Great Lakes icebreaker are presented and compared to available full-scale data. In spite of the difficulties in exactly modeling full-scale conditions, the predictions based on the model test results of the ship performance compared reasonably well to those measured during full-scale trials. Several possible sources of errors are identified. In particular, duplication at the model scale of the ship hull's ice friction coefficient is considered to be critical in determining the ice resistance and the corresponding propulsion characteristics, namely propeller speed, thrust and torque. Keywords: Coast Guard ships; Ship models; Icebreakers; and Model tests.

Book excerpt: The results of resistance tests in level ice and broken ice channels are presented for two models of the WTGB 140-ft icebreaker at scales of 1:10 and 1:24, respectively. No scale effect on the resistance in level ice could be detected between the two models. From the test results an empirical predictor equation for the full scale ice resistance is derived. Predicted resistance is compared against, and found to be 25 to 40% larger than, available full-scale values estimated from thrust measurements during full-scale trials of the Great Lakes icebreaker Katmai Bay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests in level ice on an idealized icebreaker bow in the shape of a simple wedge were conducted in the test basin. The horizontal and vertical forces on the wedge were measured, and floe size distribution in the wake of the wedge was observed. From the force measurements, the ice wedge/hull friction factor was calculated and found to be in general agreement with the friction factor measured in separate friction tests. The ice floe length and ice floe area measured in the current study were found to follow log-normal probability distributions defined by the length average L and area average A and corresponding standard deviations S sub L and S sub A. The results of these tests and other tests conducted at another facility showed that the ratios A/h squared and L/h (A = average floe area, L = average floe length, h = ice thickness) were, for the same type of model ice, directly proportional to the parameter sigma/gamma h (sigma = ice bending strength, gamma = specific weight of water) and sigma/gamma h, respectively, and independent of the velocity and ice strain modulus or ice characteristic length. However, the coefficients of proportionality appear to depend upon the type of model ice used in the tests. The ratios S-sub-L/A were independent of sigma/gamma h but varied with the bow shape and the type of ice. The available field data are not sufficient for meaningful comparison with the laboratory results. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the particular full-scale conditions modelled in the tests, the dimensionless level ice resistance obtained with the two models of the 140-foot WTGB was essentially independent of the model scale. The fact that no scale effects were identified in the present tests can be interpreted in two ways: one is that icebreakers of size and operating conditions in ice similar to those of the WTGB can be confidently model tested at a scale of at least 1:24. The second interpretation is that model tests of icebreakers may be conducted in model ice 2 cm thick or thicker and/or with a bending strength of 30 kPa or more, since these values were the test conditions for the smaller WTGB model; these tests conditions would then specify a limiting model scale so that they correspond to the desired operating conditions of an icebreaker under design. By conducting model tests not only in level ice but also through broken ice channels, it was possible to separate the level ice resistance into two main components. According to this analysis, it was shown that the ice-breaking component is primarily a function of the Cauchy number but also the Froude number, especially at speed low enough for the ship to experience significant pitching and heaving motions when riding on the level ice and falling back as the ice sheet fails.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the tests on the new U.S. Coast Guard 140-ft icebreaker Katmai Bay (WTGB-101) in the level plate ice and brash ice in Whitefish Bay and the St. Marys River. The results indicate that the vessel can penetrate 22 in. of level freshwater ice with 2-3 in. of snow cover. It can also penetrate up to 48 in. of brash ice in a continuous mode and at least 30 in. of plate ice by backing and ramming. The installed bubbler system decreased the required power of the vessel from 10 to 30% in brash ice and 25 to 35% in level ice. The low friction coating appears to be effective in decreasing the friction factor when it remains intact; when it peels off it appears to make conditions worse than plain paint. An average dynamic friction factor of 0.15 could be used over the entire hull for these tests. (Author).
