Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works in Prose and Verse of Charles and Mary Lamb, Vol. 2: Tales for Children; Poetry for Children; Poems; Dramatic Works The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study Of Shakespear, for which purpose, his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, dili gent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore words introduced into our language Since his time have been as far as possible avoided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Prose The unexpectedly favorable reception of the poetical compilation entitled "Child Life" has induced its publishers to call for the preparation of a companion volume of prose stories and sketches, gathered, like the former, from the literature of widely separated nationalities and periods. Illness, preoccupation, and the inertia of unelastic years would have deterred me from the undertaking, but for the assistance which I have had from the lady whose services are acknowledged in the preface to "Child Life." I beg my young readers, therefore, to understand that I claim little credit for my share in the work, since whatever merit it may have is largely due to her taste and judgment. It may be well to admit, in the outset, that the book is as much for child-lovers, who have not outgrown their child-heartedness in becoming mere men and women, as for children themselves; that it is as much about childhood, as for it. If not the wisest, it appears to me that the happiest people in the world are those who still retain something of the child's creative faculty of imagination, which makes atmosphere and color, sun and shadow, and boundless horizons, out of what seems to prosaic wisdom most inadequate material, - a tuft of grass, a mossy rock, the rain-pools of a passing shower, a glimpse of sky and cloud, a waft of west-wind, a bird's flutter and song. For the child is always something of a poet; if he cannot analyze, like Wordsworth and Tennyson, the emotions which expand his being, even as the fulness of life bursts open the petals of a flower, he finds with them all Nature plastic to his eye and hand. The soul of genius and the heart of childhood are one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Deeds: Prose for Children's Reading and Speaking It has, of course, been impossible, except in a very few instances, to give these orations, addresses, and essays entire. All that could be included here was the central thought, the most noteworthy sentences, the portion best worth remembering and repeating. A word of caution should, perhaps, be added. While many of the selections relating to great Americans are careful and well-balanced judgments, many others are frankly eulogies. Impartial estimate can scarcely be looked for m a funeral oration, and often, on such occasion, a man is set on a higher ped estal than history will award him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded Poetry Readers: Fourth Year Poetry is the chosen language of childhood and youth. The baby repeats words again and again for the mere joy of their sound: the melody of nursery rhymes gives a delight Which is quite independent of the meaning of the words. Not until youth ap proaches maturity is there an equal pleasure in the rounded periods of elegant prose. It is in childhood therefore that the young mind should be stored with poems Whose rhythm Will be a present delight and Whose beautiful thoughts will not lose their charm in later years. The selections for the lowest grades are addressed primarily to the feeling for verbal beauty, the recog nition of Which in the mind of the child is funda mental to the plan of this work. The editors have felt that the inclusion of critical notes in these little books intended for elementary school children would be not only superfluous, but, in the degree in Which critical comment drew the child's attention from the text, subversive of the desired result. N or are there any notes on methods. The best way to teach chil dren to love a poem is to read it inspiringly to them. The French say The ear is the pathway to the heart. A poem should be so read that it Will sing itself in the hearts of the listening children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birth and Adoption: A Book of Prose and Poetry In presenting this book Of poems to the public I do not pretend to be a Goldsmith, a Davis or a Moore. I have done the best I could, and, under the circumstances, I hope the kind reader will appreciate my work all the more. I have written some Of these poems in the dead hours Of the night, Often when my thoughts wandered far across the sea to the little church and the schoolhouse and vines, meadowland and wood, where I first saw the light Of day. More Of them were written on the broad Atlantic, nearing the land Of my birth and some were written when return ing to the land Of my adoption. The language used in this book may not sound parliamentary, but to me it Sounds very expressive, and therefore I Offer no apology. When a boy Of seventeen I was forced to leave Ireland (not through any row with the family coachman, but owing to the despotic and tyrannical English laws), and I came to America to seek freedom under the glorious and starry banner of the greatest nation on the globe. For thirty years or more I have been a citizen of this nation. Eight children were born to me here, and the saddest blow I ever received was when their mother, one of the best and noblest women that ever lived, passed away from them and me on the eighth day Of January, 1899. She is now sleeping her last sleep in Calvary Cemetery, New York. May peace be hers. She was my joy and pride, and life without her has been a sad one to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems for Children, Vol. 1 The greatest task which confronts the little child is the mastering of the mother tongue in its three phases speech, reading, and writing. In the accomplishment of this task, nothing is so helpful as the hearing and reading of large quan tities of suitable poetry. This fact was well known to the people of antiquity. Before the age of writing, the laws and traditions of each tribe were handed down through the medium of verse. Verse was chosen rather than prose, because its form facilitated memorizing and furnished a guarantee of accuracy. When the law or tradition had been once' thrown into the poetic form it was difficult to change its meaning without destroying its form and this would at once furnish a test of correctness. It was in this manner that all the nations of antiquity trained the minds of their young and transmitted to posterity the memory of the deeds done by their heroes, and those laws and rules of conduct which experience had found it necessary to impart to the youthful members of the community. Thus it was that the Greeks preserved to posterity the poems of Homer and the laws of their legislators. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
