Book Synopsis Disaster Risk Management in Asia and the Pacific by : Ian Davis
Download or read book Disaster Risk Management in Asia and the Pacific written by Ian Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses two international frameworks—the Millennium Development Goals and the Hyogo Framework for Action, a program focused on disaster risk management—to study the key trends in the region in terms of disaster incidence, sources of vulnerability and social and economic challenges. As both frameworks draw to a close, international debate is taking place during the period 2012–2015 on their current progress. This book seeks to help readers understand the process better. The chapters are written by eight independent internationally based authors. Collectively, they have extensive regional experience in the areas of disaster risk management and climate change as well as working in academia, research, consultancy, the UN and international agencies, government and the NGO sector. The analysis presented benefits from their varied backgrounds in medicine, architecture, economics, engineering, planning, social studies, development studies and political science. Throughout the book, relevant examples, drawn from the region, are included to ‘earth’ the project in the harsh realities of risk and disaster impact.

Book Synopsis Connecting Asia by : Michael G. Plummer
Download or read book Connecting Asia written by Michael G. Plummer and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how closer regional connectivity and economic integration between South Asia and Southeast Asia can benefit both regions. With a focus on the role played by infrastructure and public policies in facilitating this process, it provides a detailed and up-to-date discussion of issues, innovations, and progress. Country studies of national connectivity issues and policies cover Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, examining major developments in trade and investment, economic cooperation, the role of economic corridors, and regional cooperation initiatives. Thematic chapters explore investment in land and sea transport infrastructure, trade facilitation, infrastructure investment financing, supporting national and regional policies, and model-based estimates of the benefits of integration. They also identify significant opportunities for strengthening these integration efforts as a result of the recent opening up of Myanmar in political, economic, and financial terms. For the first time for these regions, the book employs a state-of-the-art computable general equilibrium (CGE) model incorporating heterogeneous firms to estimate the advantages of integration. Providing perspective on the latest thinking on integration policy, Connecting Asiais an essential resource for academics, policymakers, and business people alike. Contributors: A. Bayley, T. Download or read book Moving Forward Post-tsunami written by United Nations. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and published by UN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the tsunami which hit eight Asian countries in December 2004, a project was initiated to increase understanding of how this natural disaster had affected people who were particularly vulnerable due to social marginalisation, disability status, age and gender. This publication draws on a number of the studies which were commissioned in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand and the national workshops organised in those countries. It seeks to give an overview of the efforts that have been made to mitigate the suffering of those affected, as well as to assess progress towards assisting communities to restore livelihoods and move towards a sustainable long-term recovery.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia written by Asian Development Bank and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a review of the economics of climate change in the Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. It confirms that the region is highly vulnerable to climate change and demonstrates that a wide range of adaptation measures are already being applied. The report also shows that the region has a great potential to contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction, and that the costs to the region and globally of taking no early action against climate change could be very high. The basic policy message is that efforts must be made to apply all feasible and economically viable adaptation and mitigation measures as key elements of a sustainable development strategy for Southeast Asia. It also argues that the current global economic crisis offers Southeast Asia an opportunity to start a transition towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy by introducing green stimulus programs that can simultaneously shore up economies, create jobs, reduce poverty, lower carbon emissions, and prepare for the worst effects of climate change.
