Book excerpt: La tesis se desarrolló en una empresa líder en Ecuador en la fabricación de productos plásticos para conducción y almacenamiento de fluidos, especialmente el agua para uso doméstico, situada en la ciudad de Durán y forma parte de un grupo internacional de empresas químicas y petroquímicas con más de 50 empresas a nivel mundial. Este estudio se enfoca dentro del área de rotomoldeo, específicamente en el proceso de fabricación de tanques de polietileno lineal para almacenamiento de agua. La planta se divide en dos áreas: el área de mezclas y el área de hornos, donde se han descubierto inconvenientes que afectan la productividad y rendimiento. Entre las principales causas detectadas se encuentran los paros no programados de los equipos y maquinarias ocasionados por la falta de un programa de mantenimiento preventivo, además la existencia de desperdicios, desorden y contaminación del material. El objetivo principal de este estudio es plantear mejoras para disminuir el desperdicio y aumentar la productividad en el proceso de fabricación de tanques rotomoldeados mediante la utilización de los principios y técnicas de producción esbelta. Con la aplicación de la metodología de producción esbelta se realiza la identificación de los principales problemas existentes en el proceso productivo mediante una entrevista con el supervisor del área y se toman las respuestas con mayor relevancia. Luego de identificar algunos problemas en el proceso se realizan entrevistas a cinco operadores mediante cuestionarios con preguntas relacionadas con problemas de cultura, proceso y tecnología. Con la información obtenida de las entrevistas se procede a identificar los desperdicios del proceso y clasificarlos en desperdicios de alta prioridad y de baja prioridad. Al identificar los desperdicios críticos se procede a plantear mejoras para disminuirlos o eliminarlos.
