our understanding of how the pecularities of language and its users affect the learnability of complex forms.
Book Synopsis The Syllable in Optimality Theory by : Caroline Féry
Download or read book The Syllable in Optimality Theory written by Caroline Féry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-27 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The syllable has always been a key concept in generative linguistics: the rules, representations, parameters, or constraints posited in diverse frameworks of theoretical phonology and morphology all make reference to this fundamental unit of prosodic structure. No less central to the field is Optimality Theory, an approach developed within (morpho-)phonology in the early 1990s. This 2003 book combines two themes of central importance to linguists and their mutual relevance in recent research. It provides an overview of the role of the syllable in OT and ways in which problems that relate to the analysis of syllable structure can be solved in OT. The contributions to the book not only show that the syllable sheds light on certain properties of OT itself, they also demonstrate that OT is capable of describing and adequately analyzing many issues that are problematic in other theories. The analyses are based on a wealth of languages.

Book Synopsis Boundaries Crossed, at the Interfaces of Morphosyntax, Phonology, Pragmatics and Semantics by : Huba Bartos
Download or read book Boundaries Crossed, at the Interfaces of Morphosyntax, Phonology, Pragmatics and Semantics written by Huba Bartos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a selection of interface studies in generative linguistics, a valuable “one-stop shopping” opportunity for readers interested in the ways in which the various modules of linguistic analysis intersect and interact. The boundaries between the lexicon and morphophonology, between morphology and syntax, between morphosyntax and meaning, and between morphosyntax and phonology are all being crossed in this volume. Though its focus is on theoretical approaches, experimental studies are also included. The empirical focus of many of the contributions is on Hungarian, and several chapters respond to work published by István Kenesei, to whom the volume is dedicated.
Book Synopsis Approaches to Bootstrapping by : Jürgen Weissenborn
Download or read book Approaches to Bootstrapping written by Jürgen Weissenborn and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of Approaches to Bootstrapping focuses on early word learning and syntactic development with special emphasis on the bootstrapping mechanisms by which the child using properties of the speech input enters the native linguistic system. Topics discussed in the area of lexical acquisition are: cues and mechanisms for isolating words in the input; special features of motherese and their role for early word learning; the determination of first word meanings; memory and related processing capacities in early word learning and understanding; and lexical representation and lexical access in early language production. The papers on syntactic development deal with the acquisition of grammatical prosodic features for learning language specific syntactic regularities.Volume 2 of Approaches to Bootstrapping focuses on the interaction between the development of prosodic and morphosyntactic knowledge as evidenced in the early speech of Dutch, English, German, Portugese, Spanish, Danish, Islandic, and Swedish children shedding new light on the relation between universal and language specific aspects of language acquisition. Another section of this volume deals with new approaches to language acquisition using ERP- techniques. The papers discuss in detail the relation between the development of language skills and changes in neurophysiological aspects of the brain. The potentials of these techniques for the development of new tools for an early diagnosis of children who are at risque for developmental language disorders are also pointed out. The closing section contains a synopsis of interactionist approaches to language acquisition, a discussion of the genetic and experiential origin of primitive linguistic elements in acquisition, and a discussion of structural and developmental aspects of bird song in comparison to human language. The two volumes making up Approaches to Bootstrapping present a state-of-the art interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic overview of recent developments in first language acquisition research.

Book Synopsis A grammar of Choguita Rarámuri: In collaboration with Luz Elena León Ramírez, Sebastián Fuentes Holguín, Bertha Fuentes Loya and other Choguita Rarámuri language experts by : Gabriela Caballero
Download or read book A grammar of Choguita Rarámuri: In collaboration with Luz Elena León Ramírez, Sebastián Fuentes Holguín, Bertha Fuentes Loya and other Choguita Rarámuri language experts written by Gabriela Caballero and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive grammatical description of Choguita Rarámuri, a Uto-Aztecan language spoken in the Sierra Tarahumara, a mountainous range in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua belonging to the Sierra Madre Occidental. A documentary corpus developed between 2003 and 2018 with Choguita Rarámuri language experts informs the analysis and is the source of the examples presented in this grammar. The documentary corpus, which consists of over 200 hours of recordings of elicited data, narratives, conversations, interviews, and other speech genres, is available in two archival collections housed at the Endangered Languages Archive and at UC Berkeley’s Survey of California and Other Indian Languages. Choguita Rarámuri is a highly synthetic, agglutinating language with a complex morphological system. It displays many of the recurrent structural features documented across Uto-Aztecan, including a predominance of suffixation, head-marking, and patterns of noun-incorporation and compounding (Sapir 1921; Whorf 1935; Haugen 2008b). Other features of typological and theoretical interest include a complex word prosodic system, a wide range of morphologically conditioned phonological processes, and patterns of variable affix order and multiple exponence. Choguita Rarámuri is also of great comparative/historical importance: while several analytical works of Uto-Aztecan languages of Northern Mexico have been produced in the last years (Guerrero Valenzuela 2006, García Salido 2014, Reyes Taboada 2014, Morales Moreno 2016, Villalpando Quiñonez 2019, inter alia), many varieties still lack comprehensive linguistic description and documentation.
Book Synopsis Prosodic Structure and French Morphophonology by : Stephen J. Hannahs
Download or read book Prosodic Structure and French Morphophonology written by Stephen J. Hannahs and published by ISSN. This book was released on 1995 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an examination of morphophonology in terms of the interaction between morphological structure and phonological structure. The goals of the study are to propose a coherent way of looking at morphophonology in structural terms while assuming a certain autonomy of the phonological and morphological components. The study assumes the basic lexical/postlexical dichotomy of Lexical Phonology, but refers centrally to prosodic structure of the type proposed by Selkirk (1980) and further developed by, among others, Nespor & Vogel (1986), rather than to level ordering. The specific processes of French morphophonology examined here include certain aspects of prefixation and nasalization, glide information, closed syllable adjustment and penultimate schwa specification, which are reanalysed in structural terms, in contrast to analyses in the literature relying on level ordering. Other aspects of French morphophonology argued in the literature to be rule governed, such as Learned Backing, are reanalysed in terms of stem suppletion. The study thus supports Aronoff & Sridhar (1987), Fabb (1988), Booji (1989) and others in arguing against level ordering, while following the lead of Booji & Lieber (1993), Inkelas (1989) and others in advocating the concurrent existence of both morphological and prosodic structure.
Book Synopsis Recursion and Human Language by : Harry van der Hulst
Download or read book Recursion and Human Language written by Harry van der Hulst and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is an edited collection of original contributions which all deal with the issue of recursion in human language(s). All contributions originate as papers that were presented at a conference on the topic of recursion in human language organized by Dan Everett in March 22, 2007. For the purpose of this collection all articles underwent a double-blind peer-review process. The present chapters were written in the course of 2008. Although the ‘recursive’ nature of linguistic expressions, i.e. the apparent possibility of producing an infinite number of expressions with finite means, has been noted for a long time, no general agreement seems to exist concerning the empirical status as well as mathematical formalization of this ‘characteristic’ of human languages or of the grammars that lie behind these utterances that make up these languages. Renewed interest in this subject was sparked by recent claims that ‘recursion’ is perhaps the sole uniquely human and as such universal trait of human language (cf. Chomsky, Hauser and Fitch 2000). In this volume, the issue of recursion is tackled from a variety of angles. Some articles cover formal issues regarding the proper characterization or definition of recursion, while others focus on empirical issues by examining the kinds of structure in languages that suggest recursive mechanism in the grammar. Most articles discuss syntactic phenomena, but several involve morphology, the lexicon and phonology. In addition, we find discussions that involve evolutionary notions and language disorders, and the broader cognitive context of recursion.

Book Synopsis Intonational Phonology by : D. Robert Ladd
Download or read book Intonational Phonology written by D. Robert Ladd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intonation is a subject of increasing importance in fields from syntax to speech recognition. D. Robert Ladd provides an exceptionally clear presentation of the key ideas of the influential autosegmental-metrical theory of intonational phonology associated with the work of Janet Pierrehumbert. He outlines the evidence for the theory's basic tenets and relates them to the ideas of competing approaches in a way that will allow sceptics to reach an informed opinion and he presents a wealth of new material on the cross-language comparison of intonation couched in autosegmental-metrical terms. He also draws attention to problems in Pierrehumbert's version of the autosegmental-metrical theory, and offers some theoretical proposals of his own. This book will appeal to phonologists and phoneticians as an original contribution to the debates it discusses, and will be welcomed by a wide range of students and researchers as an ideal overview of recent work.
